A few of many activities to celebrate Dr. King
52nd Annual MLK Jr. Motorcade and Peace Walk
The event is a tradition in Louisville on MLK Day. This year, it begins at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at 28th and Broadway. The motorcade will wind through the west end to Chickasaw Park and end at King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church for a service in honor of King.
Muhammad Ali Center Community Free Day
The Muhammad Ali Center is open to the public for free on MLK Day. The center shows Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech and hosts a youth leadership panel discussion.
Please congratulate Officer Lucero Vasquez for being awarded the 6th Division Officer of the Month for December 2024 for her exemplary performance during a recent incident in the 4900 block of Quail Court. Officer Vasquez and other 6th Division officers responded to Quail Court on a Hispanic male subject who had been identified as the shooting suspect from a previous incident at this same location earlier that morning.
Officers learned the shooting victim, along with 2 other subjects barricaded themselves inside the location to get away from the suspect when he returned. Officers surrounded the apartment, made contact with the victims, and began gathering information. Sgt. Berthold called for Fire to bring a ladder, and with proper cover, officers were able to safely extract the victims out a rear second story window and bring them to safety.
Officer Vasquez then used the PA system in her vehicle and attempted to hail out the shooting suspect from the apartment peacefully. The suspect came to the front door multiple times while holding a firearm and fired one round into the air. After finding a phone number for the suspect, Officer Vasquez was able to make contact with the Spanish-speaking suspect and convinced him to surrender to SWAT peacefully.
Officer Vasquez’s ability to speak Spanish and to effectively communicate with the suspect was instrumental in resolving this situation peacefully. Over the course of more than 20 minutes, her calm demeanor and compassionate approach helped de-escalate a tense situation, ultimately leading to the subject’s peaceful surrender without further incident. It should be noted Sgt. Berthold and Officers Breeden, Cameron Duncan, Dolores Sliter, Kyle Shuttleworth, and James Steffan held the perimeter, provided cover for the extraction of the victims, and showed tremendous poise and restraint with this barricaded subject as well.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Winter Crisis enrollment is now available through Kentucky’s Community Action Network for eligible Kentucky households. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through March 31, 2025, or until designated funds have been expended.
LIHEAP Winter Crisis provides households with a benefit depending on housing category, fuel type used for heating, and income level. The benefit can be applied towards home heating cost for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil.
Benefits are paid directly to the household's energy vendor. Prior LIHEAP assistance does not impact a household’s eligibility. Households must meet eligibility requirements, including income eligibility of up to and including 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
In Jefferson County, LIHEAP Winter Crisis is available through the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. Appointments are required in advance to apply. Eligible households can apply for one or both LIHEAP Winter Crisis and MSD’s EWRAP with one single appointment.

LMG is partnering with IQS Research to understand how Louisville families navigate child care options and the challenges they encounter. The main goal of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the types of childcare that families currently use and, crucially, what kind of childcare they would prefer if high quality options were available to them at no cost.
They are trying to engage families in District 24 by inviting you to complete a short survey about your child care experiences. Ultimately, survey findings will inform meaningful improvements in childcare services that meet the needs of families.
Will the responses be confidential? Yes, responses to this survey will be reported in aggregate. Only those on the research team will see individual responses. There will be an opportunity for participants to be considered for Phase 2 of the study which requires their contact information, but that question is optional.
How does someone take the survey? You are provided with a survey link (see below) specific to your Metro Council District.
This study wants to hear from? Parents or guardians of a child or children 0-8 years old in Jefferson County.
When does the survey close? The Childcare Demand Study will close on February 14th.
How long will the survey take to complete? The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
Is the survey available in multiple languages? Yes, it is available in English, Arabic, French, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili.
Use the link below to start the survey
