Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I want to focus on one very special and sensitive topic in this newsletter: suicide awareness and prevention.
A few months ago, a close friend of mine took his life. This is a man that I went on vacations with and our kids went to school together. He was a businessman, a family man, and a Veteran of the United States Navy. By any outside measure, his life would have seemed idyllic. Unfortunately he isn’t the only man I know who has done this in the past couple years. When I got the news I started questioning everything. How often does this happen? Could I have done something to prevent this?
I contacted the Major in charge of LMPD’s 8th patrol division. I asked her to pick a period of time over a year and let me know how many homicides vs how many suicides we have had in the 8th division. The results are as follows: in the past year and a half, the 8th division has had 3 homicides, but we have had 21 suicides. You read that right. If you live in the 8th division, you are 700% more likely to be at risk of suicide than homicide. That information shocked me. For all the time we spend fighting homicides, it is clear that we need a broader effort on fighting suicide.
I then asked about the demographics of the people who have died by suicide. Again, I was shocked. The people taking their lives are almost all middle-aged men. I believe that of the 21 victims, they were all between the ages of mid-thirties to seventies and other than 1 case were all male. Nationally over 80% of suicides are committed by this demographic and studies show there has been a 50% increase in suicides of men between the ages of 50-59.
I am attaching to this newsletter an informational graphic that includes a list of services that are here to help. That includes hotlines, local mental health resources, and the Metro Public Health website on suicide prevention. If you have ever had these thoughts, please avail yourself of these services.
Although my appeal is particularly to those most affected by this, I also want to appeal to everyone to help share this information. Rather than wondering what we could have done after the fact, lets be proactive and share this information in the hopes that someone who needs it will see it and take the opportunity to ask for help.
Finally, I beg everyone to reconnect personally and socially in any way you can. I am a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church Men’s Group that meets once a month. I can’t tell you how much those couple hours once a month with other men helps my soul. Please find a group of people who you identify with and socialize with them. We are social creatures and isolation
created by technology and modern society is not good for us. Please avail yourselves of social connections that invigorate your soul.
I will have a regular newsletter soon with local political updates. Please share this far and wide. Let’s save lives.
Humbly Yours,
Anthony Piagentini

Our cat of the week is Gallium! He also plans on being ADOPTED for Halloween but if not he'll be Garfield. Meet Gallium at Animal House! He’s around 10yrs old. He loves affection, especially chin scratches! He is FIV+ but that’s ok, he can still live with other cats, but always consult your Vet.
Our dog of the week is Lydia Deetz!! She’s going to be ADOPTED for Halloween… we hope 😉She’s strange, unusual and she knows it. Lydia Deetz is the dark queen of the play yard, rocking a morbid sense of humor and a heart of gold (somewhere under that dramatic flair). Bring this enchanting girl home and let the haunting begin say her name three times and she might just appear wagging her tail!
