RIP, Sadie - Maned Wolf who helped improve nutrition health for her kind

The Louisville Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sadie, its remaining maned wolf. Sadie was humanely euthanized after a decline in health related to both her age and long-standing chronic gastrointestinal disease, a common challenge for her species. Sadie’s life was a testament to resilience and innovation. In 2016, her zookeepers partnered with experts, including AZA Maned Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP) nutritionist Dr. Cheryl Morris and canine diet specialist Karla Haas of Rudy Green’s Doggy Cuisine, to create “Sadie’s Stew,” a specialized diet tailored to her needs. This groundbreaking formula not only improved Sadie’s health, but also became a model for maned wolf care in several AZA-accredited zoos across North America. Thanks in part to those dietary advancements, Sadie thrived and welcomed two healthy pups, Cora and Catina, the following year.  “Sadie’s life has profound meaning, helping advance the wellbeing and nutrition for all maned wolves in human care,” said Dan Maloney, Zoo Director. “She leaves a lasting legacy through her contributions to science, her offspring, and in the hearts of all who cared for her. We encourage Zoo fans to follow our social media channels and website for the latest announcements about the future of maned wolves at the Louisville Zoo.” Sadie joined the Louisville Zoo in 2014 from the Sunset Zoo in Kansas and lived to the age of 12 which coincides with the typical life expectancy for her species. Sadie’s pups, born on Valentine’s Day 2017, carry forward her legacy of care and conservation.

Flu and other respiratory illnesses are increasing in Louisville

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has received increasing reports of flu, COVID-19, Whooping Cough (pertussis) and RSV cases in the past two weeks. Outbreaks of flu have been reported in congregate and educational settings. Visits to emergency departments and hospital admission for influenza are increasing across the state.

“There is no more ‘flu season is around the corner.’ Flu is here,” said Dr. Kris Bryant, infectious disease specialist for Norton Children’s and associate medical director for LMPHW. “We are also well into RSV season, but we’ve not yet reached the peak. Cases continue to climb.”

Staying healthy

“No one wants to miss holiday gatherings because they’re sick,” said Dr. Bryant.  "There are several steps all of us can take to reduce our risk of getting a respiratory virus so we can do more of the things we enjoy.”

• Make sure you and your children up to date with your vaccines, including flu vaccine
• Wash your hands often.
• Sneeze or cough into your elbow or tissues.
• Stay home if you’re sick.
• Consider wearing a mask if you are high-risk for serious illness.

Dr. Bryant notes that while many viral illnesses just need to run their course, there are antiviral medications are available to treat influenza.

“These medications are recommended as soon as possible for anyone with severe, complicated, or progressive illness or anyone at higher risk for influenza complications. People at higher risk include those less than 5 years of age, those 65 years and older and individuals with chronic health conditions, including body mass index of 40 kg/m2 or higher,” said Dr. Bryant. “Antiviral treatment can be considered for otherwise healthy people if it can be started within 48 hours of illness.”

New dashboard tracks flu cases in Jefferson County

LMPHW has a new Influenza (Flu) Surveillance Dashboard. This interactive tool is designed to provide preliminary weekly totals for cases, flu-related deaths, and outbreaks within Jefferson County, using data from the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System. Information is collected from hospitals, laboratories, and private provider offices. The dashboard provides numbers across several different categories:

• Gender
• Race
• Ethnicity
• Age groups (adults or children)
• Location by ZIP code

Please note that these figures are preliminary and may change over time. The dashboard will be refreshed weekly as new information becomes available.

Festive events celebrating the season continue at the Louisville Zoo!

The Louisville Zoo is spreading holiday cheer this December with a lineup of festive activities for the whole family. From animal-themed holiday enrichment to a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this season.  Santa and Mrs. Claus Visit (Dec. 21–22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) The power couple of the season will make a stop at the Louisville Zoo for meet-and-greets and photo opportunities with guests. Families can also enjoy sweet treats like cookie decorating and s’mores during this special weekend.

Qannik’s Beary Happy Holiday, Dec. 21–22. Join Qannik, the Zoo’s beloved polar bear, and her animal companions as they enjoy special holiday-themed enrichment activities.  Holiday Scavenger Hunt (All Month) Guests can embark on a Zoo-wide scavenger hunt for all ages. Scan the QR code at the Zoo entrance to join the adventure and complete challenges for a chance to win Zoo-themed prizes. Holiday programming is included with general Zoo admission or membership. Louisville Parks and Recreation annual golf passes for the 2025 calendar year on sale now

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s annual golf passes for the 2025 calendar year are available for purchase. The seven-day unlimited play pass, good for unlimited play during weekends and holidays at all ten Louisville Parks and Recreation courses, is $500. A five-day pass (Monday-Friday only) is $425.

The price of annual passes covers green fees for the 2025 calendar year (January 1 – December 31), with a user fee assessed each time a pass is used. Prices vary by course and dynamic pricing may apply during peak playing times.

Annual golf cart passes are also available for purchase and are $75. A small user fee is assessed per use. Dynamic pricing may apply at courses during peak operating times for carts as well.

