The recent severe weather serves as a reminder for residents to prepare for the risks associated with spring storms, such as tornadoes, flooding, lightning, and strong winds.
Each year, thunderstorms generate 20 to 25 million lightning strikes, resulting in an average of over 20 fatalities and numerous injuries, which can be severe and lasting. While no outdoor location remains completely safe during a thunderstorm, you can reduce your risk by evaluating the potential for lightning early and taking suitable precautions. The most effective strategy is to stay indoors during a lightning storm.
Here are some outdoor safety tips that can help you avoid being struck.
Listen to the forecast
It is crucial to listen to weather information when you are at the beach or boating. Short-term forecasts are quite accurate, but sometimes miss some very localized storms.
Watch and listen for distant storm activity
Watch for distant lightning and listen for distant thunder. You might hear thunder before you see lightning on a bright day.
If you hear thunder or see lightning, seek shelter away from the water.
When thunder roars, go indoors.
Remember the phrase, "When thunder roars, go indoors."
Find a safe, enclosed shelter when you hear thunder. Even if you see blue sky, you could still be in danger.
Don't resume outdoor activities for at least 30 minutes after the storm. The beginning and the end of a storm are the most dangerous times.
Avoid open spaces, vehicles, or structures
Stay away from open spaces such as golf courses, parks, playgrounds, ponds, lakes, and swimming pools.
Avoid open vehicles such as convertibles, motorcycles, and golf carts.
Avoid open structures such as porches, gazebos, baseball dugouts, and sports arenas. These structures won’t protect you from lightning.
Don't leave your pet outdoors
Do not leave your pet outdoors or chained to a tree during a lightning storm. Doghouses are not safe shelters; bring your pet inside.

Louisville has over 71,000 acres of land, with approximately 20.5 million pounds of air pollution produced each year, operating gas-powered equipment. This includes some volatile organic compounds and 34,500 pounds of nitrous oxides. These are both principal contributors to the formation of ground level ozone, one of Louisville’s most pervasive air pollutants.
The use of electric-powered lawn equipment reduces these emissions and improves local air quality. The equipment is beneficial for those operating it and anyone in close proximity, as they are not directly inhaling pollution created by gas-powered equipment.
If you have questions, or need assistance, please email us through this form, or call us at (502)574-6000.
Be the change. Be the solution. Be a clean air hero.
Transportation crews are working daily — and often overnight — to locate and repair potholes across Louisville Metro as quickly as possible.
Residents can also help crews respond faster by reporting potholes when they see them. Reports help identify problem areas and allow crews to prioritize repairs.
Prompt reporting helps Louisville Metro respond quickly and maintain safer, smoother streets for everyone.
