THE TROLLEY HOP MAKES A COMEBACK!

trolley hop map 3
First, thank you to the businesses who provided feedback for the Trolley Hop Route.  Your participation was vital to effectively plan and execute this initiative in an inclusive manner.  During our business community meeting at UCHM in March, we took note of some of the concerns that were raised regarding parking congestion and the trolley route.  Based on the feedback we received, we have confirmed Mellwood Art Center as a park & ride location and the route no longer includes Lynn Family Stadium.  I've attached an updated trolley route map to this email.
We also have three F.A.T. Friday dates scheduled as follows:
Friday, July 25th 4-9pm
Friday, October 24th 4-9pm
Friday, May 29th 4-9pm
Here are ways your business/organization can get involved if interested:
  • Create special offers, discounts, or activities for F.A.T. Friday dates
    • Please complete the form below no later than 2 weeks prior to the Trolley Run so your business can be included on our website, press releases, etc.  It's never too early to submit this information.  The deadlines are July 11th, October 10th, and May 15th.
  • Hang poster/flyers at your location
    • Contact Jasmine Presley to coordinate flyer drop off - jasmine.presley@louisvilleky.gov
  • Become a sponsor
    • Sponsor benefits include visibility on our website and promo materials and naming rights at one of the trolley stop locations
    • Small business sponsorship packages are $250 annually
    • There will be 8 trolley stop locations so spots are limited
    • Contact Jasmine Presley if interested in becoming a sponsor - jasmine.presley@louisvilleky.gov
  • Help us spread the word
    • Follow us on social media - @councilmanandrewowen
    • Subscribe to our newsletter for more updates
More information is forthcoming including website, Trolley stop locations, etc.  We look forward to hearing from you and bringing the trolley excitement back to Districts 8 and 9!  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

June Puts Spotlight on National Cancer Survivor Month

June Puts Spotlight On National Cancer Survivor Month

There's a lot we still don't know about cancer. While some cancers can be treated and prevented, it is important that we keep learning about the causes of cancer. The Southern Environmental Health Study seeks to do just that.

You can make a difference today by participating in research to help understand why some people do and do not get different cancers.

You do NOT need to be a cancer patient to participate. Compensation provided.

For more information, please call 855-710-9489 or learn more about the study

Whitehall to Hold Garden Party Fundraiser

Whitehall to hold Garden Party fundraiser

Louisville, KY. – Whitehall House & Gardens is pleased to announce that it will host its third annual Garden Party at the historic mansion at 3110 Lexington Road on Friday, June 13. The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction in the formal garden, followed by a seated dinner under the tent on the garden terrace. The dinner will be followed by live music courtesy of Kudmani.

Individual tickets to the Garden Party are $200 per person. Tickets for the event may be purchased at https://www.historicwhitehall.org/. Sponsors of this year’s event include Bartlett Wealth Management; Dwyer DesignScapes; Highland Cleaners; Sterling Thompson Company; and Stites & Harbison.

Whitehall House & Gardens

Proceeds from the Garden Party will benefit Whitehall House & Gardens, a historic home owned and operated by the nonprofit Historic Homes Foundation. The mansion began its life in the 1850s as an Italianate farmhouse. After extensive renovations in 1909, the house was transformed into the Classical Greek Revival-style mansion known today as Whitehall. Its collection features original gaslight fixtures and French and American antiques. Guided tours are offered Monday-Friday, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s gardens have become the primary focus of its educational outreach, offering unique opportunities for both the amateur and professional horticulturalist. Throughout the year the public is invited to participate in workshops, lectures, and tours – all inspired by Whitehall’s special collection of trees and plants. A small, but ever-growing arboretum features over 500 trees, including a rare specimen collection that has become an important resource for propagation of interesting species. Whitehall’s woodland garden, a Victorian stumpery nestled in a wooded corner of the grounds, presents a regionally unprecedented collection of ferns and other woodland plants. Not only a popular tour destination for garden clubs and other horticultural groups, the garden has received national recognition as an official display garden of the Hardy Fern Foundation. The gardens are open to the public free of charge from sunup to sundown 7 days per week all 12 months of the year.

Pop-Up Drop-Offs: Making recycling easier for Jefferson County residents

Pop-Up Drop-Offs: Making recycling easier for Jefferson County residents

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free, convenient recycling and large item disposal events held monthly from March through November across Jefferson County. These events are open to all Louisville Metro residents and rotate locations to maximize accessibility.

The most popular site continues to be the University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus—and the May 31 event proved no exception. A total of 828 vehicles came through to shred sensitive documents, recycle electronics, dispose of bulky items and more.

At each event, participants report their ZIP code and the types of items they’re dropping off. Materials are weighed by category to calculate the landfill diversion rate—the percentage of waste kept out of landfills. Since the program began in 2020, that rate has steadily increased. In 2024, 54% of all collected materials were diverted. Impressively, the May 31 event at Shelby Campus achieved a 69% diversion rate!

The top three categories at every event are consistently:

  • Large items
  • Electronics
  • Document shredding

While the order varies, these remain the most common materials brought in. After each event, a participation map is created to show turnout by ZIP code. Most attendees visit the location nearest to them, but nearly every neighborhood in the county is represented.

