The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (APCD) is kicking off another year of its Air Quality Action Partners program, encouraging local businesses to make voluntary commitments that reduce emissions and increase air quality awareness.
To become an Air Quality Action Partner, a business or organization must sign up to receive Air Quality Alerts on days when poor air quality is forecast, have a system to distribute alerts to their employees, and make at least one additional voluntary commitment to improve air quality, like purchasing low-emission equipment, undertaking an energy efficiency project, or installing idle free signage in their parking lot.
Sources of air pollution with an APCD permit or registration by APCD must make two air-friendly commitments to be Partners and may complete even more impactful commitments to be recognized as Silver, Gold, or Platinum Level Air Quality Action Partners.
Potential commitments range from undertaking an energy efficiency project to purchasing lower-emitting equipment.
Over 25 businesses and organizations made commitments in 2024, providing at least 7,000 local employees with air quality alerts when air quality was expected to be “unhealthy for sensitive groups” or worse on the Air Quality Index, allowing them to take steps to reduce exposure to poor air quality and minimize their own impact on the air.
Since the program’s inception in 2021, emissions avoided due to actions taken by Partners include at least 150 tons of nitrogen oxides, 6 tons of particle pollution, 6 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs).
All businesses and organizations are encouraged to make 2025 commitments through the online sign-up form by May 16.
Partners from 2024 that have followed through on their commitments will be recognized at the Air Pollution Control Board's monthly meeting on May 21.
