Memorial Day closings and delays

The three staffed recycling drop-off locations, the Waste Reduction Center, and the Haz Bin will be closed on Saturday, May 24 in recognition of the Memorial Day holiday and will be closed on that Monday as usual. View a map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours here.  There will be no garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Urban Services District on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday. Residents who rely on private waste haulers should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.

This year’s Hike will consist of a 4-mile walk with multiple marked turnaround points throughout. Travel from the Great Lawn and follow the Ohio River east to RiverPark Place and back. The furthest distance will cross the Big Four Bridge into Indiana and come back. 

BIKE!

Participants can bike through downtown Louisville. The 1st 300 people who participate will get a New Bike Helmet courtesy of the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky. Check out the bike course below for the detailed route. 

PADDLE!

Paddlers will have the option of launching at the Harbor Lawn or the U of L Boat Docks and paddle downstream to meet the other paddlers. This year’s paddle will go from the Harbor Lawn downriver to the McAlpine Locks, through the locks and to the Shawnee Park Boat Ramp. This year participants can rent a limited number of kayaks for FREE. Kayaks and all required equipment will be available on a first come first serve basis. Participants will have to sign a waiver and get instructed on water safety. Come to the event early and find a Shack Yaks trailer to secure your reservation. 

Paddle Boards are allowed at the Mayor's Hike, Bike, & Paddle! The paddle boarders will need to completely step off their boards and onto one of the rescue boats when going through the McAlpine locks before we can lock the group down. No sitting down on the board is allowed, paddle boarders must be on the boat. Every single person will be required to wear a life jacket even if they are on a boat. All paddlers must wear a life vest. Paddles without a vest will not be permitted to go through the McAlpine Locks. 

GET ACTIVE!

Beginning at 8 a.m., there will be plenty of fun, music, and free fitness activities for you to enjoy. Get involved in activities like Yoga, Step Aerobics, Zumba, and High-intensity warm-up Fitness classes, and Workout circuits to celebrate Memorial Day weekend.

FREE t-shirts are available to the first 2,000 people. The t-shirt tent will open at 8:00 a.m., so make sure to arrive promptly to get in line! The Hike, Bike, and Paddle portions will starts at 10a.m.

Louisville is currently offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents through end of summer

Louisville is now offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents every Monday through the end of summer. Louisville Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division has started giving out natural, dye-free mulch to residents and nonprofits in need of free mulch. The mulch can be picked up from the Urban Forestry Division's office, located at 9200 Whipps Mill Road in Lyndon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday, except on national holidays. If you plan on getting free mulch, you will need to make an appointment by clicking here. You'll also need to bring a Jefferson County ID and your own containers such as trailers, truck beds, buckets or garbage bags, to transport up to three cubic yards of mulch.

Spot a tick? Share it with the Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness

If you discover a tick, please share it with us.  The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is using results from ticks we collect and those that people share with us to create a map of where ticks are being reported and develop outreach and education materials based on the types of ticks and the diseases they carry. "Our Spot a Tick and Share Program helps us identify what types of ticks are prevalent in Jefferson County and any diseases they may carry,” said Connie Mendel, director and chief health strategist for the department. Ticks are small parasites more commonly found in wooded, brushy and grassy areas. However, people can be exposed to a tick in their own yards, even with very little grass or trees. Exposure to ticks can happen all year round, but they tend to be more active during warmer months. They can spread diseases to both dogs and people. Ticks can transmit a number of illnesses like Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). "Our public health lab has the capacity to inspect tick samples to identify what types of ticks are living in our area," Mendel said. "From 2021- 2023 approximately 350 tick samples were collected and analyzed. So far, we know the three most prevalent ticks in Jefferson County are the Lone Star tick, American Dog tick and Blacklegged tick." How to submit a tick Place it in a small leak-proof container and cover the sample with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. (No plastic bags)  Label the container with your name and contact information on it, along with this completed form. (Complete one form per tick or tick bite.) Drop off or mail the sample to LMPHW, 400 E. Gray St. Louisville, Ky. 40202, from Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Here are the T-I-C-K rules of thumb: Take precautions and wear insect repellent Inspect your body for ticks and rashes after being outdoors Carefully remove the head and body of the tick Keep monitoring your health for fever, body aches and rashes and seek medical attention if they develop. Save birds by choosing to go Lights Out this spring!

You might know that millions of birds migrate over Louisville every spring and fall. But did you also know that billions of migrating birds are hurt or killed each year in the U.S.—and it’s due to artificial light at night pulling them off course or causing them to fly into windows and buildings? 

With your help, Lights Out Louisville—a Louisville Audubon Society conservation initiative—aims to change that. 

The solution is simple, and anyone can be a part of it: 

—This April and May, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., turn off non-essential lights—both indoors and outside—and close your blinds, shades, and curtains. 

—By reducing artificial nighttime light during the two biggest migration months in our area, we give migrating birds a better chance of surviving their long journeys. 

—With a few simple actions, you’ll help save birds—and save money on your electricity bill at the same time!
