District 6 News and Updates

Barret and Ellison Construction Update

Traffic calming work has started this week at the intersection of Barret Avenue and Ellison Avenue.

This Council-Directed Traffic Calming project includes:
--Concrete medians on Barret Avenue
--Marked pedestrian and bicycle crossings with new curb ramps on the east side of Barret Avenue
--Installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB)
--Extension of the eastbound bike lane on Ellison Avenue to Barret Avenue, connecting to the existing shared-use path on the east side

Traffic Update:
-- Ellison Avenue eastbound will be closed to thru traffic at Schiller Avenue this week.
-- During the project, Barret Avenue lanes will shift for sidewalk and center-street work, with flaggers on-site during concrete pours.
These improvements will make Barret Avenue safer and more accessible for everyone — whether you’re walking, biking, or driving through the area.

Construction is expected to be complete by mid-November.
Stay tuned for updates as work moves forward!

Organizing Corner XVI: Who Will Go Hungry?

The Federal Government shutdown recently became the second-longest in United States history, surpassed only by 35 days spanning December 2018 and 2019 under the first Trump Administration. Federal workers already furloughed have had their permanent employment threatened, government programs & offices have been thrown into disarray, and now a crisis is on the horizon that threatens to overwhelm Louisville's safety net.

A week from Monday, 600,000 Kentuckians will lose their SNAP benefits. That number represents 1 in 8 residents of the Commonwealth. The majority of the people who receive these benefits are unable to work: children, the elderly, and the disabled; the majority of the remainder who can work, do. While there is no need to justify feeding the hungry, it's worth painting the full picture for clarity.

Even before the loss of SNAP benefits, area food pantries have already seen a steady increase in demand this year as the economy lags for the working class and the prices of basic groceries continue to rise. In fact, today for the first time ever in five decades of serving the community the Calvary Episcopal's food pantry on 4th Street ran out of food and had to close early. Twice this week, 164 people visited the pantry in only two hours. Both days were the most people who had ever been served by the pantry.

I have a partnership with Central Community Ministries for regular Coffee with A Councilman community office hours that coincide with the pantry. I've seen first-hand the need being served there. Our District 6 Advisory Council recently identified La Casita Center, with their food assistance program and other critical community benefits for our Latinx neighbors, as a nonprofit that they were interested in exploring ways we can support. Even before the shutdown and this threat to critical benefits, we knew that there has been increased demand to help provide for basic human needs—now, it is a crisis.

The working class is already squeezed by unbearable pressures as the costs of housing, food, energy and healthcare skyrocket. Real wages have dropped steadily for fifty years. Rent, legally barred from price controls in our state, spirals out of control and everyday it costs more to buy a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, a bag of oranges, and everything else we need to survive.

Even after this shutdown ends, the need will still be with us. In the richest country in the history of the world, with an economy that provides enough for all but only for a few, what will we do to meet these needs?

While we ponder these larger questions, Calvary Episcopal is at 821 S 4th Street. The food pantry is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Non-perishable food items or monetary donations donations are accepted 9 AM to noon on those days. To ask questions or address other needs you can reach out to the office of Central Community Ministries at 502-587-1999.

Solidarity,
Councilman JP Lyninger
