Community Commitment

Dear Friends,

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) made a motion to dismiss its lawsuit against Louisville Metro Government and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).  We have every reason to believe the federal judge will grant that motion.  As a result of the forthcoming dismissal, the consent decree proposed in the lawsuit will not become effective.

While this is not the outcome we hoped for when we announced the proposed decree in December of 2024 – it is an outcome for which we planned.

We as a city are committed to reform. LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey and I are committed to reform. To ensure the promised progress continues, we’re moving forward with the Community Commitment - Louisville’s Consent Decree. This is an agreement between Metro Government, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), and the citizens of Louisville. It incorporates all the objectives in the previously negotiated consent decree and puts in place the accountability and transparency measures needed to continue building trust and improving public safety in Louisville.  We believe the Community Commitment will lead us to the same results we were pursuing with a court-ordered consent decree.  To view the entire press conference, click here.

We are embracing this opportunity to make LMPD one of the country’s most respected and transparent police departments in America. To the men and women of LMPD, thank you for your commitment to this community and the job you do every day to keep our community safe.  I know you are committed to doing your jobs the right way and continuing to build a department that earns trust with the people we serve.

To our community, thank you for pushing us forward to implement these reforms, fostering community trust, and working in partnership to build an even safer, stronger, and healthier Louisville.

With everyone’s support and engagement, we are coming together to create the public safety system our community deserves and to ensure Louisville is a city where justice is promised and practiced every day.

Sincerely,

Craig
