Community Ministries Day is Thursday, Sept. 5, 4:00 - 6:00pm as they prepare for the big TogetherFest celebration at the Ice House on September 8th.  Each of the 13 Community Ministries will be opening their doors for a food drive to help stock their pantries on behalf of our neighbors in need! Urban Canoe Adventure at Riverview Park: 9/21 & 9/22

This free event is designed for individuals and families who are new to canoeing to experience the water in safe and stable big canoes which hold 6 people! All safety equipment and trained staff are provided. Wear comfortable outdoor clothing that can get wet; no flip flops please. 

Ages: 3 and up. Participants under the age of 18 MUST have a waiver signed by a parent/legal guardian.

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, presented by Thorntons, is celebrating its 12^th year from October 1 - November 2 at Iroquois Park. This year’s theme is “Trivia Night: Pumpkin Edition,” and will test guest’s knowledge as they meander through the woods, lined with thousands of artistically carved and locally sourced pumpkins. Guests will be quizzed on art history, music, folklore, and more. They can challenge their friends and family while experiencing the magic that is Jack O’Lantern Spectacular.

• The event runs from Tuesday, October 1 through Saturday, November 2.
• The event will be open from dusk-10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from dusk to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Metro Council Committee Summary

This week Metro Council committees met and adopted several resolutions and ordinances as well as hosted discussions with the Louisville Metro Housing Authority and Libraries. 

The Planning & Zoning Committee approved three changes to zonings on Six Mile Lane, Preston Highway, and Watson Lane. 

The Labor, Economic Development & Appropriations Committee approved several council district appropriations and infrastructure ordinances. 

The Public Works Committee adopted an ordinance amending the Interlocal Cooperation Agreement between MSD, Oldham County, and the LaGrange Utilities Commission. 

The Government Oversight/Audit & Appointments Committee approved appointees to the Board of Health, Ethics Commission, Louisville Metro Housing Authority, KentuckianaWorks, Downtown Management District, MSD, Okolona Fire Protection, Police Merit, and Waterfront Development Boards.  The committee also approved a participation agreement with the new Kentucky Ohio River Regional Recreation Authority. 

The Community Affairs and Equity Committee adopted a contract for equity procurement and accepted state funding for court designated workers.  It was also given an update by the Louisville Metro Housing Authority on relocation efforts for Dosker Manor residents. 

The Public Safety Committee approved contracts for forensic testing and EMS respiratory care along with a resolution receiving state reimbursement for equipment used in virtual court proceedings. 

The Parks and Sustainability Committee approved an ordinance for enforcing licensing requirements on local farmers and a resolution declaring three surplus parcels for Waterfront Park’s Phase IV extension. 

The Budget Committee adopted ordinances setting the property tax rates for Jefferson County and the Urban Service District, approved a budget transfer for District #4, and a Capital Budget amendment for the cardiac monitor and defibrillator project. 

Metro Council meets again on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 6:00pm.

September marks National Preparedness Month, the annual campaign to remind residents that preparing for emergencies and disasters can keep them, their families, and their communities safe.

By taking simple steps, like starting a conversation, residents can build their preparedness at their own pace:

• Set aside a time when everyone is calm and relaxed.
• It may help to hold the discussions over a set time period, so decisions aren’t rushed, and people feel more comfortable talking about the topic.
• Talk about steps taken to prepare and encourage others to ask questions about preparedness actions that might work for them.

Make a plan

• Whether it’s at home or work, develop an emergency plan involving each person so you’ll know how and where to meet, how to contact each other and what to do in different situations, and include instructions on how to safely turn off electricity, gas and water.

Stock up on emergency items

• Gather enough essentials for at least 72 hours and include items such as necessary medicines, water, nonperishable food, a manual can opener, a flashlight, first aid items, spare clothing, phone chargers, battery-operated radio and extra batteries.

Make a kit now — before an emergency

• Store stock-piled emergency supplies in one location, preferably in air-tight storage. Evacuations may happen at a moment’s notice, so it’s important to have all items prepared. Make sure each member of the household or work location knows where the emergency preparedness kit will be stored.

Take your emergency planning on the go

• Whether short- or long-distance traveling, it’s always a good idea to make a similar preparedness kit to store in a vehicle. Include items like jumper cables, flashlights, extra batteries, first aid items, necessary medicines, nonperishable food, water, battery-operated radio, cell phone chargers, ice scraper, spare clothing, flares and blankets.

Stay informed

• Residents can stay informed of emergency situations in their area by signing up for LENSAlert, the Louisville Emergency Notification System. Residents can also create a safety profile through Smart911 to make first responders aware of important information that can help Police, Fire and EMS respond quickly in an emergency.

Emergency Services, along with other agencies, will partner with the Louisville Free Public Library to offer Emergency Preparedness Week, a week of educational workshops to teach residents how to prepare, protect, and recover from unexpected emergencies. Workshops will be held Monday, September 9 – Saturday, September 14 at the Bon Air Library, 2816 Del Rio Place, (502) 574-1795.

The Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence Among Adolescents (SPAVA), in partnership with Norton Children's Prevention & Wellness. Is seeking applications for its Peacemaker Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit compassion and promote peacemaking in their school and community.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students in grade 12 in the following counties:

Kentucky - Jefferson

Indiana - Clark, Floyd, Jefferson and Scott

The criteria for application are as followed:

- Essay describing your qualifications

- Two letters of recommendation

- Proof of a minimum 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. (C Average)
