At last week’s Council meeting, we voted on a resolution originally called the ‘People’s Consent Decree’. I voted against it and the final vote was 13 for and 12 against. One of my colleagues was traveling on official business and had to leave before the final vote was taken. I know he would have voted against this so, as far as I am concerned, this resolution does not represent the voice of the Council as it should have failed 13-13 if all Council voices were recorded. My objection was that it was confusing and didn’t paint the full picture of all of the great work LMPD has done to improve their process and become a better department. This seemed very one-sided and, as one of my colleagues said during the hearing, I believe it is time for this community to heal. My colleague Ginny Mulvey-Woolridge proposed an amendment that did attempt this but that was defeated in a 13-13 vote. As the Mayor ultimately stated, this Resolution does not affect anything. The Mayor will implement the reforms he has committed to and Council has the legal authority to conduct oversight of all aspects of the executive branch.

The Metro Council unanimously adopted a resolution establishing the America250KY Commission. This group will be comprised of citizens from various groups and organizations throughout the community with the goal of helping to create events and opportunities for residents to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence.

We are voting on some new legislation soon including:

• New regulations to address the stealing of copper wire that has affected street lights across the community
• I have just dedicated over $125,000 in local Infrastructure Dollars from District 19 to pave all 4-5 rated sidewalks in the district which will catch up our backlog of sidewalk repairs to things officially reported as of June 30^th, 2024
• We are updating our licensure for traffic haulers to hold them accountable for not securing trash and allowing it to dump onto our streets

The Louisville Bats present "Metro Council Community Nights," an opportunity for all constituents of every Metro Council district, geared toward, but not exclusively for, residents who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend a Bats game. Louisville Zoo's Dinopalooza

Dinopalooza has arrived to the Louisville Zoo! This event includes nineteen animatronic giants (such as a Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Parasaurolophus) spread throughout the zoo and an interactive dig pit to look for fossils. No need to rush, though, as these dinosaurs will be at the zoo through September 1. This exhibit is included with zoo admission and free for zoo members. Click here for more information.

Step into Wellness with the New Louisville Zoo Walking Club

Free registration at the Zoo daily from 8 - 9:15 a.m.

The Louisville Zoo Walking Club is reopening with a new name and new way to join! From March 1 through October 31, participants are invited to walk the Zoo before regular hours and watch as the Zoo wakes up during this free program. Entry is from 8 to 9:15 a.m., with exit by 9:30 a.m.

Membership to the Zoo is not required to enroll in the Walking Club. Walkers must simply register in person at the Zoo’s entrance before their first walk. Registration is available daily during program hours. After registering, members will receive a Walking Club membership card for quick entry on future visits.

The one-mile, paved walking loop includes both flat areas and hilly terrain, with directional signs to keep walkers on track. Walkers enter at the front gate and are checked in by a Zoo staff member.

Zoo exhibits, concessions, rentals, and other services are not open during Walking Club hours. If walkers wish to see the animals, they must re-enter the Zoo via the front gate at 10 a.m. with a paid admission receipt or Zoo membership.

Free Mulch For Jefferson County Residents

Louisville is now offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents every Monday through the end of summer. Louisville Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division has started giving out natural, dye-free mulch to residents and nonprofits in need of free mulch. The mulch can be picked up from the Urban Forestry Division's office, located at 9200 Whipps Mill Road in Lyndon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday, except on national holidays. If you plan on getting free mulch, you will need to make an appointment by clicking here. You'll also need to bring a Jefferson County ID and your own containers such as trailers, truck beds, buckets or garbage bags, to transport up to three cubic yards of mulch.

New Requirement to Renew Driver's License in Kentucky

Starting January 1, 2025, all Kentuckians must undergo a vision screening to renew their driver’s license. Multiple states have adopted mandatory vision screenings to ensure drivers have the visual acuity required to operate a vehicle safely.

This new requirement, enacted during the 2021 General Assembly, aims to promote highway safety by ensuring that all drivers maintain good vision throughout their driving career. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet  (KYTC) is responsible for administering the vision requirement law for drivers seeking to renew their license. Message from LMPD

Over the past month, the 8th Division has experienced a concerning increase in thefts from vehicles and auto thefts, particularly in our residential areas. In response, our dedicated officers and detectives, in collaboration with various units across the Louisville Metro Police Department, have worked tirelessly to address and combat this criminal activity. Their diligent efforts have led to several arrests, and investigations continue as we identify additional suspects. Although we have seen a decrease in these incidents, they remain a top priority for our patrols and enforcement actions. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding your property. Most of the recent car break-ins involved unlocked vehicles, and the stolen vehicles had keys left inside them. Additionally, several incidents involved open garages resulting in thefts from vehicles and auto thefts. By taking simple preventative measures, we can significantly reduce the attractiveness of our neighborhoods to criminals. Please consider the following prevention tips to greatly reduce your chances of being victimized: ·        REMOVE KEYS FROM INSIDE VEHICLES ·        LOCK VEHICLE DOORS ·        CLOSE GARAGES ·        REMOVE GARAGE DOOR OPENERS FROM VEHICLES ·        REMOVE ANY VALUABLES FROM INSIDE VEHICLES Your cooperation is essential in making our neighborhoods safer and less appealing to potential thieves. By locking your vehicles and ensuring keys and garage door openers are not left inside, we can collectively deter criminal activity. In addition to our enforcement efforts, the 8th Division has hosted several community events over the past month, with more planned in the near future. These events provide an excellent opportunity for you to engage with our officers, ask questions, and learn more about our efforts to keep our community safe.
