The National Weather Service (NWS) is putting a heavy emphasis on the potential for major flooding late this week through the weekend. NWS is forecasting rainfall totals ranging from 6 to 10 inches across southern Indiana and the northwestern portion of central Kentucky, which includes the Louisville Metro area.
Flash flooding can cause rivers and streams to rise swiftly, pushing water onto roadways. Six inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet and cause vehicles to lose control and stall, and as little as 12 inches of moving floodwater can be enough to carry a vehicle away.
Here are some tips to stay safe and avoid flood dangers:
- Turn around, don’t drown! – Driving through flooded roadways can be deadly. Turn around if you come across a flooded path.
- Make a family emergency communication plan that includes pets.
- Assemble an emergency kit for home, work and the car.
- Stay informed: Tune in to local officials by radio, TV or social media.
- Sign up to receive emergency notifications via “LENSAlert.” It’s as simple as texting “LENSAlert” to 67283.
- Evacuate when advised by authorities or if you are in a flood-prone area. Get to higher ground.
- Check on your neighbors to make sure they’re OK.
- After a flood, avoid walking in floodwaters, disaster areas and heed road closure and cautionary signs. Stay away from electrical utility equipment and wait for the “all clear” before returning to a location impacted by flooding.

Community members are invited to attend a public input session to review initial design plans to enhance safety and accessibility along Southern Parkway, a historic Olmsted designed roadway in South Louisville.
Louisville Metro Public Works, Parks and Recreation and the Olmsted Parks Conservancy will be at the Beechmont Community Center, 205 W. Wellington Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 9 to share early plans that illustrate a vision to improve safety and connectivity for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
The proposed design includes transforming the four-lane street, between W. Woodlawn Ave. and KY-1865 (Taylor Blvd./New Cut Rd.), into a three-lane street with one travel lane in each direction and a center two-way left turn lane. It also includes adding lighting along Southern Parkway. The plans are based on feedback from residents and stakeholders.
Construction has begun on the West Kentucky Street corridor plan that will bring a community-driven vision to life. From 4th Street to 8th Street, improvements will be made to – and alongside – West Kentucky Street to improve the appearance, traffic flow and safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is based on input from community members, who requested that West Kentucky Street be transformed into a two-way road. They also asked for improvements to the pedestrian crossings at 7th and 5th streets, safer bike access, slower traffic, and a greener, tree-filled streetscape.
“This corridor is an artery that links the hearts of the California and Old Louisville neighborhoods together -- connecting residents, churches, businesses and colleges,” said Jennifer Caummisar-Kern, director of Louisville Metro Public Works. “These dynamic improvement plans are shaped by the voices of the community, feedback from not just stakeholders but from those who live, work, learn and play in the area.”
Project improvements include:
- Converting West Kentucky Street into a two-way street from 8th to 5th Street, providing a continuous east/west two-way roadway from 15th to 5th Street. The two-way conversion will include updated striping and signage.
- Adding a bike lane from 7th through 5th
- Improving pedestrian crossings at 7th and 5th
- Converting the intersections at 5th and 6th Streets to four-way stops
- Expanding the tree canopy along W. Kentucky Street between 7th and 5th
- Improving the TARC stop on 7th
- Adding/improving sidewalks and curbs
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as routes are temporarily disrupted for the benefit of public safety. This work will help enhance safety in the area by easing traffic flow, boosting visibility for businesses and organizations, and making traveling easier for all modes of transit,” said Kern. “Reducing confusion and increasing pedestrian access is important along any corridor, but especially one with numerous destinations like Simmons College, Spalding University, Ben Washer Park and the Louisville Memorial Auditorium.”
More than $1 million will be invested in this project.
During construction, parts of West Kentucky Street will be closed to traffic. Commuters are encouraged to follow posted detour routes, plan alternate routes, and allow for additional travel time. Residents who live in the area will be able to access their properties throughout construction.
Work on this phase of the project is expected to be complete by August 1, 2025.
