Council Updates

Metro Council Business

This week, Councilwoman Parrish-Wright voted on appointments to boards and commissions (shout out to the District 3 appointment, Kevin Gibson!) and two budget items. One budget item related to a capital project in District 9, and the other budget item was for the District 24 office to transfer funds from their capital account to their neighborhood development account. On October 30th, the Public Safety Committee will be holding a special meeting to discuss the mask ban. Several constituents have reached out and expressed concerns regarding this ordinance.

District 3 SWAG!

You may have seen our office now has District 3 stickers and pins with our new logo! We are also going to have shirts, hoodies and bags coming soon. These are all free to D3 residents and we hope to see you soon to give you some D3 swag!

Continuing Projects

The grass at Schardein Cemetery has been cut, trash has been removed, and some trees were pruned! We are so thankful to Trees Louisville and the volunteers at Planet Fitness for spending their day giving Schardein some much needed TLC. We have another special section on Schardein Cemetery below--we are thankful to the UofL Anthropology department for sharing some records!

We spoke via phone to a public works representative regarding the fence on Manslick Road. He said the next step is to work with purchasing to determine if there is an existing contract with a fencing contractor so we can request an estimate for a replacement fence. While we are encouraged by this development, we will be happier when we have an agreement in writing. However, prior to any action, we will be asking those whose property directly abuts the fence what they want.

D3 Upcoming Meetings & Survey Data

We are so excited for our several upcoming events! The first is our Good Neighbor Awards! They will be November 9th from 1pm-3pm at 2304 Crums Lane (St. Paul Evangel Lutheran Church). We will be celebrating all those community members who are good neighbors. TODAY is the last day to nominate yourself or someone else HERE! . We have confirmed our  Landlord/Renter Solutions Forum for November 23rd from 1pm-3pm at the South Louisville Community Center. Our office routinely gets calls from both tenants and landlords, and we want to help bridge the gap and promote open communication.

Also, please don't forget our SOCCER TOURNAMENT TOMORROW! Details below!

Community Corner-From our Community Engagement Strategist

Hill Street Baptist church Fall festival was good, lots of vendors, food and fun for the kids!

District Advisory Board meeting was held on Tuesday instead of a Monday at the Knights of St. John. We talked about community safety as well as upcoming events for district 3.

Schardein cemetery cleanup was good. Over 30 volunteers showed up to work. It was cold but we got a lot accomplished thanks to Trees Louisville and Planet Fitness!

Delivered Speed bump surveys to a few constituents who inquired about safer streets in their neighborhoods.

Shively City Council meeting discussed public works issues in the city as well as constituent concerns.

St. Denis AVC meeting discussed more plans for the next round of funding.

Schardein Cemetery Update

family schardein

We are so thankful to Trees Louisville and their volunteers with Planet Fitness for helping mow and clean up Schardein Cemetery. We have reached out to the Anthropology Department at the University of Louisville for more information regarding the people buried there and the history of the plot of land. It was originally for the Schardein family (as shown above), and was started in about 1860! If you suspect you may have relative buried at Schardein, please reach out to ceminfo@louisville.edu, and a University of Louisville representative will be able to help you!

We also want to extend a special thanks to former Councilman Brandon Coan for his assistance facilitating the connection between our office and the Planet Fitness volunteers. We look forward to continuing to work with former Councilman Coan and the University of Louisville for initiatives to help our seniors age in place, and to protect and preserve housing in our community.

Budget-Friendly Superfoods to Boost Your Diet

Most people might have the idea that eating healthy can be expensive, but it is possible to do it without breaking the bank. From fruits and vegetables to pantry staples, there are a wide variety of value-friendly nutrients. Check out the list below for some superfood ideas that can easily fit into any meal plan and budget!

  • Beans (canned or dry): These protein-packed powerhouses are full of antioxidants, fiber, and essential minerals. Along with their many uses, beans provide a satisfying fullness and can be tossed into soups, tacos, stir-fries, and more.
  • Frozen and canned produce: Fruits and vegetables are often less expensive when purchased as frozen or canned goods while still carrying similar benefits. For canned items, look for foods that have been packed in water (as opposed to syrup) and be sure to rinse them prior to use to avoid added salt.
  • Oats: Old-fashioned oats are a pantry essential and can provide a healthy source of protein and fiber. Look to pair this with nuts, berries, honey, and the like to build a filling breakfast bowl. Alternatively, oats can be ground up and used as a flour-substitute.
  • Eggs: This low-cost food staple is nutrient-dense and packed with protein, healthy fats, and vitamins like B12 and D. They demonstrate incredibly versatility from the breakfast plate to dinner options like stir-fry.
  • Sweet potatoes: Full of beta-carotene, a vitamin that supports vision and immune health, sweet potatoes are a fantastic source for carbohydrates. Pair them as an addition to any meal. For a quick prep option, slice them up and toss them in a bit of oil and spices to bake.

The next time you are set for a grocery run, think to look for a few of these items to add to some affordable nutrients to your diet. For more information and a greater selection for food options, check out the resources below!
