Earlier this week, Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) announced a confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro. The health department has learned that the infected individual visited the Little Clinic located inside Kroger, 4915 Dixie Highway,on Wednesday, July 9. As of July 16, there remains only one confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro.
Out of an abundance of caution, LMPHW and Kroger continue to engage in contact tracing. Anyone who visited the Kroger's Little Clinic between 9:15 a.m. -12 p.m. on July 9 may have been exposed to measles.
LMPHW recommends all potentially exposed individuals monitor themselves for symptoms of measles and take following steps based on their vaccination status:
Two documented, MMR vaccines or known measles immunity: No additional vaccines are needed.
One documented MMR vaccination: Talk to your healthcare provider about a second MMR vaccine.
No prior MMR vaccines: Contact the health department at (502) 574-8207 and stay at home through July 30.
Know the symptoms of measles
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads through the air. Symptoms usually begin 8 to 12 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. The characteristic measles rash typically appears three to five days after symptoms begin, often starting on the face and then spreading down to the rest of the body. If you develop any of these symptoms, please stay at home and contact your healthcare provider for further instructions.
Anyone who has symptoms of measles should notify healthcare provider before arrival so that precautions can be taken to prevent the spread of infection.
Protect yourself
Two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective against measles, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first dose of measles vaccine is routinely administered in combination with mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) to children at age 12 months through 15 months, and a second dose at age 4 through 6.
Children 6 through 11 months of age that are traveling internationally are recommended to receive a dose of MMR ideally at least two weeks prior to travel. This dose does not count toward the recommended vaccine series and should be repeated to ensure child receives two total doses on or after the first birthday.
Older children and adults should be up to date on recommended MMR vaccinations. Booster doses of MMR vaccine are not needed for people who have received MMR vaccines.
To get the MMR vaccine, contact your primary care provider. LMPHW also provides vaccines for children and adults at its Immunization Clinic. To schedule an appointment, call 502-574-5380.
As part of Team Kentucky’s commitment to safety, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces the awarding of a contract for bridge joint replacements on the section of Interstate 65 in Louisville locally known as “Hospital Curve.” Work will require a temporary interstate closure the weekend of July 25.
While in-house repairs to joints and surrounding pavement have maintained this area, full replacement of expansion joints will improve safety, help prevent recurring potholes, and reduce the need for future maintenance closures. The project will replace the joints on both the southbound and northbound lanes of I-65 at mile point 135.6, about 1 mile south of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.
The project includes work that cannot be done alongside traffic for safety reasons, which will require a full closure of southbound I-65 at the repair site.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, and continuing through 5 a.m. Monday, July 28, crews will close the left three lanes of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, limiting access to I-65 South. Motorists should detour by continuing on I-65 South to I-64 East, I-64 West, or I-71 North. Additionally, the I-64 East and West ramps to I-65 South and the I-71 South ramp to I-65 South will close beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 25.
Once the interstate reopens on the morning of Monday, July 28, I-65 South will be reduced to one lane through this corridor through Wednesday, July 30, at 5 a.m., as work continues.
The Transportation Cabinet will also take advantage of the interstate closure to make unrelated repairs near the Kennedy Bridge, with a goal of improving safety there by installing a high-friction surface treatment (HFST) from the end of the Kennedy to the bridge over Witherspoon Street. HFST increases pavement friction, particularly when wet weather makes roadways slick, and also helps protect concrete surfaces.
Additional weekend lane closures will be scheduled at a later date to complete joint replacements on I-65 North. KYTC will provide further updates as those closures are confirmed.
A road closure will take place on Robbs Lane between Outer Loop and Gayeway Drive. This closure will occur July 28th, 9 am to 3 pm, and last only for one day. Please see the LOJIC and detours maps above.
A different concert will be held on select Fridays through August 8, 6 - 10 pm at Highview Park, 7122 Briscoe Ln, Louisville, KY 40228.
July 25th - An Evening with The Monarchs
A few of the faces have changed but the group has vigilantly preserved their unmistakable style. If you first heard The Monarchs in the '60s, or if you hear them 20 years from now, you'll hear the smooth vocal and instrumental sounds that made them what they are today.
The Monarchs are Louisville's Musical Ambassadors. But it is a wise group of musicians who also realize that a savvy audience will move on unless you continue leaving them wanting more. That's why their playlist includes the songs you grew up with and hits from today.
The event is open to the public, family friendly, and free. Local vendors and food trucks will be on hand with a variety of food options. People are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the show at Highview Park. Sponsored by local councilmembers.
