Wastewater data from the Kentucky Wastewater Data Surveillance System reports a high level of COVID-19 for Jefferson County. Kentucky’s respiratory disease dashboard also shows an increase in emergency department visits for COVID-19: reporting 45 visits in June, 121 in July and 322 in August.
“It’s important to consider that schools are back in session and cooler temperatures are on the way as well as the time of year when respiratory viruses like COVID, RSV, and flu start to circulate,” said Dr. Kris Bryant, pediatric infectious diseases specialist and associate medical director for the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. “Each year in the U.S. those viruses cause millions of people to be ill, thousands to be hospitalized and even deaths. Every day is a good day to practice good hygiene and other measures to prevent illnesses, including vaccination.”
Prevention strategies everyone can take to protect themselves and others from respiratory illnesses:
- Stay up to date with recommended immunizations. Talk to your doctor or trusted healthcare provider about what may be recommended for you and your family.
- Practice good hygiene like washing your hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue, and cleaning commonly touched surfaces.
- Wearing a mask offers an extra layer of protection from respiratory viruses that are spread by coughing, sneezing, talking. They can especially be helpful in certain settings like crowded spaces, especially when respiratory illnesses are high in our community, as well as if you spend time with someone who is at much higher risk of getting very sick.
- When sick with a respiratory illness:
- Use precautions to prevent spread. Stay home and away from others.
- Seek health care promptly for treatment as it may help lower your risk of severe illness.
People at high risk of severe illness
Respiratory viruses can make anyone sick, but there are certain risk factors that can increase a person’s chance of getting sick even needing hospitalization. People at higher risk include:
-
Older adults. As people get older, their immune systems weaken over time. Most deaths from respiratory viruses happen in people older than 65.
-
Young children.Infants and toddlers have immune systems that are still developing. Their lungs and airways are also smaller which makes respiratory viruses more of a threat.
-
People with certain medical conditionsincluding pregnancy, weakened immune systems and disabilities.
To learn more about people at higher risk for severe illness from respiratory viruses, visit the CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The new website, StopScams.ky.gov, will serve as a one-stop resource on how to spot scams, ways to report and resources for recovering what was lost should someone fall victim. The website also offers Kentuckians the option to sign up for scam alerts through email or text message, offering direct updates on the latest emerging scams.
The website was created in partnership among state agencies and private resources to be a trusted source of information on active scams in Kentucky and how to avoid them.
Team Kentucky’s message is simple: Pause, check and protect. When you are contacted by someone or a company you do not know, pause. Before taking any action, check reliable resources and do your research. Search the internet, talk to your family, friends and professionals before acting. And finally, protect your personal information by learning ways to boost your digital security.

A 2023 Pew Research Center study found that 32% of adults in the United States have tattoos and 22% having more than one. Ear, body, and facial piercings have also grown in popularity.
Over the past two months,15 new body art facilities in Louisville have successfully completed the permitting process. While several have already opened their doors, others remain under construction and are expected to receive final approval soon.
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness inspects all tattoo and body art studios twice a year to prevent the spread of bloodborne infections or diseases like hepatitis C. If you decide you’re ready for a tattoo or piercing, here are some important things to know.
What are the most common violations in tattoo studios? Why do we inspect them?
The most common violations are:
- Bloodborne pathogen training has expired.
- Client records are not maintained.
- Violating restrictions on procedures for clients under 18.
- Expired needles and instruments.
Inspections are essential because tattoo-related infections can pose serious health risks—even be life-threatening. Clients may be exposed to harmful pathogens ranging from hepatitis viruses to staph bacteria. In some cases, tattoos have been associated with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a dangerous antibiotic-resistant superbug. These infections are often linked to the use of contaminated needles and poor hygiene practices. That’s why we stress the critical importance of proper sterilization techniques, maintaining personal hygiene, and safely disposing of waste generated during tattooing and body piercing procedures.
What do we mean by body art? Does that include piercings?
Body art includes tattooing, body piercing, ear-piercing, permanent makeup and microblading.
What about microblading? Is that considered tattooing?
Microblading is a semi-permanent form of brow tattooing.
If someone wants to open their own tattoo or piercing studio, what permits do they need?
They must submit floor plans with the full studio layout and plumbing fixtures to our Plan Review team for approval.
Where can they find regulations?
Regulations are on our website and the state website.
For more information about tattoo and body art studios and regulations, check out our video about local tattoo studios. You can also visit our Tattoo and Body Art website or call 502-574-6650.

