Valley Chess just claimed the JCPS Chess Championship for the 4th consecutive year, and they didn’t take the easy road. They knocked off previously undefeated Ballard and previously undefeated Central to seal the title. Huge shout-out to Samuel Hennig and Delwyn Tellez, who both went a perfect 4-0, and to Lynoxx Smith, Rye Vavra, and Jordan Keith, each finishing 3-1.
Next stop: Chicago for Nationals.
Valley is locked in. Let’s go.
Please join me in congratulating Officer Christopher Grossman for being selected as the Third Division Officer of the Month for January 2026. He was instrumental in the below described call for service.
On 12/17/2025, Third Division officers were dispatched to a missing person with diminished capacity. The run stated the 89-year-old subject suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, currently required medication, and had not been seen since 0400 on the same day as reported. Officers quickly responded to the scene, searching the home and the immediate area, in addition to gathering information for the missing persons report. A photo, along with a physical description, was quickly relayed to other responding units. Officers notified the LMPD Missing Persons Unit with the initial information.
While physically searching nearby stores, ponds, and residential areas, officers were simultaneously calling all nearby hospitals in hopes the subject had been transported to the hospital, unknown to family members. The Air Unit was paged and was currently in route to the location.
Officers continued to patrol the area, ultimately locating the missing person in the parking lot of Wal Mart located at 10445 Dixie Hwy, approximately 1 mile from the subject’s address. The subject had no shoes on at the time he was found but was in good health otherwise. Officers transported the subject to his incredibly grateful family members where they were advised of possible ways to determine their loved one’s location in real time.
The actions of all officers involved allowed this vulnerable missing person to be returned home safely and should be commended. The ability to deploy to an area and work as a unified team prevented any harm to the missing person. These incidents increase the confidence of community members in the Louisville Metro Police Department, advancing our mission to develop strong relationships with citizens.

A portion of Blevins Gap Road near Saw Mill Road will be closed for approximately 10 weeks beginning Jan. 20 to allow for a culvert replacement project. The work is necessary to improve drainage and maintain the safety and integrity of the roadway.
A culvert is a structure — typically a pipe or concrete box — that allows water to flow underneath a road instead of across it. Replacing an aging culvert helps prevent flooding, reduces erosion, and protects the roadway from long-term damage.
While the road will be closed through the work zone, local access will remain available. Drivers will still be able to reach Blevins Gap Road from Dixie Highway on one end and from Stonestreet Road/Caps Lane on the other. However, motorists will not be able to travel the full length of Blevins Gap Road during construction. The work area is located near 4021 Blevins Gap Road.
For drivers needing to travel around the closure, a signed detour route will direct traffic to the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265/Highway 841).
-
Use the Dixie Highway exit to access the west side of Blevins Gap Road, as the closure is located south of the exit.
-
Use the Stonestreet Road/Caps Lane exit to reach the north side of Blevins Gap Road, with the closure also located south of that exit.
See the detour map below for reference. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time while the project is underway.
Four snow events this season, repeated freezing and thawing, and winter road treatments have taken a toll on Louisville Metro streets. These harsh conditions weaken pavement and lead to potholes.
In 2025 alone, Louisville Metro's Department of Transportation has filled more than 48,860 potholes. Reporting them helps crews respond more quickly, keeping roads safer and smoother for everyone throughout the winter months.

Louisville Metro's first Pop-Up Drop-Off event of the year is right around the corner, and we want to make sure you have the official information. Please share the graphic below with friends, neighbors, and community groups.
We're thrilled to announce a new addition for 2026: Goodwill Kentucky will be on-site collecting gently used textiles and household items. It you've still got the bag of donations sitting in your trunk, this is the perfect chance to finally give those items a second life.
These events are designed to be a one-stop-shop for responsible decluttering - recycling, donating, and proper disposal all in one place. And your participation truly makes a difference. Last year, Pop-Up Drop-Offs achieved a 53% diversion rate, keeping more than half of all collected material out of the landfill. That's momentum worth building on.
As we kick off a new year, we're encouraging residents to embrace a reduce and reuse mindset rather than a throw-away one. Reducing waste starts long before items reach the curb or a Pop-Up Drop-Off - by choosing durable products, avoiding unnecessary purchases, and being mindful consumers. Every item donated, recycled, or avoided in the first place helps reduce waste and supports a cleaner, more sustainable Louisville.
We can't wait to see you at a Pop-Up Drop-Off this year! Join us at Sun Valley Park and Ashby Lane Baptist Church on March 21, 2026 for the first one. And mark your calendars for the second one at UofL Shelby Campus on April 4!
