Navigating the I-65 Closure: Sign Up to Stay Informed!

The I-65 Central Corridor Project is a major Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) initiative to replace aging interstate bridges and rehabilitate pavement between I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in downtown Louisville. Several bridges in this heavily traveled corridor are more than 60 years old and in poor condition, serving key destinations like UPS, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, the Fair & Exposition Center, UofL, and the medical district.

To complete critical bridge replacements, a section of I-65 will be closed in June and July 2026, with interstate traffic detoured. I-65 is expected to reopen with reduced capacity by August 1, 2026.

Residents, commuters, and businesses are strongly encouraged to stay informed. Sign up for email and text alerts and view detour maps at: https://i65centralcorridor.com/

Community Invited to Help Shape Barret Avenue Improvements at March 24 Open House

Community Invited to Help Shape Barret Avenue Improvements at March 24 Open House

Louisville Metro’s Department of Transportation will host an open house next week to gather community input on design alternatives for the upcoming repaving and restriping of Barret Avenue, from Rufer Avenue to East Broadway.

The open house will take place on Tuesday, March 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Highlands Community Ministries gymnasium, located at 1228 E. Breckinridge St. Residents are invited to stop by at any time during the event to review proposed design options, share feedback, and vote on their preferred approach for the corridor.

This meeting builds on a previous community discussion held in December 2023, where residents shared their experiences of Barret Avenue and offered ideas for improvements. That input has helped inform the design concepts that will be presented at the open house.

Barret Avenue is scheduled to be repaved later this year, making this an important opportunity for community members to help shape how the street will look and function moving forward. Project team members will be available throughout the event to answer questions and gather feedback.

Whitehall to Host Tree Program

Whitehall to Host Tree Program

Whitehall is pleased to announce that it will host a program entitled “Restoring Louisville’s Tree Canopy,” presented by Landscape Director Mike Hayman. Mike first became interested in trees after a downburst devastated his neighborhood of Seneca Gardens in 1987, destroying 100 large trees in a neighborhood of 300 homes. He quickly became the “tree czar” for the neighborhood and began connecting with arborists and other experts all over the country. Mike joined the Whitehall Board of Regents in the 1990s and has spent the past 30 years turning the grounds into an arboretum, highlighted by the Woodland Garden. More recently, he has been a volunteer and contractor for TreesLouisville. Mike has literally planted thousands of trees across the metro area. He is focused on planting trees that will live for 100 years or more, and experimenting with species that will thrive despite climate change.

This program is part of the Whitehall Workshop series and will be held on Tuesday, March 31, at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $15 and reservations can be made at https://www.historicwhitehall.org/whitehall-workshops.

The Whitehall Workshops are educational programs for adults that focus on plants within the disciplines of art, gardening, science and forestry. We partner with flower farmers, florists, arborists, horticulturalists and naturalists to bring fresh monthly programming to plant lovers in Louisville.

Proceeds from the program will benefit Whitehall, a historic house and estate garden owned and operated by the not-for-profit Historic Homes Foundation. Originally built in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse, the house was transformed in 1909 into the iconic Classical style mansion we know today that epitomizes the stately beauty of early twentieth-century architecture. At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s grounds offer the public multiple special gardens that are a horticultural treasure to the community.

Stay Healthy on Spring Break: Protect Your Family From Illness

Stay Healthy on Spring Break: Protect Your Family From Illness

Many families are packing up to travel for spring break, and you don't want to bring an unwelcome illness home with you. Take some basic precautions to protect your health while on vacation.

Key things to keep in mind

  • Check for disease outbreaks and stay current on vaccines. According to Connie Mendel, director and chief health strategist for the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, “Flu and COVID‑19 seem to be easing but continue to circulate, and measles cases have risenin several U.S. states. In fact, 31 states have reported measles cases. Children may need additional MMR doses before travelling. Talk to your healthcare provider about any vaccine protections needed before travelling.”
  • Practice good hygiene. “Washing your hands often helps keep you healthy,” Mendel said. “If washing your hands isn’t possible, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover coughs and sneezes and try to avoid touching your face.”
  • Be careful in crowded places. Airports, theme parks, and public transit increase exposure to germs. Wearing masks and distancing can help, especially for people at higher risk of severe illness due to weakened immune systems.
  • Support your immune system.“Eat well, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and manage stress. Protect your skin with sunscreen (SPF 30+), hats, sunglasses, and shade. Use insect repellent to prevent bug bites and ask a doctor if malaria prevention is needed for your destination if you are travelling abroad,” Mendel added.
  • Know when to stay home. If someone feels sick, resting and avoiding travel helps prevent spreading illness. Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or are severe.

“Families who take these steps can enjoy a safer, healthier spring break,” Mendel said.

Louisville Metro Crews Fill Nearly 10,000 Potholes Since January

Louisville Metro Crews Fill Nearly 10,000 Potholes Since January

Following a winter of snow, ice, and fluctuating temperatures, crews with the Louisville Metro Department of Transportation have been working around the clock to repair road damage across the city. Since January 1 of this year crews have filled nearly 10,000 potholes.

Many of the employees leading this effort are the same team members who served on Louisville Metro’s Snow Team during winter storms. As the snow cleared, these crews transitioned directly into pothole repairs, continuing their work to help keep roads safer for residents.

Potholes commonly form during winter weather when water seeps into small cracks in the pavement. As temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, weakening the road surface. When temperatures warm again and vehicles travel over the area, the pavement can break apart, creating potholes.