Reservoir Relining Project
Louisville Water’s Reservoir Relining Project is progressing. The Mary T. Aquatic Center parking lot is partially open. Our contractor has fenced off the parking lot staging area and restriped the portion for public parking. Draining the reservoir continues to be more challenging than expected. We now hope to have half of the reservoir open for pedestrian use by mid to late September. Our contractor’s truck traffic and the closure of Reservoir Avenue is not anticipated until November. For more information on the project or to sign up for email updates go to

LIHEAP Summer Subsidy | JULY 28 - SEPT. 12
Mayor Greenberg has announced the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs. Enrollment started July 28, and runs until Sept. 12, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The subsidy provides households with incomes up to 150% of the federal poverty guidelines. It's a one-time benefit ranging from $41 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electrical vendor.
Jefferson County residents wishing to apply can schedule by phone by calling (502) 991-8391 or by using the Office of Social Services Appointment Scheduler. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at the time of application:
- Proof of Social Security number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
- Proof of income from the preceding month for all members of the household.
- Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord, if electricity is included in your rent, statement from your utility company if you participate in a Pre-Pay Electric Program.
- The account number and name on the account for the main heating fuel sources and electric bill.
This summer subsidy does not require a disconnect notice or past due bill. The benefit can be applied as a credit to your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.
For more descriptions about LIHEAP income eligibility and other instructions, you can visit the website. Residents may also call the automated LIHEAP information line at (502) 991-8391 or visit LIHEAP webpage.

Our UFMP was developed from a month’s long process of investigation and community engagement. The end result is 20 distinct Findings, with 10 Strategies and associated Actions to implement the plan. This presentation will cover the process and the findings and strategies with plenty of time for Q&A.

People without a car or unable to drive should be able to get to where they need to go safely and effectively. But every day, Americans who can’t drive – approximately a third of the population – face significant barriers to mobility such as inadequate sidewalks, poor transit, lack of connectivity and dangerous roads. The needs of non-drivers are too-often disregarded in transportation infrastructure and policies. Our goal should be a transportation system designed to support all individuals, regardless of ability, age, or income, that will strengthen our communities and enhance our quality of life. To that end, the Disability Mobility Initiative, in partnership with America Walks, launched the Week Without Driving challenge so that those who have the option to drive can: 1) learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face; and 2) work with nondrivers to create more accessible commnities for all. To learn more, sign up for the challenge, and/or become a partner organization, please visit: weekwithoutdriving.org

Tickets on sale now!
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (August 21, 2025) – The Friends of the Louisville Zoo is thrilled to announce tickets for their newest fundraising event — Skelebration — are now on sale! This exclusive after-hours 21+ Halloween extravaganza is set for October 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. and promises to immerse attendees in a night at the Zoo that will quickly become their new favorite fall event!
“The Friends of the Zoo is such an amazing partner that helps ensure our Zoo remains a top destination for families across the region,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. “This new event should be incredibly popular and creates a unique opportunity for adults to enjoy how our Zoo pulls out all the stops for Halloween.”
Skelebration will provide plenty of treats, and a couple tricks, too. As adults set out on the traditional Boo at the Zoo Halloween route, they will have the opportunity to “trick-or-treat” from station to station indulging in specialty food and beverage tastings, a signature cocktail and mocktail, beer, wine, and festive treats. Some party-goers may even stop along the way to do a little dancing at the Cosmic Disco!
For those brave Skelebration guests, a visit to the spider house may offer a few spine-tingling surprises, while those looking for something a little more traditional can take a spin on the Zoo’s carousel or pose for photos with their favorite costumed characters. Guests are encouraged to wear their own costumes as well. Details about a costume contest will be unveiled on the Zoo’s website soon.
Skelebration will also offer additional opportunities to support the Zoo where guests can take home an extra special treat of their own via a bourbon pull and silent auction. Proceeds from this fundraising event will benefit special projects and capital needs of the Louisville Zoo.
Early bird tickets are $75 per person now through September 14. Tickets will increase to $90 the week of the event. For more information about Skelebration and to purchase tickets, visit louisvillezoo.org/skelebration.

Construction progress on The Dot Experience is steadily moving forward with key updates across multiple areas. The new Main Entrance awning on the KSB side of the building has been installed, offering a clear, distinct view of the latest addition. The second-floor gallery, which spans two stories, has all its windows fully installed. Above the gallery, the fourth-floor boardroom features floor-to-ceiling glass, providing spectacular views of downtown Louisville. The State Street side of the building reveals another perspective of the new addition, with the first-floor corner housing the back of a large classroom and the second floor serving as the main gallery.
The Dot Experience will open October 2026.
