Legislative Updates, Council Efficiency, Spring Break
March 31st, 2026
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Council is now on a short break but I want to start with updating you on some legislation that we have recently passed:
- We have increased the penalties on illegal drop-off bins. In conjunction with the Administration we have impounded many of these and District 19 is looking much better already.
- We passed the resolution to accept the contract to clean King Louis. I am now working in a bipartisan way to find a wonderful place to publicly display him.
- We unanimously passed a resolution to work with JCPS and LG+E to align lighting across all of our bus stops across the city. There is no reason that students can’t have a bus stop that is properly lit for safety and security reasons.
A colleague of mine has proposed a resolution recently to encourage the general assembly to change state law regarding firearm regulation. It is common that Metro Council members speak to state legislators about our priorities related to state law but I can confirm that in the history of Council, these resolutions have never resulted in action and I have no proof that state legislators have ever read one of them. We use resolutions for Metro issues and that makes sense as we have control over those issues. When resolutions pertain to state, federal, or international issues, they just eat up precious time at Council without any impact.
