April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and this year’s message is clear: Put the Phone Away or Pay.
Distracted driving remains one of the most preventable dangers on our roadways. In 2023 alone, 3,275 lives were lost nationwide due to distraction-related crashes. Even a quick glance at your phone can take your eyes, hands, and attention off the road long enough to cause serious consequences.
In Louisville, this message is especially important as our Public Works crews work in and around traffic every day. Staying focused behind the wheel helps protect not only yourself, but also the people working to maintain and improve our streets.
We encourage everyone to take simple steps to drive distraction-free:
- Put your phone away before you start driving.
- If you must text or respond, pull over to a safe location and park first.
- Remember that distracted driving includes texting, social media, and any activity that takes your attention off the road.
- Use “Do Not Disturb,” silence notifications, or place your phone out of reach.
- Ask a passenger to be the “designated texter” if needed.
- Stay alert in work zones and around crews working near roadways.
- Speak up if you see unsafe behavior.
Distracted driving isn’t just about awareness — it’s about accountability. Choosing to stay focused can prevent crashes, protect lives, and keep our roads safer for everyone.

A transportation planning study now underway in Jefferson County will evaluate potential improvements to the Interstate 65/Interstate 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) interchange.
This study includes a full analysis of existing conditions and will evaluate improvement concepts to address congestion, improve traffic flow and enhance the safety of the interchange. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to share their feedback, as well as review existing traffic, safety, and environmental information related to the planning study.
The public meeting will be an open-house event with no formal presentation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Central Regional Library at 7300 Jefferson Boulevard, Louisville, KY 40219. While the meeting is hosted at the library, the meeting is not sponsored or endorsed by the Louisville Free Public Library.

A second public meeting is expected to be held in the Summer of 2026, and the final report is expected to be published by the end of 2026.

Louisville Metro Public Works is hosting its next Pop-Up Drop-Off event April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UofL Shelby Campus, 440 N. Whittington Parkway. These events provide Jefferson County residents with a convenient, free way to recycle items and dispose of large household materials.
Residents can drop off a variety of items, including large household items, up to three electronic devices, scrap metal, bundled yard waste, up to four tires, and household recyclables. Additional services include prescription medication collection by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, on-site document shredding by a vendor, and gently used shoe donations to WaterStep.
New this year, residents can also bring gently used textiles and household items, which will be donated to Goodwill Kentucky.
Pop-Up Drop-Off events are designed to make it easier for residents to responsibly manage waste, reduce landfill use, and keep neighborhoods clean. The program is made possible through a partnership between Louisville Metro Public Works and the Louisville/Jefferson County Waste Management District.
Residents are encouraged to review accepted and non-accepted items before attending and take advantage of this free service.

As warmer weather arrives, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) urges residents to protect themselves from tickborne illnesses—and to help improve local surveillance by submitting ticks they find.
“Ticks are common in wooded, brushy and grassy areas, and even in backyards,” said Connie Mendel, director of LMPHW and chief health strategist. “In Kentucky, the most frequently reported tickborne diseases are Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) and ehrlichiosis. While most tick bites don’t lead to illness, these infections can cause serious health problems.”

T — Take precautions: Use insect repellent and wear protective clothing.

I — Inspect: Check your body (and pets) for ticks after being outdoors.

C - Carefully remove: Use tweezers to remove the tick close to the skin and clean the area.

K — Keep watch: Monitor for fever, aches, or rashes, and seek medical care if symptoms appear.
“While the majority of tick bites do not result in infections, prevention should be taken seriously because tickborne diseases can lead to some pretty significant health complications,” Mendel said. “We want people to live active lifestyles and enjoy the great outdoors, but we want them to do so safely and be tick aware.”
Help us track ticks: Spot a Tick and Share
Since 2022, more than 500 ticks have been identified and tested through LMPHW’s Spot a Tick and Share Program. To date, Lone Star ticks make up 77% of submissions, followed by American Dog ticks at 18%. A few ticks have tested positive for disease over the past 4 years, but more samples are needed for a clearer picture.
How to submit a tick
- Place the tick in an airtight container (not a plastic bag).
- Cover it with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer.
- Label the container with your name and contact information.
- Attach the submission form (available on louisvilleky.gov) to the container.
- Deliver to LMPHW, 400 E. Gray St., Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Join the City of Clifton, Operation Brightside, and District 9 Councilman Andrew Owen’s office for a community cleanup on Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the New Main parking area and help remove leaves and debris from the parking lot, as well as clear vines and invasive growth from the Varanese area near the railroad tracks.
Participants are asked to bring their own gloves and tools, such as rakes, shovels, brooms, leaf blowers, pruners, loppers, chain saws, or pole saws, if available.

