Louisville's Freight Action Plan is kicking off with the Heavy Freight Survey. This is a chance for members of the public to have direct communication with the Mayor's administration while they craft this policy. People across District 6 will be impacted by whatever is decided, so it is important that we make sure that the needs of all of our residents are made known. There are also three informal public meetings scheduled by the Department of Transportation where we can show up and communicate directly.
While we have expressed disappointment that none are currently scheduled for our area, we are also fortunate to have many District 6 residents actively involved and organizing on this issue like the Old Louisville Mobility Coalition, and our office has been assured that DOT will attend the OLMC meetings regularly too. Attend the public meetings if you can, and definitely fill out the survey!
Stop by one of the DOT open-house meetings:
• Jan. 12 | 4 – 6 p.m. | Berrytown Recreation Center
• Jan. 13 | 4 – 6 p.m. | Southwick Community Center
• Jan. 14 | 6 – 8 p.m. | Americana World Community Center

This week in Minneapolis, ICE officers killed a legal observer in her car. While wearing masks, three officers left their vehicle and, with guns drawn, aggressively approached her. Eyewitnesses say that the woman was attempting to comply with a shouted order to leave when she was shot in the head at point-blank range. She died on the scene.
Multiple masked men pointed a gun at a woman in her car. There is zero question that the masks added to this deadly situation: deliberately increasing the fear and intimidation of the woman in her car while contributing to a sense of unaccountable power for the ICE agents.
My ordinance to ban masked police at every level failed by a single vote last month, with one Democrat joining every Republican in voting ‘no’ and another Democrat voting ‘present.’ We don’t have the power to abolish ICE at the Metro Council, or to convene trials to hold them accountable; we do have the power to say that law enforcement concealing their identity is not allowed in Louisville.
Masked gestapo with the state sanctioned power to kill are incompatible with a free society and are a clear threat to the safety of the public. I will refile my legislation to ban law enforcement masking. Together, we have the power and obligation to organize against abuses of power and to protect our community. We can start with local victories like banning the dangerous practice of law enforcement concealing their identity while we work towards national change.
Solidarity,
Councilman JP Lyninger
