City-wide Anti-Racism Challenge coming October 4th

As we go into this election season, unity for our country and community is foremost in our minds. To move our country forward, we must keep working to achieve equity for all. This requires ongoing engagement with issues of justice. That’s what the recurring Anti-Racism Challenge is all about: staying aware of the racism that still plagues us and proactively working to change it.  We want this city-wide Challenge to reach every corner of Louisville.

The ARC is sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro’s Office of Equity, and the Earth and Spirit Center and begins on October 4th.  Here is the link to sign up:  https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sl/RYVOcxz

This Saturday, October 5, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Southwest Regional Library

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 1, 2024) –  Get out your party hats, because October 5 marks ten years since the Southwest Regional Library, located at 9725 Dixie Highway, first opened its doors. The Library is celebrating this milestone with a birthday party and the entire city is invited.

Drop in any time, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., this Saturday, October 5, for family-friendly crafts, activities, book giveaways, and a book sale benefiting the Friends of Southwest Regional Library. Festivities also include special performances throughout the day, including:

·        Mr. Moustache’s comedic magic show (11 a.m. – 12 p.m.)

·        Hands-on fun with the Bubble Truck (2 – 4 p.m.)

·        Live bluegrass music from Hog Operation (2 – 3 p.m.), sponsored by a Community Music Partnership grant and Metro Councilwoman Cindi Fowler

Since opening day on October 5, 2014, more than 1.75 million people have visited the award-winning Southwest Regional Library. The 40,000 square foot facility was the first of three regional libraries to be built as part of the Louisville Free Public Library’s 2008 Master Facilities Plan, and set the standard for the South Central and Northeast regional libraries, opened in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Due to the building’s eco-friendly features and design, including geothermal heating & cooling, energy efficient windows and fixtures, and daylight harvest interior lighting, Southwest Regional Library was awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification in 2015. When the Library opened, it more than doubled the amount of books and materials available in the Southwest region of Louisville.

The Cub Needs a Name! Louisville Zoo Invites Public to Name New Tiger Cub

Voting is presented by Norton Children’s | Photos attached and video Broll here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNppj1rG3pc

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 23, 2024) – The Louisville Zoo is inviting the public to help name one of its newest additions, a male Sumatran tiger cub born on July 23, 2024. Norton Children’s is presenting the opportunity to vote on the cub’s name, marking the first time a Sumatran tiger cub has been born at the Zoo in 20 years.

The zookeepers at the Islands have selected three potential names that reflect the importance of this cub and honor his parents:

  • Satu (sah-too): Means “one” in Indonesian. With less than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, every cub is vital for the survival of this critically endangered species.
  • Saya Sambal (Sigh-ya-sah-m-ball): Honors his dad, Kami Sambal, who passed away on August 20, 2024.  Kami’s name means “we are spicy sauce” in Indonesian, referring to the wild nature of tigers, which are not domesticated and are often trafficked for the pet trade, leading to significant conservation issues.  “Saya Sambal” means “I am spicy sauce.”
  • Kaji (kah-gee): A combination of both parents’ names, Kami and Jingga. Their legacy will live on through this cub, contributing to the conservation of Sumatran tigers for future generations.

Voting begins today and continues through Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 11 p.m. Guests can cast their votes once daily at

louisvillezoo.org/namethetigercub.

The mother and cub are currently off exhibit, bonding. Guests can check in on them via the Zoo’s live cam at louisvillezoo.org/cubcam.

About Sumatran Tigers

Sumatran Tigers, the last of the island tiger subspecies, are smaller than mainland tigers and are critically endangered. Fewer than 400 individuals are estimated to still survive in the wild.  Found only on Sumatra, their habitat is primarily threatened by the development of palm oil plantations. Palm oil is found in hundreds of foods, cosmetics and cleaning products. As worldwide demand for palm oil accelerates, so does the loss of vital tropical forests, which are home to thousands of unique plant and animal species. Choosing palm-oil free products or those containing sustainably grown palm oil helps preserve and protect wildlife and wild places.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (guests can stay until 6 p.m.) through Sept. 22, 2024. From Sept. 23, 2024 – March 14, 2025, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.

Ageism Awareness Day

Ageism Awareness Day

October 9th, 2024

Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others or ourselves based on age. It negatively impacts our health and well-being, our financial security, and the economy. It exists in many forms, influencing everything from personal interactions to public policy, and impacts us at every age.

The good news is that we can do something about it, and we begin by spreading the word on Ageism Awareness Day Oct. 9, 2024.

How to Get Involved:

  1. Spread Awareness
  2. Share Facts about Ageism
  3. Share Stories
  4. Reach out to Local Media
  5. Volunteer
  6. Lead Discussion groups

Call for Volunteers for 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

It's that time of year again to prepare for Louisville's third annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, November 17. World Day of Remembrance is a global event held every third Sunday in November to honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by roadway crashes. The day also serves as a crucial opportunity to demonstrate the scale and impact of road-related deaths and injuries and advocate for change.

We need volunteers to help with planning the event, including securing the venue and speakers, as well as day-of support, including set-up and tear-down.

Work continues on the rigid frames for the new addition. Columns in the construction zone are in place.

Help APH Test a New Accessible Font!

APH is working with a design firm to create a more accessible font, and we need your help to test it! Please use the link below to take a short, five minute survey. Your feedback will help us refine the font to ensure it is easy to read for the widest audience possible. Take the font survey.

A couple of important notes:

  • We are looking for survey takers who use their eyes in any capacity to read text on screens.
  • To control variables in the testing environment, the survey must be completed on a desktop or laptop.

The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, October 11. Thank you for helping us create a more accessible reading experience for all!
