MAYOR GREENBERG UPDATE

LOUISVILLE, KY (May 27, 2025) – At today’s weekly briefing Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg was joined by city leaders at the Western Library to launch two free summer programs for students, Summer Reading and Cultural Pass. The Mayor also announced the return of the Mayorthon race series and cheered on Zachary Rara from Meyzeek Middle School, who is representing Louisville at this week’s Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Cultural Pass

The admission-free Cultural Pass program supports and encourages summer learning by providing free access and programming to young people ages 21 and under for over 45 Louisville and Southern Indiana arts, cultural, science, nature, and heritage institutions. The program runs from May 31 - August 10.

“The Cultural Pass program ensures that every young person across Jefferson County can engage in fun, educational activities in unique and safe spaces," said Mayor Craig Greenberg. "It's proven that children who are exposed to the arts show improved academic performance and develop more creative and innovative thinking. Thank you to all of the partners who will be creating memorable experiences for children and their families this summer, and doing your part to help create a stronger, safer, and healthier Louisville.”

This is the first year for the Cultural Pass App, where people can browse and search the full calendar of events, build their personal Cultural Pass schedule, get reminders, and check in, all in the palm of their hand.

Those who live or work in Jefferson or Bullitt County in Kentucky or Clark, Floyd, or Harrison Counties in Indiana, can download and register for the Cultural Pass App anytime, anywhere. Those unable to download and use the Cultural Pass App may visit their closest participating library for accessibility information.

Participating libraries include Louisville Free Public Library, Bullitt County Public Library, Charlestown Clark County Public Library, The Floyd County Library, Harrison County Public Library, and Jeffersonville Township Public Library.

The 2025 Cultural Pass App is presented via a partnership between Fund for the Arts, Louisville Metro Government, Arts & Culture Alliance (ACA), Kentuckiana Cultural Consortium and all participating library systems (above). It is supported by the Humana Foundation, Louisville Metro Government, Frances N. Alden Charitable Trust, PNC Bank, Brooke Brown Barzun Foundation, Sociable Weaver Foundation, Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, Emily Bingham and Stephen Reily, David Jones Jr. and Mary Gwen Wheeling, The Gheens Foundation, Austin and Janie Musselman, Legacy Foundation of Kentuckiana, TARC, Chase Bank, Caesar’s Foundation, Sam and Bonnie Rechter Family Foundation, Delta Dental, with media sponsorship from Louisville Public Media.

Summer Reading

Presented by the Library Foundation, the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program is a free 10-week program that encourages kids and teens to read for fun over the summer by offering prizes and incentives. Every child—from infant through 12^th grade—who completes the program will receive a glow-in-the-dark backpack, along with passes to local attractions and sporting events like the Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, Louisville Bats, and select UofL sports. To complete the program, school-aged children simply read ten books, teens read six books, and preschool-aged children and younger need to read, or have read to them, 20 books.

“Every year the Library’s Summer Reading Program helps kids and teens stay on reading level by making reading fun and rewarding,” said the Library’s Interim Executive Director Barbara Sexton Smith. “This annual tradition reaches more than 40,000 youth in Louisville Metro, helping to create a habit and love of reading that will last a lifetime.”

Mayorthon

After a successful launch last year, Mayor Greenberg announced that the Planet Fitness Mayorthon series of races are returning in 2025. Whether you're new to running, an avid walker or runner, or just looking for a challenge, the Mayorthon races are a great opportunity to get out and get active.  

Each race highlights unique aspects of Louisville:

• Race the Runway 5.02K, August 2, lets you run directly on the runway at historic Bowman Field.
• The Louisville Pure Tap 5K, August 23, starts and finishes at the historic Louisville Water Tower Park.
• The Bourbon & Beyond 5K, September 13, takes you through the Kentucky Expo Center & Kentucky Kingdom music-themed course over the festival weekend.
• NEW for 2025 the Thru the Ville 5K will take runners on a unique tour of the University of Louisville, showcasing some of the most iconic landmarks on campus. 

Residents who register for the Planet Fitness Mayorthon series save 10% off the price of all four registrations. All who complete all four races will receive a special Mayor's Mayorthon Challenge Coin.

All participants who register for any of the Mayorthon races can opt-in to receive a FREE 90-day Classic Planet Fitness Membership redeemable between the day you register through November 1st. Offer applies to new and current Planet Fitness members.

Scripps National Spelling Bee

Mayor Greenberg recognized Meyzeek Middle School student Zachary Rara and wished him well as he represents Louisville in this week’s Scripps National Spelling Bee.

KentuckianaWorks Services include high-demand job training, one-on-one career counseling, career development workshops, career search resources, access to computers, phones and faxes for job searches.

Kentucky Career Center The Kentucky Career Center offers information on unemployment benefits & claims as well as many services for job seekers.

Louisville Urban League Assists clients, primarily African Americans and individuals of low to moderate income, prepare for and find employment.  Services include counseling & placement services, training & development, pre-screening & referral services and outreach programs.
