Infant formula recall: What families need to know
ByHeart, a baby formula company, has issued a recall of all its infant formula products across the country, which includes both cans and single-serve sticks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a multistate outbreak of infant botulism that might be linked to ByHeart’s “whole nutrition” infant formula products.
Currently, no cases have been reported in Jefferson County.
Parents and caregivers with ByHeart infant formula products in their home should discontinue using them and dispose of them.
ByHeart infant formula products are not provided by our Women Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program. Families in the program should not be affected. WIC-approved formulas remain safe.
Breastfeeding as a healthy option
This recall is a reminder of how important safe infant feeding options are—and how vulnerable families can feel when those options are disrupted. While not always possible for every family, breastfeeding remains a reliable and healthy source of infant nutrition.
Formula insecurity and mixing risks
Formula recalls can sometimes lead to formula insecurity, prompting parents to stretch their supply by over-diluting formula. This practice can be dangerous. Over-dilution may cause hyponatremia, a serious condition where sodium levels in the body drop too low, potentially leading to seizures in infants. Improper mixing can also result in poor weight gain and other health issues.
Always following the mixing instructions on the formula can ensure your baby receives the proper nutrition.
We encourage WIC participants to continue to use their WIC benefits for the foods their families need. Families are encouraged to keep their WIC appointments and stay in contact with their local WIC clinics.
