Hello Neighbors and Friends,
You may have seen the recent news reports about rodent droppings at a couple of Kroger stores in Louisville and active rodent infestation at the Holiday Manor Kroger in District 7. Samantha Goote, Inspector, Louisville Metro Health Department, reported that the rodents were getting into the building and nesting inside. "Their hideouts were successfully located," Goote stated.
I reached out directly to Division President Jake Cannon. Mr. Cannon assured me that Kroger is taking every measure to combat the issue. He vowed to remain vigilant, and issued the following statement:
"At Kroger, safety is one of our long-standing Core Values—a responsibility we’ve upheld for 95 years in the Kentuckiana region and one we will always take seriously.
Our commitment to food safety is deeply embedded in our operations. We maintain a dedicated food safety team that ensures compliance, monitors trends, and supports our stores directly. This team includes certified food safety professionals, and we partner with independent auditors to regularly inspect our facilities often going beyond state-mandated requirements.
In terms of pest management, Kroger follows rigorous, proactive protocols. Every store receives routine third-party pest control service, and we’ve established a robust reporting system that triggers escalated responses when thresholds are met. Regional leaders oversee store-specific action plans to ensure swift and effective resolution.
Following reports of mice activity at several store locations, Kroger has implemented a comprehensive and urgent response plan. We’ve taken immediate actions including enhanced cleaning procedures, and full-site inspections by licensed pest control experts. We are working closely with the Louisville Metro Health Department to ensure that all corrective actions meet or exceed regulatory standards.
Our pest management efforts are guided by one priority: protecting the health, safety, and trust of our customers, associates, and neighbors. We are reinforcing store-level protocols, improving vendor oversight, and collaborating with public health experts to deliver a cleaner and stronger shopping experience.
Kroger remains committed to accountability and the highest standards of food safety across all of our stores. We are taking every necessary step to maintain the trust of the communities we serve."
Have a great weekend, District 7, and stay dry!
Councilwoman Dr. Paula McCraney
Work advancing on I-264
and U.S. 42 improvement project
As part of the $130 million improvement project of Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) in Louisville, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of extended lane closures on U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) beginning this evening, Friday, July 18.
Lane closures and traffic shifts will occur on U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) from Rudy Lane to Glenview Avenue beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, July 18, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 21. The lane closures and traffic shifts are necessary for contract crews to remove the raised barrier median to prepare the roadway for the reconstruction of the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over I-264 (Watterson Expressway).
Following the scheduled weekend work, U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) eastbound will be reduced to one through lane west of Rudy Lane, and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) westbound will be reduced to one through lane at Northfield Drive. Turning movements from U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) to I-264 East and West on-ramps will not be affected. These traffic control measures are expected to remain in place through the reconstruction of the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over I-264 (Watterson Expressway). Motorists should heed signage, use caution, and plan ahead when traveling.
Big progress continues on the new Robley Rex VA Medical Center, right here in the heart of District 7. This much-needed facility will serve thousands of veterans and their families in our community and each milestone brings us one step closer to opening day.

- Foundations for new perimeter fencing along the south side of the property will begin soon
- Chillers in the Central Utility Plant will be energized in the coming weeks
- Site grading is underway on the south end in preparation for paving
- Foundations for the laundry facility on the west side continue
- Work continues on the water tank next to the existing water tower
- Progress is steady on the guard house near the entrance
- Interior framing and utility rough-ins are moving ahead in the East and West Bars of the medical facility
- Drywall, insulation, and painting are ongoing in the West Bar
- Loading dock and laundry facility work on the west side continues
- Utilities and equipment installation are ongoing at the Central Utility Plant, including exterior masonry
- Utility and elevator installation continues in the North and South Parking Structures

It’s all in this week’s Mayor’s Minute.
Earlier this week, Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) announced a confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro. The health department has learned that the infected individual visited the Little Clinic located inside Kroger, 4915 Dixie Highway, on Wednesday, July 9. As of July 16, there remains only one confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro.
Out of an abundance of caution, LMPHW and Kroger continue to engage in contact tracing. Anyone who visited the Kroger's Little Clinic between 9:15 a.m. -12 p.m. on July 9 may have been exposed to measles.
Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness have announced a confirmed case of measles in an adolescent who recently traveled internationally to an area with ongoing measles transmission. This is Kentucky’s 13th measles case so far this year.
Local health officials are working closely with the Kentucky Department for Public Health to notify and monitor anyone who may have been exposed. This comes as the United States faces its largest measles outbreak since the disease was declared eliminated here in 2000. The CDC has already reported more than 1,200 cases nationwide in 2025, with multiple large outbreaks linked to global travel.
What You Need to Know
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can spread through the air and remain for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. Early symptoms typically appear 8 to 12 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. A rash usually develops three to five days after symptoms begin.
Vaccination is Key
The best protection against measles is vaccination. The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is recommended in two doses: the first between 12 and 15 months old, and the second between ages 4 and 6. Two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles.
Mayor Greenberg urges everyone to check their vaccination status and make sure they’re up to date, especially families with young children.
“Your health and safety are our top priorities,” said Mayor Greenberg. “If you’re not sure about your vaccination status, now is the time to talk to your healthcare provider.”
