Hello Neighbors & Friends,
Since 1985, thanks to our United States Congress, National Park and Recreation Month has been celebrated across the nation in July to recognize and applaud park and recreation professionals who support and promote vibrant and resilient parks and recreation facilities. Louisville Metro’s Parks and Recreation professionals and seasonal workers and volunteers are to be celebrated for their diligence in maintaining our city’s parks and offering essential programs and services for all ages in safe, accessible, and welcoming environments.
I hope you’ll consider visiting one of Louisville’s great parks this summer. Parks and our various recreation facilities are essential in maintaining our quality of life and vital to the economic viability and well-being of our city. Click here https://louisvilleky.gov/government/parks to find a park, volunteer, or learn about community centers, adaptive and inclusive recreation, sports, and other various program offerings.
If you see a Parks and Recreation employee, please thank them for their service and let them know how appreciative we are of their commitment to making our city a fun and vibrant place to live, work, play, and raise a family.
Keep up the great work, Parks and Recreation!

On Thursday, I attended the graduation and celebration of the Office for Women Ambassadors. These intelligent, inspiring, and ambitious women are trained, skilled, and ready to make a mark on society. Watch out, Louisville, they are fired up and eager to get started being ambassadors and advocates for the Louisville community and programs and initiatives that are near and dear to their hearts.
During the ceremony, a dozen of the graduates pitched ideas for programs, initiatives, and some life-saving measures that Louisville Metro can consider for the betterment of our community. Many of the ideas came with a request for funding. It will be exciting to watch these courageous women move in and out of various circles to introduce and implement their ideas and secure the funding they need. I am happy for them and eager to watch them spread their wings.
It was an absolute honor to be asked to assist with presenting the graduates with their certificates and extend a few ceremonial closing remarks. To view the video of their presentations and listen to my parting words. click here:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 9, 2024) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced further recognition of the commonwealth’s economic momentum as Kentucky and several of its communities have been highlighted by major economic development publications as national leaders for job growth and business development.
“Kentucky’s surging economy is a result of the efforts by each individual community, city, county and region working together for the immediate and long-term success of the commonwealth. That’s what Team Kentucky is all about,” said Gov. Beshear. “These rankings and recognitions are well-deserved and further establish our state as a prime location for companies to locate, expand and find success.”
Business Facilities magazine ranked Kentucky in the top 10 of three industry categories, including Food Processing, Automotive and EV Investment.
Kentucky is home to more than 430 food and beverage production facilities that employ over 58,000 people statewide. Since the start of the administration, the industry has seen over $6.3 billion in announced investments supporting nearly 7,000 new jobs.
Louisville’s ideal geographic location and infrastructure factored into its strong ranking in logistics, as well as the presence of the UPS Worldport and FedEx Ground hub. In late 2022, UPS announced a $155 million investment creating 315 well-paying jobs in Jefferson County to establish a new facility to boost the supply chain within the health care sector.
The robust job creation has been accompanied by rising wages across the commonwealth. The average incentivized hourly wage in 2022 and 2023 topped $26 in consecutive years for the first time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending everyone ages 6 months and older receive updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines to protect against these severe viruses this fall and winter.
Updated COVID-19 vaccines will be available from Moderna, Novavax, and Pfizer later this year. Receiving an updated COVID-19 vaccine can restore and enhance protection against virus variances and reduce the chance of suffering the effects of Long COVID, which can develop during or following acute infection and last for an extended duration.
Most people should get one dose of the flu vaccine each season, particularly during September and October, but there are additional considerations for specific groups, which you may ask your healthcare provider about.
Since the hotter weather could also lead to more mosquitos, here are some safety tips you can use to lower your risk of mosquito bites:
-
Drain: Water is breeding grounds for mosquitos, so make sure to empty and clean birdbaths, pet water dishes, and other containers each week, while keeping gutters and drains clear of debris to avoid standing water.
-
Defend: Use insect repellent products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and consider getting screens on windows or doors to keep mosquitos out of the house.
-
Dress: When you can, try wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks when outdoors, and choose lighter colors to make it harder for mosquitos to spot you.

On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.
Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)
The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.
On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
