HOMELESS & CRISIS SHELTERS: COMMUNITY LISTENING SESSIONS

The Coalition for the Homeless estimates that nearly 1,600 Louisvillians are experiencing homelessness on any given night, but the city only has 1,000 emergency overnight and transitional shelter beds, leaving 500 to 600 people without a place to stay each night. The Office of Planning has been tasked by the Louisville Metro Council to review and consider changes to the Land Development Code to expand access to homeless shelters and create options for temporary crisis shelters.

The Office of Planning invites you to attend an upcoming listening session to provide your feedback and solutions to increase shelter access to all community members in need.

Community Ministries Day, Thursday, September 5

Community Ministries Day is Thursday, Sept. 5, 4:00 - 6:00pm as they prepare for the big TogetherFest celebration at the Ice House on September 8th.  Each of the 13 Community Ministries will be opening their doors for a food drive to help stock their pantries on behalf of our neighbors in need! Committee Summary

Last week Metro Council committees met and adopted several resolutions and ordinances.  They also held discussions with Metro’s Solid Waste Management Services, the Kentucky and Louisville Non-profit Networks, and Louisville’s Resource Recovery Network.

The Planning & Zoning Committee approved two changes to zonings along Bells Lane and John Hicks Way, closed a couple of unimproved rights-of-way off Cooper Chapel Church Drive and Missy Lane, and denied a change in zoning on West Pages Lane.  The committee also adopted new land development code regulations on charitable gaming establishments, recommended updates to the NuLu Neighborhood Overlay District, and accepted $1 million for the brownfields revolving loan program.

The Labor, Economic Development & Appropriations Committee approved several council district appropriations and infrastructure ordinances as well as adopted two contracts for the Parking Authority of the River City.

The Public Works Committee was updated on Solid Waste Management Service efforts towards automated garbage routes and more frequent recycling. 

The Government Oversight/Audit & Appointments Committee approved appointees to the Bardstown Road Overlay District, Greater Louisville Lodging Management District, Planning Commission, Police Merit, TARC, and Waterworks Boards. 

The Community Affairs and Equity Committee adopted a resolution naming an honorary alley after Gary Allen, and heard testimony from groups associated with the Resource Recovery Network.

The Parks and Sustainability Committee approved a resolution for an internship program between the Louisville Zoo and Jefferson Community College.

The Budget Committee received a presentation from the Kentucky and Louisville Non-profit Networks, adopted an ordinance reallocating public art funding to Waterfront Park, and approved a resolution urging state adoption of Industrial Revenue Bonds for Goodwill Industries.

Metro Council meets again on Thursday, August 22, 2024, 6:00pm.
