Meet Your Legislators at Cafe Louie

Meet Councilwoman Mulvey-Woolridge at the Bon Air Library on March 8th!

Café LOUIE is designed to be an informal gathering of civic minded individuals interested in meeting with their elected officials to discuss local issues. When you arrive, grab a cup of Heine Brothers coffee and fill out a notecard with your specific question(s). After a brief introduction of elected officials and special guests, a trained facilitator will direct your questions to officials for comment and discussion.

All Café LOUIE meetings begin at 9am. Stick around after the event for additional programming available at some branch locations, register to vote with the League of Women Voters, sign up to be a Friend of the Library, or just visit your local branch and check out a good book!

College and Career Fair - February 1st at the Main Library

The Louisville Free Public Library’s College & Career Fair just for teens (ages 14-19), returns to the Main Library for the second year on Saturday, February 1, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet with college representatives, prospective employers, and business owners, as well as hear from keynote speaker filmmaker Kyle Rohrbach, a former Reading Rainbow producer.  

This daylong conference features numerous opportunities for teens to learn about interesting career and college paths. Representatives from the University of Louisville, Berea College, the Peace Corps, Evolve502, Brew & Sip Café, Metro Louisville Human Resources, and many more will be available in the vendor hall and offer breakout sessions throughout the day. Breakout sessions will cover business startups, freelancing, content creation, financial aid, and college choice. Attendees can also receive one-on-one college and career advice from experts on a variety of topics, including building successful resumes and portfolios, admissions essays, and scholarships.

For students hoping to break into film and television production, Watcher Entertainment producer Kyle Rohrbach will present the keynote speech “Lights, Camera, Perseverance: I Think I Made It in Hollywood,” followed by a “Paths to Production: Film School & Beyond” session. Formerly a producer on Reading Rainbow, Kyle has filmed everywhere from the White House to Mongolia. He co-produced the award-winning documentary Esfuerzo, and spent the last three years as Head of Production at comedy network Dropout, overseeing the critically acclaimed variety series Game Changer and Webby winner Very Important People.

Rhythm Science Sound, a Louisville-based collective of music producers, deejays, and music/tech educators, will close out the day alongside other professional artists in a “How I Got to Where I Am Now” panel discussion. Following the closing session, attendees will have the chance to win prizes, including wireless headphones, school supplies, portable chargers, and an all-important college staple – a laundry basket of ramen. One lucky winner will receive a new laptop (must be present to win).

The 2^nd Annual Teen College & Career Fair will be held at the Main Library on Saturday, February 1, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is made possible by a grant from the Taco Bell Foundation. Attendees can register for a free lunch at www.LFPL.org/CCFair.

Take a Survey to Help Louisville Families Navigate Child Care Options

LMG is partnering with IQS Research to understand how Louisville families navigate child care options and the challenges they encounter.  The main goal of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the types of childcare that families currently use and, crucially, what kind of childcare they would prefer if high quality options were available to them at no cost.

They are trying to engage families in District 24 by inviting you to complete a short survey about your child care experiences.  Ultimately, survey findings will inform meaningful improvements in childcare services that meet the needs of families.  

Will the responses be confidential? Yes, responses to this survey will be reported in aggregate. Only those on the research team will see individual responses. There will be an opportunity for participants to be considered for Phase 2 of the study which requires their contact information, but that question is optional.

How does someone take the survey? You are provided with a survey link (see below) specific to your Metro Council District. 

This study wants to hear from? Parents or guardians of a child or children 0-8 years old in Jefferson County.

When does the survey close? The Childcare Demand Study will close on February 14th.

How long will the survey take to complete? The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Is the survey available in multiple languages? Yes, it is available in English, Arabic, French, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili.

Respiratory Virus Season is Here! Protect Yourself from Illness

Although data shows we are moving past the peak of the respiratory illness wave this season, many people in Jefferson County – and nationwide -- are still getting sick from viruses like flu, COVID and RSV.

LMPHW’s influenza surveillance dashboard shows more than 4,800 cases of the flu have been reported in Jefferson County since the end of September, along with four flu-related deaths. The individuals who died ranged in ages from the late 30s to 70s.

A single dose of RSV vaccine is recommended for all people 75 years and older and some people 60 to 74 years of age with certain chronic health conditions that increase the risk of severe RSV infection. There is also an immunization that can help protect infants from RSV. Parents of children who are less than 8 months of age should talk to their pediatrician or primary care provider about protection against RSV. COVID-19 vaccines are also recommended for those 6 months and older.

Additional preventative measures to protect yourself and others from respiratory illnesses include:

• Staying away from sick people
• Good hand washing
• Wearing a mask in public/crowded spaces, especially if people are at higher risk for developing severe illness
• Staying home if you’re sick to avoid exposing others to illness