Transportation crews are working daily — and often overnight — to locate and repair potholes across Louisville Metro as quickly as possible.

Residents can also help crews respond faster by reporting potholes when they see them. Reports help identify problem areas and allow crews to prioritize repairs.

You can report potholes to Metro311 by:

  • Reporting online

The Dot Experience Update

Construction progress continues steadily, with visible updates taking shape across the site. Along the front of the building, new sidewalks are being installed, improving both accessibility and the overall streetscape. Crews are currently spreading and carefully leveling gravel to prepare the area for the upcoming concrete pour.

Inside, the lobby of The Dot Experience is beginning to come into focus. Large windows facing Frankfort Avenue are now in place, bringing in natural light and offering a glimpse of what’s to come. Once completed, this welcoming space will feature the main check-in desk, serving as a central point for visitors.

Elsewhere throughout the building, significant behind-the-scenes work is underway. Conduit and HVAC systems are being installed, marking an important step toward the building’s functionality. Lighting installation is scheduled to begin soon, which will further transform the interior and highlight the design of the space.

Stay tuned for more updates as progress continues in the weeks ahead!

Seneca Park Pathway Lighting Upgrade

Seneca Park Pathway Lighting Upgrade

All pathway lights in Seneca Park are currently out as part of a planned lighting upgrade. Power has been shut off, and existing light poles are being removed in preparation for LG&E to install new poles and lighting throughout the park.

We appreciate the community’s patience as we work through this significant improvement. The installation is expected to take approximately 3–4 weeks, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your understanding and support during this project.

Louisville Water Company Updates

Louisville Water Crescent Hill Construction Activity

Louisville Water has three major projects and active construction zones underway on our Crescent Hill Treatment Plant property.   For safety purposes, access to the green space across from the reservoir will be limited. Temporary fencing will be installed around portions of the green space and the construction zones.  The projects also involve closures of the Reservoir, Reservoir Avenue, and sidewalks. To assure your safety, please respect all fencing and signage.  Following is a summary of each project.  For more information go to Louisvillewater.com, Where we are working.  We recognize this work activity is an inconvenience, and we greatly appreciate your understanding as we work to complete these important projects.

 Reservoir Relining Project

Our project to reline the reservoir is progressing. The walkway around the reservoir is closed and Reservoir Avenue will remain closed on weekdays between Frankfort Avenue and Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center to allow the work to continue safely and smoothly. Reservoir Avenue will reopen at the close of business every Friday and stay open until Monday morning.  Due to increased construction activity, Reservoir Avenue at Frankfort Avenue will be closed Monday – Friday. To access Mary T. Aquatic Center, please use Brownsboro Road.  Louisville Water would like to remind the public that there is no parking on Reservoir Avenue between Frankfort Avenue and Mary T. Aquatic Center.  It will be necessary to tow vehicles if the no parking ban is ignored.

Residual Line Project at Crescent Hill

Louisville Water is constructing a new residual line to remove treatment residual from the plant.  This line will connect with the recently constructed residual line we installed in Zorn Avenue and River Road.  Currently, our contractor is working on our property that is adjacent to the fountain on Frankfort Avenue.  In the coming weeks we will bore under Frankfort Avenue.  This work will not impact traffic on Frankfort Avenue.  After boring under the road, the line will run behind our basins parallel to Pennsylvania Avenue.  We are currently installing temporary fencing in this area.  This will restrict access to the green space from Pennsylvania and portions of Reservoir Avenues. The project is expected to last approximately 12 months.  When completed the temporary fencing will be removed and the area will be restored.

Crescent Hill PAC System

Louisville Water has started construction activity at the Crescent Hill Treatment plant adjacent to the railroad tracks between Pennsylvania and Reservoir Avenues. The work will involve upgrading the existing powder activated carbon (PAC) system and construction of silos for additional PAC storage. PAC is critical to our treatment process, and this upgrade will allow us to improve water quality and continue to meet new drinking water standards.  Construction is expected to last approximately 18 months.

To safely access the site, it is necessary to construct a temporary access road between Pennsylvania Avenue and the construction site.  Residents should expect normal construction activity and noise during the project. It will also be necessary to close the sidewalk between Pennsylvania and Reservoir Avenues.  After completion of the project the access road will be removed, and the sidewalk will be restored and open.

MSD N. Galt Avenue Project

lou msd

After investigating the sewer and stormwater drainage lines on N. Galt Avenue, MSD has found several blockages that will be fixed through point repairs and pipe rehabilitation. The work is underway and will take approximately three months.

An MSD contractor has already made two point repairs near 109 N Galt Ave and will continue to move north along the street until all the point repairs have been complete.

The next repairs will happen near 119 N. Galt.

Traffic will go down to one lane near the work. Street parking may be reduced near the work.

After the point repairs are complete, Robinson Pipe Cleaning will line the storm and sanitary sewers with Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP), which is a quick and trench-less process that will add 50 to 100 years to the lifespan of the pipes. Before the contractor leaves, restorative ground and asphalt work will be done

Paving Operations RESUME!

paving

Paving operations have resumed now that temperatures have warmed up for the season. Crews are back out improving streets across Louisville Metro.

Louisville Metro repaves streets each year to preserve roadway conditions, extend the life of existing pavement, and provide safer, smoother travel for everyone. Regular paving helps prevent more costly repairs in the future and protects the City’s infrastructure investment.

To see which streets are currently scheduled for paving, visit the "Paving" page at louisvilleky.gov. Please note that all listed projects are weather permitting and subject to change.