📍 Next Event: Join us this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 14, at Doss High School, 7601 St. Andrews Church Rd., for the next Pop-Up Drop-Off event.

🗓️ View the full schedule, find out what you can and can’t bring, and get tips for a smooth experience at: Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps

Take Steps to Have a Healthy Summer With Kids

Take Steps to Have a Healthy Summer With Kids

The summer months are full of opportunities for kids to get outside, spend time with friends and family, and recharge for another busy school year.

Protect against the heat. You can have fun in the sun while staying hydrated and protected from harmful rays.

  • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and don’t forget to reapply as needed throughout the day
  • Wear clothing that shades skin from the sun or has built-in sun protection
  • Drink plenty of water: Use a colorful water bottle as a reminder to stay hydrated throughout the day

Find ways to stay active. There are lots of ways to stay physically and mentally healthy in the summer. Louisville has many great parks for individuals and families to enjoy.

  • Learn a sport with friends in the neighborhood or at a local park
  • Take a walk in the park and count how many steps you take
  • Rest is a healthy part of an active routine. Establish a plan to get enough sleep each night and stick to it

Prevent summertime injuries.  Take the extra steps to put safety first at home, on the go, and everywhere in between.

  • Wear a helmet on bikes, scooters, skateboards, or anything else on wheels
  • On playgrounds and amusement parks, always follow safety signs
  • Travel smart: Keep a first aid kit nearby, buckle up for safety, and never leave kids or pets in a hot car

Be safe in and around water.  During summer trips to the beach,  lake, and pool, keep water safety in mind.

  • Wear a life jacket when participating in activities on the water
  • Practice safe swimming: Sign up for swim lessons and only swim in designated or supervised areas
  • Take a water safety class to learn more about CPR and what to do in a water emergency

Read more about sun safety at from the American Cancer Society. Read more about preventing summertime injuries from Johns Hopkins Medicine. Read more about water safety from the American Red Cross.

Roaring Return of ROARchestra! Two New Concerts Announced

Roaring Return of ROARchestra! Two New Concerts Announced

The Louisville Zoo and the Louisville Orchestra are joining forces once again to bring back the ROARchestra, with two special concerts set for this summer. After last year’s sold-out success, this cherished family-friendly event returns for its second consecutive year inviting audiences to experience a wild symphony under the stars on Saturdays, July 5 and 19.

The first concert on July 5 kicks off with Teddy Abrams conducting The Spirt of America featuring iconic works that reflect the heart and soul of American Culture. Music will include Copland’s vibrant El Salón México and Carlos Simon’s stirring The Block, a tribute to Black American life. Rounding out the evening will include John William’s themes for Jurassic Park and Star Wars.  All concluding with a thunderous finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

Then on July 19, saddle up for a rousing western-themed musical journey, celebrating the spirt of the American frontier. Under the baton of beloved Roarchestra Maestro Bob Bernhardt, this high-energy program opens with John Williams’ Cowboys Overture, setting the stage for Copland’s iconic Dance Episodes from Rodeo, including the beloved Saturday Night Waltz and crowd-favorite Hoedown. Adding authentic country color, Suede Saddle brings vocal harmonies and traditional western instrumentation — including fiddle, accordion and upright bass — for a foot-stomping good time. The evening concludes with Rossini’s William Tell Overture.

“Last year’s return of ROARchestra was a smashing success, thanks to beautiful weather and powerful music,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “Teddy Abrams and the talented musicians created a magical night under the stars — truly the wildest concert in town! We’re thrilled to partner again with the Louisville Orchestra to carry this treasured tradition into a bold, exciting future.”

“ROARchestra brings together two of Louisville’s most iconic institutions to create something truly special for our community,” says Nathaniel Koch, Louisville Orchestra Interim Executive Director. “By expanding to two concerts this year and welcoming back our Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt, who led ROARchestra for many years alongside Teddy Abrams, we’re deepening this partnership and offering more families the chance to experience world-class performances in a fun, accessible setting.”

The Zoo grounds open at 7 p.m., allowing guests to explore the Zoo or get settled in the Oasis Field.

Tickets will go on sale, starting Thursday, May 29 at noon on the Zoo’s website at Louisvillezoo.org/roar.

Adults — $30**, Children 3-11 — $15, Children 2 and under — Free, Parking is included with admission.

**Adult Tickets will increase to $35 the week prior to each performance.

Concessions, including adult libations, will be available for purchase. This event is expected to sell out; the Zoo and the Orchestra encourage guests to get their tickets early at louisvillezoo.org/roar.

Gray Street Farmers Market returns on June 5

Gray Street Farmers Market returns on June 5

Beginning Thursday, June 5, the Gray Street Farmers Market returns at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday (rain or shine) until September 25 at 400 E. Gray Street.

The goal of the market is to increase access to fresh, locally grown food in the downtown area. Additionally, the market is continuing its matching program for SNAP recipients. However, this year, recipients will be able to triple the value of the benefit. For example, if a SNAP recipient spends $10, they will receive an additional $20 to spend at the market. This benefit applies to those who spend between $1 and $20.

The market is a joint effort between the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Catholic Charities Common Earth Gardens.
