Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you have a great weekend ahead. If this rainy day has you thinking about staying indoors, might I suggest college baseball?! I know the state of Kentucky plays a little basketball, but the baseball tournament (which starts today) includes four teams from the commonwealth: UofL, UK, WKU, and Murray State. Good luck to them all!

Here at City Hall, the budget remains our primary focus. We had four hearings this week, two of which I'd like to highlight. On Wednesday, we heard from the Office of Violence Prevention. I've shared with you before some of the progress we've seen in this area. In fact, the interim director shared a report by the Chicago PD naming Louisville as the city with the 4th highest reduction in YTD homicides on a list of 26 cities. So, what programs are proving most effective in bringing these numbers down?

Two were mentioned specifically - Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Sites which are active in four neighborhoods and Anti-Violence Coalitions (AVCs) of which we have nine. It's telling that we've seen a decrease in gun violence numbers where we have one or both of these programs and an increase in some areas where we don't. I am hopeful we can expand on these proven programs in hopes our gun violence numbers continue to come down.

Yesterday, we discussed the Emergency Services budget. An interesting program in the recommended budget involves the use of drones as 'first responders.' Imagine a call relayed to the fire department regarding a house fire. A drone gets sent to the site, theoretically arriving first. Its feed, which can be seen by first responders on their Mobile Data Terminals, shows a live wire in front of the house or maybe that more than one house is involved. I think this is a great use of resources that will improve situational awareness and safety for all involved. We would have eight drones to start with the goal of expanding to 20 as the program moves forward.

Again, I hope you have a great weekend. Please don't hesitate to call my office if we can be of assistance.

'Coffee With Your Councilman' - Monday, June 9

I wanted to send a reminder about my coffee meeting on Monday, June 9. We'll meet in the Middletown Library, 12556 Shelbyville Road, at 9 a.m. State Representative Jason Nemes will be our guest. This will be a great opportunity to hear what's happening in Frankfort and ask any questions that might be better answered by a state legislator. I'll also bring you up to speed on the city's budget process as we head into the final few weeks before we approve an amended budget in late June. I hope to see you June 9!

Budget Hearings Next Week

Due to regular committee meetings also being held, we'll have slightly fewer budget hearings next week. You can find more detail on each department below, a comment form, and more budget information here.

  • Technology Services – Monday from 3 to 4 p.m.
  • Office of Housing and Community Development – Monday from 4 to 5 p.m.
  • Public Health and Wellness – Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m.

Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use cases in Jefferson County. These can include requests for changes in zoning, variances, conditional use permits, and more. There isn't a project in District 17 listed in this week's report, though there is one just across Shelbyville Road from our district. That application is for a revised district development plan (and an accompanying waiver regarding the scenic corridor buffer) to allow the construction of a credit union at 115 Juneau Drive. Please use the link above for more information.
