Step Back in Time with Blackacre’s Holiday House Tours and Candlelight Tour

This holiday season, Blackacre Nature Preserve & Historic Homestead invites the community to experience the magic of a 19th-century Christmas through its "Holiday House Tours" and special "Candlelight Tour." Sponsored by Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, these events immerse guests in the traditions, music, and customs of the past.

Event Dates and Times:

• Holiday House Tours: November 24, December 1 and 15 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm
• Candlelight Tour: December 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm

With both events, visitors will explore the beautifully adorned 1844 Presley Tyler House,
guided by knowledgeable docents dressed in period attire. Each room highlights a
unique Christmas carol from the era, with decor inspired by the lyrics and themes of
these classic holiday songs. As guests tour the home, they’ll gain insight into the holiday
traditions that brought 19th-century Kentucky families and communities together,
including tree decorating, gift-giving, and festive gatherings.

The Candlelight Tour provides a more immersive evening experience. In the historic
1795 Stone Cottage, guests will enjoy live pioneer-era music performed by the
Quintrilogy string trio and watch dancers in traditional attire demonstrate and teach
dances from the period. This candlelit setting, complete with traditional refreshments and
an interactive 19th-century craft, offers an enchanting and educational glimpse into
holiday celebrations of the past.

Suggested donation:
Holiday House Tours: $7.50 per person or $15 per family
Candlelight Tours: $10 per person or $20 per family

Metro's Fall Leaf Drop-Off now on-going through 12/7/24

Fall Leaves

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!

Never blow leaves into the street! If you see Street Sweeping signs posted on your street, please make sure to move your vehicle so any leaves that fell naturally on the street can be properly cleaned.

*ALSO: MSD asks if you see a catch basin covered with leaves, in front of your home or near by please collect them/clear the basin! That will assist in proper drainage and helps everyone.*

Leaf Drop-Off Sites (coming soon!)

The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites will be open Tuesday-Saturdays, now through December 7. Drop-off will not be available on November 28 and 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Louisvillians encouraged to support local businesses during the holiday season

PARC offering free on-street parking on Small Business Saturday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 25, 2024) – To promote holiday cheer and encourage everyone to shop small, the Parking Authority of River City (PARC) is gifting Louisville residents and guests with free on-street metered parking on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30.

“Louisville is full of wonderful small businesses that make this city unique and special,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg.  “I hope residents and visitors are able to take advantage of this gift to help shop local for gifts this holiday season.”

PARC operates meters in various locations, including downtown, NuLu, and along the Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue commercial corridors.

“Tis the season! Whether you are looking for a gift for a friend, family member, or yourself, PARC wants to make it easy for everyone to support our great locally owned shops, service providers, and restaurants,” said PARC Director Mike Tudor.

Rebecca Fleischaker, executive director of Louisville Downtown Partnership, emphasized that shopping at small businesses is a great way to give back to the community this holiday season. More than half of every dollar spent at a locally owned business stays in and recirculates throughout the community.

“Small Business Saturday is the kick-off to holiday shopping and provides the perfect opportunity to support our local businesses, especially in the greater Downtown area, and boost the local economy,” Fleischaker said. “Free parking is a simple but impactful way for all of us to give back and keep our Downtown vibrant.”

For those looking to make the most out of a single stop, Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will host its annual HoLOUdays! Events, starting with Small Business Saturday events in South and West Louisville.

LIBA will kick off the celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Small Business Saturday South Louisville at Colonial Gardens, 818 W. Kenwood Dr., and continue from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Small Business Saturday West Louisville at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, 3029 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. Both events will feature vendors from the surrounding neighborhoods, giveaways, and kids’ activities. More details and a local gift guide featuring Louisville small businesses are available at Keeplouisvilleweird.com.

“We are a city of neighborhoods, and Small Business Saturday gives us a special opportunity to check out and support our neighbors’ businesses,” said Jennifer Rubenstein, Executive Director of the Louisville Independent Business Alliance. “These are the businesses that give us our community character and sense of place, and they also keep more dollars close to home.”

And if you still have items on your list after Small Business Saturday, Louisville Downtown Partnership is hosting its annual Downtown Holiday Market on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is in collaboration with Louisville Metro’s annual Light Up Louisville and will transform the Plaza on Fourth, between Jefferson and Market Streets, with a unique outdoor, pop-up shopping and food vendor market in the heart of Louisville. This festive event offers a unique opportunity for the community to shop local, support small businesses, and enjoy the holiday spirit in a vibrant downtown setting.

Forming group wants to create Kentucky’s first “Cohousing” community in Louisville

cohousing

Louisville Cohousing and Louisville Metro Office of Planning are

hosting a Public Presentation to explain the concept.

Louisville, KY – November 19th, 2024 – A group of motivated Louisvillians are joining forces to create Louisville Cohousing, a custom pocket neighborhood where people know and care for each other. Their effort is supported by the non-profits Mattingly Edge and Inclusive Housing Solutions.

To spread the word and present their project, Louisville Cohousing, Mattingly Edge and the Louisville Metro Office of Planning will be hosting a public presentation at the Northeast Regional Library (15 Bellevoir Cir) on Thursday December 5th, 2024. Join us from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for an evening of learning and discussion about cohousing.

During this presentation, Metro office of planning will talk about Cohousing regulations in the land development code, and how it aligns with their effort to respond to the “need for quality housing with attainable price points”

Mathilde Berthe from Studio Co+Hab, an architecture firm specialized in cohousing projects, will then lead a 45-minute presentation on cohousing.

“Cohousing is a place where you don’t have to drive your kid to play dates, because they are happening right next door. And if you need something, you can count on your neighbor’s help.” Mathilde Berthe, Cohousing expert, said.

Cohousing: A Different Kind of Neighborhood

Cohousing is similar to a condominium neighborhood where residents own their own home, with their own mortgage. But Cohousing neighborhoods are designed for privacy AND community. In these neighborhoods, future residents make all the major decisions, ensuring that their collective vision shapes the environment they live in, and they create spaces where community can happen.

The communities have extensive common outdoor spaces where kids can run in a car-free environment and residents run into each other on a daily basis. The Common House is the heart of the community. This facility typically has a large dining room and kitchen, where people take turns cooking for each other. It usually has common guest rooms, a kids-room or even a common laundry room.

As future resident Leila Faucette said: “In cohousing you don’t have 32 households owning 32 lawn mowers, people pool resources to live lighter on the planet together.” It is a supportive community fostered around relationships and spontaneous interactions. Far from a gated community, cohousing projects benefit the wider neighborhood in which they are located by creating pedestrian friendly and human-scaled environments. “We are a group of strangers, who are getting to know each other by working together on creating our dream multi-generational Cohousing community”, Faucette said.

EVENT DETAILS:

Date: Thursday December 5th

Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Location: Northeast Regional Library

Admission: Free

Media is invited to attend the event. Representatives from Louisville Cohousing will be available for questions.
