Join us on Tuesday, August 5 at 6:30 PM at the Western Library (604 South Tenth Street, Louisville, KY 40203) for a vital evening of dialogue on how the legal system impacts our daily lives.
The forum will feature insights from:
-
Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers
-
District Director Amy Washburn
-
Councilman Ken Herndon
-
Senior Associate Director Tihisha Rawlins
Following opening remarks by Attorney Whethers, panelists may share introductory comments before diving into a Q&A session led by written questions from the audience. Representatives from participating agencies will respond and reflect on pressing community concerns.
The event is expected to run approximately one hour.
This is an opportunity for meaningful engagement on the role of justice in our neighborhoods—come curious, come inspired, come ready to be part of the conversation.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.
National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. It is held on the first Tuesday evening in August.
On Friday, July 25th, the Smoketown community came together to honor its rich history with the unveiling of a striking new archway on Logan Street. Joined by Mayor Craig Greenberg, Louisville Tourism, Roots 101: African American Museum, and several community leaders, we marked a meaningful milestone in the neighborhood’s ongoing journey of pride and preservation.
As part of the celebration, Lamont Collins, founder of Roots 101, presented Legacy Awards to two extraordinary Smoketown residents:
-
George Tinsley — A retired NBA player and former KFC executive, Mr. Tinsley grew up in Smoketown and built a remarkable career as a multi-franchise owner and business leader. His journey from neighborhood roots to national success continues to inspire future generations.
-
Ruby Hyde — A beloved community historian and advocate, Ms. Hyde was raised in Sheppard Square and has dedicated decades to preserving Smoketown’s legacy. Her leadership in installing the neighborhood marker in 1995 stands as a lasting tribute to her tireless efforts.
This celebration is a testament to the vibrant spirit and enduring contributions of the Smoketown community—and the stories that continue to shape Louisville’s cultural landscape.

Enrollment starts July 28 and runs until September 12, 2025, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Summer Subsidy Component provides households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines a one-time benefit ranging from $41 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor.
Jefferson County residents wishing to apply may schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling (502) 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at time of application:
- Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
- Proof of income from the preceding month for all members of the household.
- Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord if electric is included in your rent, statement from utility company if you participate in a Pre-Pay Electric Program.

The goal of the “Get Busy” initiative is to provide middle-school-aged youth who live in the areas of our city most affected by gun violence with new attractive opportunities and activities after school and on weekends throughout the 2025-2026 school year.
Louisville Metro “Get Busy” grant funds will be awarded for the fiscal year 2025-2026. This new funding opportunity seeks to support groups of community organizations working together to support Louisville’s youth. Proposals should be collaboratively authored and submitted by three or more community organizations and must articulate how each organization’s existing programming will be enhanced by this collaboration.
Programming through the “Get Busy” initiative must be physically located within the Russell, Park Hill/Algonquin, and Southside/Americana neighborhoods, and each of the three locations will receive a single grant for $116,000. While the programming must take place in those neighborhoods, it should be inclusive of children from any neighborhood. The programming must also have a personalized mentorship component and focus on attracting and serving as many middle-school-aged youth as possible.
The grant application opened July 21, 2025, and remain open until Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 5 pm.
The application process will take place in the Euna Grants system (formerly known as eCivis). Information on how to access this system will be provided at the information session.
