IT IS THAT TIME OF THE YEAR TO TALK ABOUT TRAIN TRACK SAFETY AND OTHER FUN ALTERNATIVES THIS FALL SEASON!

train

Train Safety Awareness

District 20 is the largest district in Louisville Metro. The district includes portions of Jeffersontown, Fisherville, Middletown and the Parklands and it also has many miles of railroad track running throughout our parks, along waterways, near neighborhoods and even our schools.
Just as trains are part of our everyday life, it is important that we take time to also remember the danger that they can pose to those who are near them.

From Operation Lifesaver - Rail Safety Education
Rail safety is for everyone, not just drivers. Pedestrians who choose to walk or play around railroad tracks are trespassing on private property and could be fined, seriously injured or killed.

Safety tips:
The only safe place to cross is at a designated public crossing with either a crossbuck, flashing red lights or a gate. If you cross at any other place, you are trespassing and can be ticketed or fined. Cross tracks ONLY at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings.
Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and equipment are private property and trespassers are subject to arrest and fine. If you are in a rail yard uninvited by a railroad official you are trespassing and subject to criminal prosecution; you could be injured or killed in a busy rail yard.
It can take a mile or more to stop a train, so a locomotive engineer who suddenly sees someone on the tracks will likely be unable to stop in time. Railroad property is private property. For your safety, it is illegal to be there unless you are at a designated public crossing.
Trains overhang the tracks by at least three feet in both directions; loose straps hanging from rail cars may extend even further. If you are in the right-of-way next to the tracks, you can be hit by the train.
Do not cross the tracks immediately after a train passes. A second train might be blocked by the first. Trains can come from either direction. Wait until you can see clearly around the first train in both directions.
Flashing red lights indicate a train is approaching from either direction. You can be fined for failure to obey these signals. Never walk around or behind lowered gates at a crossing, and DO NOT cross the tracks until the lights have stopped flashing and it's safe to do so.
Do not hunt, fish or bungee jump from railroad trestles. There is only enough clearance on the tracks for a train to pass. Trestles are not meant to be sidewalks or pedestrian bridges! Never walk, run, cycle or operate all terrain vehicles (ATVs) on railroad tracks, rights-of-way or through tunnels.
Do not attempt to hop aboard railroad equipment at any time. A slip of the foot can cost you a limb or your life.
Be aware trains do not follow set schedules. Any Time is Train Time!

Hunting Regulations

We receive a myriad of questions this time of the year, so we have decided to share information regarding hunting regulations in Kentucky.

LANDOWNER PERMISSION
A person shall not enter upon the lands of another to shoot, hunt, trap, fish or for other wildlife-related recreational purposes without the oral or written permission of the landowner, tenant, or person who has authority to grant permission. Those who fail to obtain permission are subject to arrest and prosecution. Railroad tracks and rights of way are privately owned property, and permission to hunt, trap, or fish must be obtained prior to entry. Landowners are under no obligation to allow hunters to retrieve game or hunting dogs from their property. If someone is trespassing on a property to hunt without permission you may call the game warden to investigate.

Primary Game Warden
In case of emergencies, dial 911. To request an officer at a specific location, contact your county's KY State Police Post (KSP), to dispatch the appropriate officer. For enforcement inquiries, email the Primary Game Warden.

The Cub Needs a Name! - Louisville Zoo Invites Public to Name New Tiger Cub

Voting is presented by Norton Children’s

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 23, 2024) – The Louisville Zoo is inviting the public to help name one of its newest additions, a male Sumatran tiger cub born on July 23, 2024. Norton Children’s is presenting the opportunity to vote on the cub’s name, marking the first time a Sumatran tiger cub has been born at the Zoo in 20 years.

The zookeepers at the Islands have selected three potential names that reflect the importance of this cub and honor his parents:

  • Satu (sah-too): Means “one” in Indonesian. With less than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, every cub is vital for the survival of this critically endangered species.
  • Saya Sambal (Sigh-ya-sah-m-ball): Honors his dad, Kami Sambal, who passed away on August 20, 2024.  Kami’s name means “we are spicy sauce” in Indonesian, referring to the wild nature of tigers, which are not domesticated and are often trafficked for the pet trade, leading to significant conservation issues.  “Saya Sambal” means “I am spicy sauce.”
  • Kaji (kah-gee): A combination of both parents’ names, Kami and Jingga. Their legacy will live on through this cub, contributing to the conservation of Sumatran tigers for future generations.

