District 14 Community Meeting is next week!

Mark your calendar and make plans to attend our first Community Meeting of 2025! Bring a friend, bring a neighbor. This will be a great chance to get to know each other a little better as we discuss our collective vision for District 14. 

At this meeting, we will:

• Introduce the basics of the planning & zoning process
• Assist those interested in signing up for our weekly newsletter
• Discuss plans for a spring cleanup and recruit volunteers for the initiative
• Acknowledge and celebrate some incredible volunteers in our community

District 14 - Satelite Office News!

We are excited to share that we have been working diligently to set up a satellite office at the Southwest Government Center located at 7219 Dixie Hwy in effort to better serve our constituents. We plan to host district hours both by appointment and designated drop-in periods on the first and second Monday of each month starting in April. 

April 2nd and April 9th: 

Drop-in hours will be 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Appointments Only 5:00pm - 6:00pm 

Please call 574-1114 or email tina.burnell@louisvilleky.gov to schedule an appointment for April. (office is located in the left front corner of the building)

If your work schedule prevents you from participating during these designated times and you wish to schedule an appointment, please reach out to our office and we will do our best to accommodate those needs. 

District 14 Spotlight

We recently had the pleasure of hearing from Ty' Xavier Rowan, a dedicated student from Male High School, who shared his inspiring journey of personal growth and his aspiration to become an officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). Demonstrating remarkable initiative, Ty' expressed his desire to connect with an experienced officer who could mentor him over the coming years.

Without hesitation, we reached out to Sergeant Mike "MJ" Jackson, an esteemed 18-year veteran of the LMPD and an exceptional individual. Sgt. Jackson enthusiastically agreed, stating, "Absolutely. I'd love to."

We are thrilled to have arranged a meeting and facilitated this connection between Mr. Rowan and Sgt. Jackson. Their initial conversation was highly productive, and both are excited to develop this mentorship in the years ahead. Sgt. Jackson thoughtfully brought along a swag bag and a newly rebranded LMPD shirt for Mr. Rowan, adding a special touch to their first meeting.

We look forward to seeing Ty' Xavier Rowan in a future LMPD recruit class!

Received your W-2 in the mail and don't know what to do next? Louisville Metro Government is offering free tax prepping services at 15 locations around Louisville, including Sun Valley Community Center. Click the picture below for more information.

Metro 311

Metro311 is a division of Louisville Metro Emergency Services.  311 connects you to the city government and resolves your non-emergency issues.

When you contact Metro311 with a concern, a service request is created and a tracking number assigned. The service request is sent to the agency responsible for investigating the concern.

Be Aware of High Pressure Door-to-Door Sales

With warmer weather approaching, the season of door-to-door sales will soon be in full swing. Unscrupulous sellers often target consumers in their own homes, selling items such as security alarm services, pest control services, and energy-saving products. These sellers are frequently trained to engage in high-pressure or scare tactics and may misrepresent the quality and value of their products.

You are not obligated to answer the door for any salesperson. However, if you choose to do so, here are a few tips to avoid falling victim to such sellers:

1. Resist High-Pressure Tactics: High-pressure sales tactics are often associated with fraudulent activity. Do not allow yourself to be hurried, intimidated, or coerced. Remember, the salesperson is at your door uninvited and remains there only at your courtesy. You can ask them to leave at any point. 
2. Get Everything in Writing: If you are interested in buying from a door-to-door seller, ensure that you get all details in writing, including the price, warranty, and all conditions. Inform the salesperson that you will review the information and get back to them.
3. Verify Identification: Always ask for proper identification before listening to a sales pitch.
4. Exercise Caution: Be cautious about letting any salesperson into your home.
5. Avoid Sympathy Pitches: Do not fall for the “sympathy” approach, where salespersons claim they are working their way through college or use other tactics to gain your sympathy.
6. Be Wary of Referral Sales: Be cautious of any offer that includes “referral sales,” where a seller offers to pay you or promises a discount if you provide personal information of friends who might be interested in their products.
7. Avoid Hasty Payments: Do not make any payments hastily, especially for merchandise or services you have not yet received.
8. Peer Pressure: Be wary of "peer pressure" techniques where a salesperson attempts to convince you that all your neighbors have already purchased.
9. Cancellation: Make sure they explain and provide in writing the process and timeline for cancelling the contract. 

TIME is your friend. Give yourself time to think through the information presented. Talk to family, friends, or other trusted sources before you sign a contract at your door. If you didn't need it before they knocked, chances are, you really don't need it. 

Seniors are often vulnerable to high pressure door-to-door sales - so please keep an eye out for your neighbors. 

Be aware of Louisville Metro's Peddler/Door-to-door Rules and Regulations

Peddling Hours/Posted Property

1. Door to Door peddling may be conducted between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to ½ hour before sundown as published in the Louisville Courier Journal newspaper daily or 8:00 p.m. which ever comes first.
2. No business shall be conducted on Sunday or on any local, State or National Holiday.
3. It shall be unlawful for any peddler to enter upon any private premises when the same are posted with a sign stating "No Peddlers Allowed" or "No Solicitations Allowed" or other words to such effect.

Identification

A copy of the peddler permit issued by the city must be carried by each person peddling. Each peddler must also have a name tag visible at all times which includes their name and the name of the business for which they are peddling and contact information.

Remember, you do not have to answer the door. If a salesperson catches you off guard when you are outside, you can ask them to leave your property. 

Flood Safety Week with MSD

This week, March 16-22, is Flood Safety Week. Floods are the most severe natural disaster in Louisville Metro according to the Louisville Metro Multi-Hazards Mitigation Plan. Flooding can occur from the Ohio River, interior streams, or a dam or levee failure. River floods generally develop slowly over several days or weeks, but flash flood from heavy rains or a dam or levee failure can occur in just a few minutes. Everyone should be aware of the flood hazards and be prepared.

Did you know homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage? Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Protect yourself and your home by calling your insurance agent to learn more about flood insurance or by going to www.floodsmart.gov.
