Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! It looks like we have a beautiful weekend coming up. Whether it's a Friday night football game, a hike through the trails at Tom Sawyer State Park, or just hanging out by the fire pit with neighbors, I hope you get a chance to enjoy it.

I wanted to first share an update on the 'Another Way' program I've talked about previously. As you may recall, this program involves Goodwill staff driving to various parts of the city to interact with those panhandling, standing along roadways, etc. They offer people a chance to work (one day last month, participants picked up 123 bags of trash!), a hot meal, and an opportunity to get connected to resources they might need. Last month alone, Goodwill helped 137 new participants, 94% of whom were connected to resources. What does that look like?

  • 25 were moved to full-time employment
  • 16 received IDs
  • 27 were placed in temporary or permanent housing
  • 33 were transported to treatment

I know we have more work to do on this issue, but I'm proud of the results we've seen to this point and grateful for the work done by those at Goodwill.

On another note, we have a new commander over LMPD's 8th Division. (Let me pause here to say how much I appreciate Major Wampler's efforts while leading our division. He was always very responsive, and I wish him well in his new role with LMPD.) Major Tiffany Tatum comes to us from the 4th Division where she was also the commander. I believe she's going to be able to attend our coffee meeting at the end of the month and will share those details once they are confirmed. I hope you'll be able to join us!

I hope you have a great weekend. Please don't hesitate to reach out if my office can help you in any way.

Code Enforcement Matters - October 16

Code Enforcement

I wanted to remind everyone about a meeting scheduled next week in partnership with Metro Codes and Regulations. This meeting, called 'Code Enforcement Matters,' is a chance for you to meet a supervisor from Codes and Regulations in person, learn about code enforcement specifically, and ask any questions you might have. The meeting will be at the Berrytown Recreation Center on Wednesday, October 16 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. My office routinely gets questions related to code enforcement, so I think this will prove to be a worthwhile event. I hope you can make it!

District 17 Cleanup - Saturday, October 19

Brightside's fall community-wide cleanup will be held a week from tomorrow, and District 17 will be participating! For those interested in volunteering, please join us in front of Malcolm Chancey Elementary School (4301 Murphy Lane) on Saturday, October 19 at 9 a.m. to pick up litter along Murphy Lane. I'll have trash bags, gloves, grabbers, t-shirts, and maybe even some doughnuts for those in attendance! If you can't make it that morning or you want to focus on your own neighborhood, that's great, too. You can register here to get the necessary items from Brightside for your own cleanup. Either way, I hope you'll be able to join others throughout Louisville that weekend making our city a little bit cleaner.

Pop-Up Drop-Off Next Saturday

pop up

This month's Pop-Up Drop-Off will be Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at UofL's Shelby Campus, 440 N. Whittington Parkway. As you likely know by now, these events are great opportunities to properly dispose of mattresses, electronics, prescription medications, personal documents, and much more. Click here for more information including some helpful tips before you go. Next month's event at Shawnee Park will be the last one of the year, so don't miss out!

Tree Week 2024

Tree Week

Tree Week 2024 is a (roughly) week-long celebration of trees starting tomorrow in locations throughout Louisville. Citizens will have the opportunity to plant trees and perform tree-related maintenance projects, join in guided hikes and educational talks, participate in family-friendly arts and crafts, and much more. More details on all the events offered can be found here

Metro government is one of the 30 or so organizations participating. Our Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division will be giving away 500 three-gallon container trees to Jefferson County residents (limit of three per household). The giveaway will be Friday, October 18 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Joe Creason Park in the parking lot off Sheridan Avenue. Species available include Kentucky coffeetree, tulip poplar, American hornbeam, blackgum, pawpaw, and spicebush. I hope you'll be able to participate in some way!
