From Promise to Action:Growing Safety and Opportunity
I want to congratulate Mayor Greenberg and his team for their continued commitment to making Louisville a better and safer city for all its residents. The mayor has stood by his promise to implement the Consent Decree, whether or not it’s formally adopted by the court. Now, with the introduction of the Safe Louisville plan, he’s putting forward an additional effort to enhance safety across our city.
Safe Louisville is built on three key pillars: prevention, intervention, and enforcement. The first two are especially crucial, as they aim to stop crime before it starts. In purely economic terms, it is far less expensive to address the conditions that lead to violence than it is to deal with the consequences by putting people in jail. And in human terms, the impact of violent crime—broken lives and communities torn apart—can’t be measured in dollars and cents.
I especially appreciate the focus on youth development – improving and expanding library hours, investing in parks, and creating meaningful opportunities for young people to thrive. Programs like Thrive by 5, which work to ensure access to early education for all children, are critical to breaking cycles of poverty and violence. Investing in neighborhoods that have faced long-term disinvestment is not only practical, it’s the compassionate and right thing to do. We should all be united in our efforts to raise the standard of living for everyone in Louisville.