New annual pass holders will be required to visit the golf desk located in the parks and recreation administration building in Joe Creason Park, across from the Louisville Zoo, for photo identification. 

Those interested may purchase their 2025 pass online at bestparksever.com, over the phone by calling 574-7275, or by visiting the reservation office at 1297 Trevilian Way Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Other Louisville Parks and Recreation divisions with gift shops open around the holidays include Jefferson Memorial Forest, Riverside, The Farnsley Moremen-Landing and Historic Locust Grove. The Olmsted Parks Conservancy has an online gift shop.

Remember the Camp Taylor Elementary School pantry as you shop

Tiffany Bolling from the Family Resource Center has reached out to request food donations for the school pantry at Camp Taylor Elementary School. 

Not only do we feed our students and their families at Camp Taylor and Audubon Traditional Elementary Schools, we also have a food pantry in front of the school to feed the community. 

Our pantry is usually stocked through Dare to Care, but the food goes so quickly. Our homeless demographic has doubled from last school year. I am trying to keep up with the nutritional support I can provide, but it's a struggle.

If you are able to assist in getting us food to fill our pantry, donations can be sent to: Camp Taylor Elementary School, The Kid Connection FRC, 1446 Belmar Drive, Louisville, KY, 40213. 

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format.

Bring a can, save on admission during Wild Winter Days at the Louisville Zoo

Join the Louisville Zoo and Kroger in supporting Dare to Care Food Bank and local conservation efforts this winter

The Louisville Zoo invites guests to celebrate Wild Winter Days through February 28. Wild Winter Days offers discounted admission to the Zoo and incorporates a food drive for Dare to Care Food Bank.

Guests who bring at least one non-perishable food item per person may purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo ticket windows for $10.50 per adult and $7.50 per child or senior. Twenty-five cents of every admission ticket will also support the Zoo’s conservation efforts.

Since this partnership began in 2009, the Zoo has collected more than 30,000 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of its guests. That is the weight of nearly five male rhinoceroses!

Dare to Care Food Bank’s most needed items include canned meats like tuna and chicken, as well as canned fruit and vegetables, beans, peanut butter, soup, rice, cereal, fruit juice, and pasta. No glass containers. More details on items of need are available at daretocare.org.

The discount is available only at the gate and cannot be applied to online purchases, special fee-based programs, prepaid groups, field trips or other discounts. No refunds will be provided for tickets purchased online or in advance. While multiple canned good items per person are appreciated, only one discount applies per ticket.

The Louisville Nature Center has opened registration for the Valentine's Candlelit Hike February 13, 14, and 15.  Let candles light your way as you stroll underneath the stars this Galentine’s and Valentine’s Day.  Hike at your leisure, either on the candlelit short trail (about 3/4 mile), or the unlit longer trail (1 3/4 mile). Warm up around the fire afterward, or head indoors, where you can visit our reptiles and enjoy snacks and drinks. Participants must be 21 and over. The hikes will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Register online.

The Joe Creason parkrun is a free 5K that meets every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Joe Creason Park. December 20 - Youth Volleyball Clinic 

On December 19 and 22, Louisville is hosting the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championship.

As part of the weekend’s activities, the Louisville Sports Commission is offering a FREE youth volleyball clinic for boys and girls ages 6-12.  

The clinic is Friday, December 20, with check-in from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and the clinic from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kentucky International Convention Center, 221 S. Fourth Street, Hall D. 

College volleyball coaches will be your instructors, and the clinic will cover volleyball basics. This is open to anyone regardless of skill level.

December 21 - Candlelight Tour at Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead 

This holiday season, Blackacre Nature Preserve & Historic Homestead invites the community to experience the magic of a 19th-century Christmas through its special Candlelight Tour. Sponsored by Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, this event immerses guests in the traditions, music, and customs of the past.

The Candlelight Tour will be December 21 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Candlelight Tour provides an immersive evening experience. In the historic 1795 Stone Cottage, guests will enjoy live pioneer-era music performed by the Quintrilogy string trio and watch dancers in traditional attire demonstrate and teach dances from the period. This candlelit setting, complete with traditional refreshments and an interactive 19th-century craft, offers an enchanting and educational glimpse into holiday celebrations of the past.

Suggested donation for Candlelight Tours is $10 per person or $20 per family.

January 11 - next "Once Upon An Orchestra” event, providing free musical storytelling performances for families at Louisville libraries

The Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Orchestra are again bringing “Once Upon An Orchestra” public performances to all LFPL locations through March. 

Presented free, each branch will host one of six different, unique family programs that weave music and storytelling together in an interactive experience. Louisville Orchestra musicians perform original music created around familiar and beloved children’s books. The hour-long experiences include a 30-minute small ensemble performance preceded by a hands-on activity to build a musical instrument from recycled materials, so everyone can play along.

For “Once Upon An Orchestra,” composers from the LO Creators Corps have developed original musical scores to accompany a number of beloved children’s books, including Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In addition, this year’s series features two new compositions – Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
