LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 18, 2024) – Meet Nyasi (nee-YAH-see)!
Nyasi means “grass” in Swahili language. Giraffe inhabit the tall savanna grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa.
The Louisville Zoo asked fans and advocates to participate in naming its male giraffe calf, and the people have spoken. Neary 4,000 votes were cast from individuals throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana as well as 38 states plus the district of Columbia during a two-week voting period, with Nyasi emerging as the favorite by an 8-vote margin. This name was selected from three options that reflected both the calf’s spirited personality and the native habitats of Masai giraffes.
The Zoo welcomed Nyasi into the family on August 9, 2024. He is the offspring of doting mother, 7-year-old, Kianga, and towering father, 8-year-old Baridi.
The giraffe family can be seen daily in the giraffe yard. Guests can also watch the trio bond behind-the-scenes on the Zoo’s giraffe camera at louisvillezoo.org/giraffecam.
About Masai Giraffes
Masai giraffes, native to East Africa, are the largest subspecies of giraffe. They are distinguished by their irregular, star-shaped spots which are like a fingerprint and unique to each individual animal. The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species categorizes giraffes as vulnerable. Masai giraffe populations have declined by more than 50 percent in last 30 years due to habitat loss and poaching. The Louisville Zoo is committed to the conservation of this essential, iconic species through education, breeding programs, and support of preservation efforts in the wild.
Zoo Hours
The Zoo is open daily year-round. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (guests can stay until 6 p.m.) through Sept. 22, 2024. From Sept. 23, 2024 – March 14, 2025, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.

The Louisville Audubon Society asks for your help in protecting birds during peak Fall migration – September to the end of October – simply by turning off all non-essential lights from 11:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Because most birds migrate at night, orienting themselves in darkness to navigate by the moon and stars, bright lights from city glow attracts and disorients them and increases their vulnerability to collisions with buildings or exposure to additional daytime hazards later. An estimated 1 billion birds die annually from building collisions. You can help dramatically reduce the hazards from light pollution for nocturnally migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lighting. To learn more visit lightsoutlouisville.org.

The recycling drop-off dumpster located at the Firehouse at 3226 River Park Dr. will be permanently removed on Friday, September 27. Unfortunately, the dumpster is regularly contaminated with illegally dumped material and any efforts toward recycling are being wasted.
Residents who would like to recycle can find another convenient drop-off location on our Recycle Map. Residents who have city waste collection services at their home may also request their first recycling cart for free.
Please follow these tips and suggestions to use the other recycling drop-off locations correctly and ensure that the material can be recycled:
- Bring your recyclables in a container that you find easiest to empty into the slot. This might take trial and error to find what works best for you.
- Remove packaging materials from cardboard boxes before arriving at the drop-off location. Styrofoam inserts and plastic bags and wrap are not accepted - so these items should not be left inside a box or put into the dumpster.
- Flatten, fold, or cut cardboard boxes before arriving at the drop-off location.
- Take photos of the dumpster signs to use as a reminder of what to collect in your recycling container at home.

The next Pop-Up Drop-Off event will be at Sun Valley Park and Ashby Lane Baptist Church.
Enter the church parking lot at 6617 Ashby Ln to drop off shoes, prescription medication, electronics, or to have documents shredded. Enter at Lower River Rd to drop off metal items, tires, yard waste, household recycling, or large items.
The event starts at 10 a.m. Please do not arrive early! There will be no room for vehicles to wait at the church. You will be asked to leave and to come back at 10 a.m. or later. There will be room for a line at the park when the gate is unlocked. The event ends promptly at 2 p.m. If you have any questions about these events, contact the kNOw Waste Education Department!

Louisville Parks and Recreation is investing $349,237 into Seneca Park this fall to upgrade the current play area. The demolition of the playground currently located in Seneca Park is set to begin today, with construction on a new, ADA accessible playground beginning immediately after.
The new play area will feature poured-in-place surfacing, a companion swing, and other equipment children with all abilities can easily maneuver independently.
Midstates Recreation was awarded the contract to complete construction. The public is asked to avoid the construction zone as the new playground is being built, though no other areas of the park will be affected by the project.
Construction on the ADA accessible play area is expected to be complete in two weeks.

High quality public transit is crucial to Louisville's vision of zero roadway deaths by 2050. By offering service that is frequent, reliable, and accessible, transit can reduce car trips and spur demand for walking and cycling.
TARC 2025: Moving Forward Together is an important opportunity to redesign Louisville's transit network to update and innovate service to better match the current and future needs of the Louisville region.

When the Recycle Right team doesn't have a recycling route to inspect, they are leaving educational material on garbage carts. Be cart smart! We have found that providing this information to residents decreases the number of carts left out after collection.
Remember to pull your carts back onto your property by 4 p.m. the day after collection. This helps prevent them from being damaged or stolen!
Want to keep the kiddos busy over their fall break? Check out our fall break day camps that take place from September 30 - October 4. A field trip is included!

Originally built in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse, the house was transformed in 1909 into the iconic Classical style mansion we know today that epitomizes the stately beauty of early twentieth-century architecture. At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s grounds offer the public multiple special gardens that are a horticultural treasure to the community.

As we go into this election season, unity for our country and community is foremost in our minds. To move our country forward, we must keep working to achieve equity for all. This requires ongoing engagement with issues of justice. That’s what the recurring Anti-Racism Challenge is all about: staying aware of the racism that still plagues us and proactively working to change it. We want this city-wide Challenge to reach every corner of Louisville.
The ARC is sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro’s Office of Equity, and the Earth and Spirit Center and begins on October 4th. Here is the link to sign up: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sl/RYVOcxz

It's that time of year again to prepare for Louisville's third annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, November 17. World Day of Remembrance is a global event held every third Sunday in November to honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by roadway crashes. The day also serves as a crucial opportunity to demonstrate the scale and impact of road-related deaths and injuries and advocate for change.
We need volunteers to help with planning the event, including securing the venue and speakers, as well as day-of support, including set-up and tear-down.

We appreciate the publics patience with this project but still want to stress that the speed limit is still 25mph through the site and that several areas are closed off along the route for the safety of our workers as well as the safety of the general public. We have numerous bike riders crossing closed roads and riding along the closed lane."
