This month, we are challenging you to take one small step toward a cleaner, greener Louisville.
Tuesday, Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability officially launched the annual Plastic Free July celebration, a month-long initiative encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics and embrace more sustainable alternatives.
Plastic Free July in Louisville is part of a global movement that empowers millions of people across more than 190 countries to reduce single-use plastic waste. By joining this international effort, the city of Louisville aligns with a shared mission to create cleaner and healthier communities, protect natural ecosystems and inspire long-term environmental change.
Whether it's swapping single-use plastics for reusables, saying no to plastic straws or bringing your own bags to the store -- every action counts.
Not sure what's recyclable in Louisville?
Download the Recycle Coach app and follow kNOw Waste Louisville on social media to get personalized tips, collection reminders and the "What Goes Where" tool to help you reduce waste the smart way.
Let's show our city, and our planet, some love this July.
You can participate this Plastic Free July by:
- Sharing a picture of a reusable swap for a disposable item on social media and tagging @SustainLouisville for a chance to win sustainable swag
- Attending the screening of the documentary We’re All Plastic People Now on Thursday, July 24 at Trellis Brewing, hosted by Beyond Plastics Louisville, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. Trellis Brewing has generously pledged one dollar for every beverage purchased that evening to benefit the Kentucky Waterways Alliance, an organization committed to protecting, restoring, and celebrating Kentucky's Waterways.
- Following @SustainLouisville and @KnowWasteLou on social media to learn more about the issue and how one can take action – all month and beyond.
Don't forget to use #PlasticFreeJulyLou to inspire others.
Together, we can kNOw Waste and say YES to a cleaner future.
Share your feedback on proposed Industry Road safety improvements
Louisville Metro Public Works’ Department of Transportation is committed to reducing deadly and serious injury crashes on its roadways through data-driven solutions. One strategy proven to be effective is rightsizing, also called a road diet or roadway reconfiguration. Rightsizing improves safety by aligning roadway design with traffic volumes, typically by using pavement markings.
Repairs to concrete panels on Industry Road are planned for Spring 2026, and traffic volumes do not support the current roadway configuration. By rightsizing after pavement repairs are completed, we can improve safety at minimal cost.
The Louisville Department of Transportation intends to rightsize Industry Road from the existing four-lane section (two through lanes per direction of travel) to a three-lane section (one through lane per direction of travel and a center two-way left-turn lane). Two design alternatives are being considered for the remaining space:
Buffered bike lanes: 5-foot bike lane with a 3-foot buffer between the bike lane and through lane, or
Hatched shoulders: 8-foot shoulder with hatching inside to discourage inappropriate use. Hatched shoulders are areas next to the road that have diagonal lines painted on them to show they are not driving lanes.
We're less than two weeks away from one of the funnest days of the year -- CycLOUvia!
Frankfort Avenue will be closed to car traffic from 2 - 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, to create a safe, welcoming space for neighbors to walk, bike, run, roll, skate, or stroll along the corridor.
Ewing Avenue will remain open for cross traffic and LMPD will be there to ensure safe crossings for anyone on wheels or on foot.
Visit the “CycLOUvia” webpage on louisvilleky.gov to learn more.
To help our hardworking waste collection crews stay safe and cool during the hottest months of the year, we’re adjusting our summer schedule. Starting Monday, July 7 until Labor Day week, crews will arrive to work one hour earlier than usual to begin truck inspections and prepare for their routes.
What this means for you: To ensure your garbage, recycling, and yard waste are collected without delay, please have all items set out by 5 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
This temporary schedule change helps our crews avoid the peak heat of the day while continuing to provide reliable service to our community. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we prioritize the health and safety of our team.
Stay cool, and thank you for helping us keep our city clean!

Our next Pop-Up Drop-Off event will be Saturday, July 19 at the Fern Creek Elementary and High School parking lots. Please enter at 8815 Ferndale Rd. Vehicles will exit through the high school lot.
Important reminders:
-
Do not arrive early! All Pop-Up Drop-Off events start at 10 a.m. A line of vehicles causes traffic backups and prevents our equipment from entering.
-
Try giving away usable items first! We see a LOT of decent items being trashed or recycled at our events. Some residents even offer these items to workers - staff is not allowed to keep items. Please try to donate or give away BEFORE coming to our waste and recycling event.
-
Loads of construction materials, lumber, and loose debris are NOT allowed! Take these loads to the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave. instead. Pop-Up Drop-Off events are very popular - please follow the rules so we can keep the line moving.
-
Separate your loads into the various categories. More can be recycled and the line moves faster when you are ready to offload your items at each station.
Upcoming paving projects scheduled for this week can be found on our new "Paving" page on louisvilleky.gov, as well as our interactive Louisville Metro Paving Dashboard where you can view paving projects scheduled for the year and conditions of city streets.