Mayor Greenberg & the Louisville Zoo host Party for the Planet powered by LG&E and KU Foundation
Louisville, KY (March 25, 2026) – Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and The Louisville Zoo announce the return of Party for the Planet: A Monthlong Celebration of the Earth powered by LG&E and KU Foundation.
Throughout April, the Zoo will host a series of weekend activities and discounted admission opportunities to celebrate the wonder of our planet and promote the need to protect it. The month culminates on April 26 with the Zoo’s Earth Day Celebration, which features five dollars off general Zoo admission and free parking all day, courtesy of the LG&E and KU Foundation. Community eco-partners will be featured throughout the Zoo from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., providing guests with valuable information on environmental conservation.
“At the Louisville Zoo, we’re passionate about protecting the planet and the amazing animals that call it home,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “When we care for wildlife and the world we share, everyone benefits. Team Kentucky is launching the second Safe Teen Driving Challenge — a program designed to encourage safer driving habits while giving young drivers the chance to earn cash prizes.
The need is real. In just the past three years, Kentucky has experienced more than 49,000 crashes involving teen drivers, leading to over 13,000 injuries and nearly 200 lives lost. Programs like this aim to change that by helping teens build better habits behind the wheel early on.
Open to drivers ages 15 to 19 with a valid permit or license, the challenge uses the DriveWell Go app to track driving behaviors such as speed, braking, and phone use. Teens can monitor their progress, see how they rank, and learn how small changes can make a big difference in staying safe on the road.
Participants will also have the opportunity to win one of five cash prizes totaling $10,000, with the top prize set at $3,000.
Registration is open through April 16, with driving performance tracked from April 17 through July 17. Winners will be announced in August, and their schools will also be recognized.
Beyond the prizes, the real goal is building awareness and encouraging responsible driving habits that last a lifetime — helping protect not only young drivers, but everyone who shares the road.

Louisville, KY. – Whitehall is pleased to announce its next Whitehall Workshop program. On Thursday, April 16, Carolyn Minutillo of Lavender Hill Florals will lead an Open Terrarium workshop. Students will create their own miniature eco-system and learn how to add some ‘living décor’ to their homes. Terraria are generally self-sustaining and need very little care; students only need to bring a creative mind and a desire for a dash of green to their living space. Space is limited and reservations are required. The cost is $75 per person and includes all necessary materials. Danica Novgorodoff is an artist, writer, and New York Times best-selling illustrator. Her books include the graphic novel Long Way Down, written by Jason Reynolds; the cookbook The Simple Art of Rice; and the picture book Alexander von Humboldt: Explorer, Naturalist, and Environmental Pioneer. In 2022, Danica was awarded the Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal, the UK’s most prestigious award for children’s book illustration. She is on the board of the Cofan Survival Fund, working to protect a million acres of Amazon rainforest through Indigenous stewardship in Ecuador, was on the steering committee of the Save Bernheim Now group, and was a co-leader of 350 Brooklyn's Stop the Money Pipeline action group. Her new graphic novel, A Better World is Possible: Global Youth Confront the Climate Crisis, was co-created with climate journalist Meera Subramanian.

Thank you for making our recent Music for a Purpose concert series supporting the Louisville Urban League such a success!
Our weekend began with a private event on Friday featuring a program of all Black composers, followed by live concerts on Saturday and Sunday featuring the fantastic Kevin Harris Project. Chris Lee and Hassan Sabree joined in for an unforgettable experience!! For those who couldn't join us, we have put together a highlight reel HERE.
We are proud to share that we raised $5,500 for the Louisville Urban League. We are still accepting contributions at this link for those who would like to support their mission of fostering economic equity through housing, education, and job security. For the 11th year in a row, KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living, and the Louisville Metro Office for Aging and Disabled Citizens are teaming up to provide fans for older adults and persons with disabilities to help offer relief from the sweltering summer heat. Working with community organizations, churches, businesses, private citizens and the local media, we hope to generate monetary donations to purchase new fans. Persons or businesses interested in sponsoring fans will be able to make tangible or monetary donations to this effort until May 22nd, 2026

Kentucky Shakespeare, the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth, presents the annual FREE Shakespeare in the Parks tour of THE TEMPEST, touring to a record 46 parks this spring.
“O brave new world, that has such people in’t!”
Shakespeare’s final play is a testament to the redeeming power of love and forgiveness – featuring fools, spirits, monsters, shipwrecks, and magical spells. This one-act magical comedy is performed with five actors in neighborhood parks across the region this spring.
- These are FREE, Family-friendly performances for the community and do not require reservations or tickets.
- The show is approximately 80 minutes long without an intermission.
- Please bring your own chairs, blankets, or other sitables that are most comfortable for you, for most venues.
- In case of inclement weather, most locations have alternate in-door spaces, still currently being determined below. All location changes will be shared on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
- Our artists utilize a sound system with speakers.
- If there are physical accessibility questions related to a specific location, please contact us for recommendations.
- At every performance, we have sensory tools and noise-cancelling headphones for both adults and youth available for use.

