As part of his Safe Louisville crime plan, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) are launching a new initiative called Get Busy. The goal is to provide middle-school-aged youth who live in areas that are most affected by gun violence with new opportunities and activities after school and on weekends throughout the 2025-2026 school year.
“We know that preventing violence in Louisville requires a comprehensive strategy, and one of the vital components is providing safe activities for young people in neighborhoods with the most urgent needs,” said Mayor Greenberg. “Louisville is fortunate to have incredible non-profit partners doing work in this space, and this funding will provide opportunities to expand or develop programming to serve more young people in new and creative ways.”
OVP is offering three $116,000 grants to proposals from groups that address violence and promote youth development. Each proposal must involve a minimum of three community organizations. The programming must take place in the Russell, Park Hill/Algonquin, and Southside/Americana neighborhoods. The proposals must also have a personalized mentorship component and focus on attracting and serving as many middle-school-aged youth as possible.
One grant will go to each of the three neighborhoods.
Applications open on July 21, at 12 a.m. on the OVP website. There will also be an information session at the OVP office on July 21 from 1-2:30 p.m. If you cannot attend the meeting in-person, there will also be a virtual option.
The application deadline is August 20 at 11:59 p.m.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness recently detected mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in the Tyler Park area and parts of the Highlands. Crews have already fogged the area to help prevent infection and control the mosquito population.
So far, no human cases have been confirmed this year in Jefferson County. Most people infected show no or mild symptoms, but people over 60 and those with certain health conditions are at higher risk for severe illness.
Tips to Stay Safe:
- Use insect repellent as directed
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors

Each year, MSD’s Urban Reforestation Program partners with local organizations, neighborhood groups, and residents to plant 1,000 trees across Louisville and Jefferson County—strengthening our community’s green infrastructure one tree at a time. These trees actively manage stormwater while enhancing neighborhoods with beauty, shade, and cleaner air. Trees—and the green spaces they support—are powerful allies in protecting our waterways, reducing erosion, and creating a healthier, more resilient city for all.
The Urban Reforestation Program is now accepting applications for tree planting projects. Grants will pay for trees planted within the MSD Drainage Service area, which includes all of Jefferson County except for the cities of Shively, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews and Anchorage.
Visit https://louisvillemsd.org/trees for more information and to download the application. The application deadline is Friday August 1, 2025 at 5pm ET.
Please contact trees@louisvillemsd.org or (502)540-6022 with any questions.