Voting begins today and continues through Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 11 p.m. Guests can cast their votes once daily at

louisvillezoo.org/namethetigercub.

The mother and cub are currently off exhibit, bonding. Guests can check in on them via the Zoo’s live cam at louisvillezoo.org/cubcam.

About Sumatran Tigers

Sumatran Tigers, the last of the island tiger subspecies, are smaller than mainland tigers and are critically endangered. Fewer than 400 individuals are estimated to still survive in the wild.  Found only on Sumatra, their habitat is primarily threatened by the development of palm oil plantations. Palm oil is found in hundreds of foods, cosmetics and cleaning products. As worldwide demand for palm oil accelerates, so does the loss of vital tropical forests, which are home to thousands of unique plant and animal species. Choosing palm-oil free products or those containing sustainably grown palm oil helps preserve and protect wildlife and wild places.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (guests can stay until 6 p.m.) through Sept. 22, 2024. From Sept. 23, 2024 – March 14, 2025, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.

Abeo and Foster Mom Kweli Now on Exhibit at Louisville Zoo’s Award-Winning Gorilla Forest

Photos attached

Video Broll: https://youtu.be/4jUBQx35xvc

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 25, 2024) – Visitors to the Louisville Zoo can now see infant gorilla Abeo (pronounced ah-BAY-oh) as he makes his debut in the Zoo’s award-winning Gorilla Forest. Abeo, a 1 ½-month-old male Western Lowland gorilla, is being fostered by Kweli, a 40-year-old female gorilla. The two are now part of the daily viewing rotation for guests.

Abeo was born on June 28 at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, to first-time mom Akenji. Unfortunately, Akenji was unable to bond with her newborn, and a subsequent foster arrangement was also unsuccessful. In response, Woodland Park Zoo officials worked swiftly with the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), a cooperative breeding program managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), to secure a new home for Abeo. The Louisville Zoo’s Kweli was selected due to her successful experience fostering Kindi, the Zoo’s now 8-year-old sub-adult female gorilla, who was orphaned shortly after birth.

“Kweli has been an exemplary foster mom, first with Kindi and now with Abeo,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “We are incredibly proud of Kweli’s care and her attentiveness. Like our visitors, we are looking forward to watching Abeo grow and thrive with the family troop at Gorilla Forest.”

“All of us at Woodland Park Zoo are celebrating that baby Abeo is now in the arms of gorilla Kweli. This is how it should be for a baby gorilla—being in the direct care of a gorilla and being socialized with a family of gorillas,” said Martin Ramirez, Interim Senior Director of Animal Care at Woodland Park Zoo. “Our zoo family is so grateful to Louisville Zoo and their dedicated gorilla experts. All the way from the Pacific Northwest, our zoo family and community will continue to enjoy watching Abeo grow to be a confident and secure gorilla.”

For over a month, the Gorilla Forest team has provided round-the-clock care for Abeo, including feeding and socializing him using vocal and behavioral cues similar to those of a gorilla mother. After meeting key milestones, including responding to behavioral cues and navigating the habitat, Abeo was introduced to Kweli through closely monitored bonding. Over the coming weeks, Abeo and Kweli will be integrated with the rest of the gorilla troop that includes silverback Casey (42 years old), and adult females Paki (35 years old) and Patty (11 years old), and sub-adult female Kindi (8 years old). The group will rotate on exhibit with bachelor gorillas Bengati, Jelani, Cecil and Kicho.

For updates on Abeo’s progress, visit the Zoo’s dedicated blog at louisvillezoo.org/gorillafoster.

Gorilla Conservation Status

Found only in the dense forests of west central Africa, Western Lowland gorillas are critically endangered and could face extinction if stronger efforts are not mounted to protect them. The primary threats to their survival are illegal poaching, civil unrest, disease and habitat destruction due to extractive industries such as mining.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Current hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (stay until 5 p.m.). The Zoo is open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.
