Hello neighbors and friends,

I’m excited to introduce our District 7 intern, Kamani!

Kamani joined us on September 2 and will be with us through December 4 as part of her fall semester internship, a partnership with the University of Louisville and the Louisville Metro Council. She’s majoring in Criminal Justice with minors in Spanish and Political Science. Impressive, huh?

This semester, Kamani is enrolled in Spanish 201, Criminal Research, Communication Statistics, and Political Science 510. After completing her undergraduate studies, she plans to attend law school, with the goal of owning a firm and practicing in multiple areas of law. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, creative writing, Pilates, and watching movies.

During her time with us, Kamani will be rolling up her sleeves on a couple of important projects. One involves researching the use of flock cameras in other cities. While Louisville uses these cameras sparingly, residents here in Louisville Metro have mixed feelings about them. Kamani’s research will help us better understand how other municipalities view the advantages and disadvantages, and I’ll use her findings to foster data-driven conversations with my Council colleagues. She’ll also be reaching out to businesses along Brownsboro Road to learn how ongoing construction projects have impacted them. We know it’s been tough for many businesses whose customers have had trouble navigating the roadwork. So, Kamani will gather input directly from owners, and we’ll share her findings with the mayor’s office in hopes of finding creative ways to support our local businesses while construction continues.

p

In addition to the research projects, Kamani will attend the three Louisville Metro Council committees I serve on — Labor and Economic Development, Government Oversight and Appointments, and Budget. She’ll wite brief summaries of each meeting. Her first summary is featured below under Metro Council News.

I’m very pleased to have Kamani on board. She brings a calming spirit and a sense of curiosity to our office. Please join me in giving her a warm District 7 welcome!

As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve you. I hope to see you out this weekend, enjoying the many activities around our community.

Save a Bird - Lights Out!

l

Each year, millions of birds migrate over Louisville. It is for this reason we ask you to be mindful about the lighting at your home. Many birds are injured or killed due to artificial lighting at night that knocks them off course or cause them to fly into windows and buildings.

Here's how you can help, Louisville. Throughout the months of September and October, between 11:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m., please reduce artificial light at night by turning off nonessential lights and closing blinds and curtains that attract lighting.

There are other ways to help. Please click here for more information.

Showing Up and Caring Out Loud

September 8 is recognized nationwide as 988 Day, a time to raise awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and the power of showing up and caring out loud.

In Louisville, Seven Counties Services is one of the original members of the 988 Lifeline, a national hotline that provides 24/7 confidential support for mental health concerns, suicide, and substance use. Suicide remains a serious public health issue and is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States.

Over the past year, the local 988 call center handled 12,771 calls, with nearly 9,000 coming from the Louisville Metro area. The hotline is available to anyone through phone, text, chat, and video phone options.

In addition to responding in real time, mental health professionals at the center also make follow-up calls. Over the past year, they placed more than 6,000 outgoing calls to ensure individuals remained safe and supported.

On 988 Day, help spread the word that hope and help are only three numbers away.

If you or someone you know needs immediate support, visit our Suicide Prevention webpage for more information and resources.
