Hello Neighbors and Friends,
Did you see the WHAS11 news coverage yesterday about the traffic congestion in and around District 7? A couple of residents were interviewed and stated how difficult it is to maneuver through traffic with all the construction going on around the VA Medical Center. It was also reported that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has listened to our concerns about the burdens construction has caused mortorists.
Below is a copy of a KYTC press release that was issued yesterday. Please note the changes being made, and mark your calendar to join me this Saturday, August 16th, for the next "Muffins with McCraney" neighborhood meeting. We will hear from transportation professionals, public works officials, and state representatives about construction projects and solutions to ease the pain of traveling on our roadways today.
If you've ever wanted your voice to be heard and your suggestions to be implemented, you will want to join me for this very special and informative neighborhood meeting. Please don't miss the opportunity to speak up and make a difference in beautiful District 7.
Grab your keys and drive on over to the meeting. I'll see you there!
Efforts Underway to Minimize Traffic Impacts for I-264 Widening and Improvement Project
Measures focused on easing congestion while maintaining safe work zone travel
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 12, 2025) – As work ramps up on the $130 million Interstate 264 and U.S. 42 interchange improvement project, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is taking steps to minimize traffic impacts for motorists, neighborhoods, and nearby schools. The project will increase highway capacity and safety by widening the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and reconstructing the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) interchange.
Rebuilding the interchange requires one-lane traffic on a half-mile section of Brownsboro Road in each direction near the bridge over I-264 through January.
To minimize delays there and help motorists navigate the work zone, state highway crews and contractors are optimizing traffic control – sign up for emailed traffic alerts here – finding ways to add extra lane space, and providing on-site assistance to keep drivers safely moving.
“We’re doing everything we can to ease congestion for drivers in the area who have been affected by construction activities,” said Chief District Engineer Matt Bullock. “This widening project is a major investment in the long-term future of this region and we appreciate the community’s patience as we work to make travel safer and more efficient for the long-haul.”
Current and planned efforts to reduce work zone traffic impacts in the area include:
-
Adjusting traffic signal timing to allow more traffic through the corridor during peak times.
-
Using new radar-based vehicle detectors and live monitoring of traffic flow at select signals, which can better ensure vehicles “trip the light” and signals can be adjust in real-time to reduce vehicle wait times and improve traffic flow.
-
Expanding left-turn lane space at the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) and Rudy Lane intersection to relieve congestion and prevent backups, improve intersection efficiency and reduce bottlenecks during high-volume periods.
-
Deploying law enforcement at the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) and Rudy Lane intersection to assist with traffic management.
-
Enhancing pavement markings and installing additional signage along the corridor to clearly convey lane shifts, signal phases, and traffic pattern changes.
-
Maintaining a project website and traffic alert signups to keep everyone informed through both the U.S. 42 interchange rebuild and subsequent construction work over the next year.
The U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) lane reduction is necessary to maintain traffic across the U.S. 42 bridge over I-264 while it’s demolished and rebuilt – one half at a time. The work is an early and critical phase in preparing the corridor for added interstate capacity. Once complete, the project will deliver long-term improvements including safer travel, increased capacity, and reduced congestion.
The interstate project is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2027. More details, including project timelines and traffic impacts, will be shared online as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for email alerts regarding weekly traffic impacts pertaining to the project.
