Special Update Regarding the Consent Decree

The Following Statement has been released by the members of the Louisville Metro Council’s Minority Caucus in response to the Department of Justice’s decision to dismiss its lawsuit against Louisville Metro.

The decision of the US Department of Justice to dismiss the case involving Louisville Metro in a consent decree is welcomed by the members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus. In December, we argued that efforts to bring real and lasting reforms to policing within our community is best accomplished by persons closely associated to this community rather than out-of-town, federally appointed persons who benefit from a slow and more costly consent decree, and who have no accountability to the people of Louisville.

Reforms to policies such as no-knock warrants, training, and investigations have already been made and are being implemented. We constructed a new state of the art first responder wellness center that benefits our officers’ physical and mental well-being. We have funded and are completing a new LMPD headquarters to improve public safety collaboration and leadership. Finally, we are focused on moving forward with the purchase and construction of a new and much needed police training facility to ensure we have the best trained officers serving our community.

The 12 Republican members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus are focused on bringing safer streets for all people in every neighborhood. We are committed to getting officers the resources they need and supporting reforms that will both ensure continued progress on reducing crime while also supporting the need for accountability and progress in terms of community engagement and respect.

Discover a Tick - Report it to Metro's Department of Public Health

tick

If you discover a tick, please share it with Metro Public Health.  The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is using results from ticks they collect and those that people share to create a map of where ticks are being reported and develop outreach and education materials based on the types of ticks and the diseases they carry.

Ticks are small parasites more commonly found in wooded, brushy and grassy areas. However, people can be exposed to a tick in their own yards, even with very little grass or trees. Exposure to ticks can happen all year round, but they tend to be more active during warmer months. They can spread diseases to both dogs and people. Ticks can transmit a number of illnesses like Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF).

How to submit a tick

-Place it in a small leak-proof container and cover the sample with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. (No plastic bags)

-Label the container with your name and contact information on it, along with this completed form. (Complete one form per tick or tick bite.)

-Drop off or mail the sample to LMPHW, 400 E. Gray Steet,  Louisville, Ky. 40202, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm

Here are the T-I-C-K rules of thumb:

Take precautions and wear insect repellent.

Inspect your body for ticks and rashes after being outdoors.

Carefully remove the head and body of the tick.

Keep monitoring your health for fever, body aches and rashes and seek medical attention if they develop.

For more information about ticks, prevention tips and proper removal, visit LMPHW’s webpage. Be sure to watch our video to learn more about our Spot A Tick and Share Program.
