LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 3, 2025) – Mayor Craig Greenberg announced today that the Main Library (301 York St.) will temporarily close starting Monday, Dec. 1, as work on a multi-million-dollar renovation project moves into public areas. The closure is expected to last up to 12 months.
Originally built in 1906 with support from Andrew Carnegie and expanded in 1969, the Main Library is Kentucky’s largest public library facility and the hub of the Louisville Free Public Library system. Renovations will add more than 16,000 square feet of public space, create a fully accessible entrance, reopen the third floor, and provide expanded meeting areas, new furniture, and modern finishes.
The project, funded through the American Rescue Plan and private donations to the Library Foundation, began in February and totals more than $8 million. Renderings and details are available at LFPL.org/MainLibraryProject.
Expanded Services During Closure
To support the community during the closure:
-
Goodwill Industries will expand computer access at East and West Broadway campuses.
-
Re:Center Ministries will add weekend hours for women and children.
-
Vincent de Paul will launch a new day shelter program.
- LFPL will open a remote computer center at 721 S. Brook Street with free internet, printing, and social work support.
-
Transportation assistance will be provided through partnerships with TARC, HEART, Block by Block, and Goodwill.
- Additional outreach services, including a water trailer, will be available.
Library System Updates
- All LFPL branches now operate 9 a.m.–8 p.m. (Mon–Thu) and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (Fri–Sat).
-
Portland Library reopens in December after its own $8.7 million renovation.
-
Sunday hours added at Highlands-Shelby Park and Portland branches, bringing nine locations open on Sundays.
- A new bookmobile joins the fleet, increasing access across the city.
Homeless Initiative Grants
Mayor Greenberg also announced $1 million in Homeless Initiative Fund Grants to seven local organizations providing shelter and case management services, including Volunteers of America Mid-States, Wayside Christian Mission, and YMCA of Greater Louisville.
“These partnerships ensure we continue meeting community needs during this transition,” said Mayor Greenberg.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has launched the I-65 Central Corridor Project—a multiyear effort to replace and rehabilitate interstate bridges along one of Louisville’s busiest stretches of I-65. The project spans from I-264 (Watterson Expressway) to the Muhammad Ali Boulevard interchange in downtown Louisville.
This vital corridor supports some of Kentucky’s largest employers and destinations, including UPS, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, the University of Louisville, and numerous downtown businesses, organizations, and healthcare providers.
The project’s primary goals are to enhance safety, prevent unplanned closures, and extend the life of these structures for decades to come. Over the next three years, at least six bridges in the project area will be replaced or rehabilitated.

Tired of all the leaf blowing and raking?
Take this as a license to chill this fall, and just leave your leaves where they are! Fallen leaves provide overwintering habitat for a variety of insects, including endangered pollinators. When you bag or mulch your leaves, you remove that habitat and destroy beneficial insect larvae.
Can’t resist the urge to move those leaves? Blow or rake them into a neat pile at the base of a tree, then leave ‘em be. Learn more about the benefits of leaving the leaves and native “yardening” from our friends at Wild Ones Louisville!
Keep leaves out of the street
Avoid blowing leaves into the street. If you see street sweeping signs posted, please keep the street clear so crews can properly clean up naturally fallen leaves. Large piles of leaves that have been intentionally blown into the street will not be collected.
Free leaf drop-off sites
Metro Public Works offers free leaf drop-off from Tuesday to Saturday, November 4 – December 6. Closed: November 27 – 29 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
✅ Accepted: Loose leaves, leaves in paper/compostable bags or reusable containers
🚫 Not accepted: Trash, plastic bags, or other yard waste
♻️ Reminder: If you bring leaves in a reusable container, please take it back with you.
Drop-off locations (open Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.):
- Public Works Yard – 10500 Lower River Rd. (enter from Bethany Lane)
- East District Operations Center – 595 N. Hubbards Ln.
- Shawnee Park Athletic Complex – 230 Southwestern Pkwy.
- 535 Meriwether Ave – across from Solid Waste office
Curbside collection
Curbside yard waste collection is available throughout Louisville Metro. We want to remind residents and businesses that yard waste should not go in the trash. Please collect leaves, grass clippings, branches, and tree trimmings in a separate container or paper yard waste bags so these materials can be sent to our local composter — where they’re turned into useful Earth products like mulch and soil.
Seasonally, pumpkins and Christmas trees can also go into yard waste. Just be sure to remove all decorations and follow your service provider’s size and preparation requirements.
Together, we can keep compostable materials out of the landfill and make the most of what the Earth provides.
Households with elderly (60 years +) or disabled individuals receiving Social Security, SSI, Pension, or Black Lung benefits are able to pre-register (by appointment if they meet the subsidy criteria) Benefits will not be paid out until on or after November 3rd

Bats sometimes roost in attics, garages, barns, under shutters, and behind gutters. If you find a bat near your home, do not touch it. Bats that are active during the day or unable to fly may carry rabies. Recent cases show no human contact, but caution is essential.
Why Rabies Matters Rabies infects the central nervous system and is fatal once symptoms appear. Preventive treatment after exposure includes rabies immune globulin and a vaccine series—recommended for both bite and non-bite exposures. Rabies spreads through bites or scratches from infected animals. In Kentucky, bats and skunks are the most common carriers.
Prevention Tips
- Vaccinate pets against rabies.
- Avoid contact with wildlife.
- Seek medical care immediately after potential exposure.
In a recent case, a family pet encountered a bat. Fortunately, the dog was up to date on rabies vaccinations.
If Your Pet Encounters a Bat
-
Call LMPHW at 502-574-6650. Your pet may need quarantine. Notify us if quarantine occurs outside your home.
-
Report bites or scratches during quarantine to LMPHW.
-
License and vaccinate pets as required by Louisville Metro Animal Services.