The Dot Experience recently hosted a group of journalists from across Germany in partnership with Louisville Tourism. During their visit, they learned about The Dot Experience, toured the construction site, and previewed where exhibits will come to life when the museum opens in October. The group also took part in an immersive factory tour, discovering the fascinating process behind the creation of braille books.

Louisville Water Crescent Hill Construction Activity
Louisville Water has three major projects and active construction zones underway on our Louisville Water has three large projects and active construction zones underway on our Crescent Hill Treatment Plant property. For safety purposes, we need to close the public's access to the green space across from the reservoir. Reservoir Avenue sidewalks between Frankfort Avenue and Mary T. Aquatic Center are closed to pedestrians.
The projects also involve closures of the Reservoir, Reservoir Avenue, and sidewalks. To ensure your safety, please respect all fencing and signage. Following is a summary of each project. Reservoir Relining Project
Our project to reline the reservoir is progressing. The walkway around the reservoir is closed. For construction safety and to accomodate guests to the Marty T. Meagher Aquatic Center, we're using two traffic patterns.
- Monday - Friday: Reservoir Avenue remains closed on weekdays between Frankfort Avenue and the Aquatic Center. Please use Brownsboro Road to access the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center. There is no parking on Reservoir Avenue between Frankfort Avenue and the Aquatic Center. We will tow vehicles that ignore the no-parking ban. The sidewalks in this area of Reservoir Avenue are also closed.
- Reservoir Avenue fully opens to traffic at the close of business every Friday through Monday morning. This opening accommodates weekend activity at the Aquatic Center. The no-parking ban is not in effect but the sidewalks remain closed.
Residual Line Project at Crescent Hill
Louisville Water is building a new residual line to remove treatment residuals from the plant. This line will connect with the newly added residual line we installed along Zorn Avenue and River Road. Currently, our contractor is working on our property that is adjacent to the fountain on Frankfort Avenue.
In the coming weeks, we will bore under Frankfort Avenue. This work will not impact Frankfort Avenue traffic. After boring under the road, the line will run behind our basins parallel to Pennsylvania Avenue. We are currently installing temporary fencing in this area. This will restrict access to the green space from Pennsylvania and portions of Reservoir Avenues. The project is expected to last approximately 12 months. When completed, we will remove the temporary fencing and restore the area.
Crescent Hill PAC System
Louisville Water has started construction activity at the Crescent Hill Treatment plant adjacent to the railroad tracks between Pennsylvania and Reservoir Avenues. The work involves upgrading the existing powder activated carbon (PAC) system and construction of silos for additional PAC storage. PAC is critical to our treatment process, and this upgrade will allow us to improve water quality and continue to meet new drinking water standards. Construction is expected to last approximately 18 months.
To safely access the site, it is necessary to build a temporary access road between Pennsylvania Avenue and the construction site. Residents should expect normal construction activity and noise during the project. It will also be necessary to close the sidewalk between Pennsylvania and Reservoir Avenues. Following the project's completion, we will remove the access road and restore the sidewalk.

The Louisville Water Company is applying for an encroachment permit (PW-REP-26-00986) for Pope Street between Brownsboro Road and Embry Street.
Lead Replacement Project

End Date: 5/1/2026

After investigating the sewer and stormwater drainage lines on N. Galt Avenue, MSD has found several blockages that will be fixed through point repairs and pipe rehabilitation. The work is underway and is expected to be complete by the end of summer.
An MSD contractor has already made two point repairs south of 109 N Galt Ave and will continue to move north along the street until all the repairs have been complete. A manhole will also be installed in mid-April at 109 N Galt Ave.
Traffic will go down to one lane near the work. Street parking may be reduced near the work.
After the point repairs are complete, Robinson Pipe Cleaning will line the storm and sanitary sewers with Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP), which is a quick and trench-less process that will add 50 to 100 years to the lifespan of the pipes. Before the contractor leaves, restorative ground and asphalt work will be done.
