Little Libraries in District 14

At the Fowler Forum this week, Councilwoman Cindi Fowler announced a new reading initiative for District 14 residents.
Little Libraries, also known as “community book exchanges”, are small boxes or structures where people can freely take or leave books. These mini libraries are a popular way to share and recycle books within the community.
The District 14 office has purchased thirty Little Library kits, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the requested location. The kits include everything needed for assembly and installation, with instructions provided. The libraries must be installed on private property but made available for public use, such as in a front yard.
If you’re interested in receiving a free kit, please contact the District 14 office with the address where you’d like to install it. The goal is to have these libraries throughout District 14. If approved, we will deliver the kit to you. This opportunity is available to any District 14 resident.
To request a free Little Library kit, please contact Councilwoman Fowler’s office at 574-1114, or email Amy.Stewart@louisvilleky.gov.

Louisville Zoo Welcomes Infant Gorilla for Fostering
The Louisville Zoo has welcomed a 1 ½-month-old infant male western lowland gorilla named Abeo (ah-bay-OH) to our award-winning Gorilla Forest habitat. His name means “bringer of happiness” in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa. Born on June 28 at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington., the infant is the offspring of Akenji, a first-time mom. When Akenji was unable to bond with her infant and when training another foster didn’t progress fast enough, Woodland Park officials moved into quick action to find suitable care for the infant gorilla.
Woodland Park Zoo collaborated with the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP) to secure a new home. The SSP, a cooperative breeding program managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) aims to ensure a healthy, self-sustaining population of gorillas. The program maintains a list of potential foster gorillas across the country.
The Louisville Zoo’s 40-year-old female gorilla, Kweli, was selected to be the baby’s foster mom due to her success with Kindi – our now 8-year-old, sub-adult female gorilla. Kindi was orphaned after her mother, Mia Mojo, died the day after giving birth.

How Can You Help with Illegal Dumping
Illegally dumped trash is more than just an eyesore! It is expensive to clean up, it negatively impacts our quality of life and economic development, and the plastic debris may end up in our waterways and oceans. Individuals caught dumping illegally may have their vehicle impounded and face fines and fees totaling about $1,000. We have recently posted images on social media asking for help identifying illegal dumpers caught on camera and reporting when a vehicle was impounded. WDRB also helped spread the word about the negative impacts of illegal dumping. View their story here. Residents are encouraged to fill out this online form if they witness illegal dumping. The form can also be used to share home security camera footage or images of illegal dumping occurring with our Solid Waste Enforcement Department. Go to Louisvilleky.gov/IllegalDumping to learn more about how you can help prevent illegal dumping. Did you know..? Many waste materials can be dropped off legally and for FREE.
