This morning the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (APCD) recognized 22 local businesses as Air Quality Action Partners. Each followed through on voluntary commitments in 2023 to increase air quality awareness and improve air quality.
To be recognized as “Air Quality Action Partners” business and organizations must sign up to receive air quality alerts that are issued when poor air quality conditions are forecast, have a system to distribute those alerts to their employees, and make at least one additional commitment to improve air quality, like undertaking an energy efficiency project, installing idle-free signage, or purchasing lower-emission equipment.
Businesses permitted or registered by the APCD may complete even more impactful commitments to be recognized as Silver, Gold, or Platinum Level partners. After following through on their 2023 commitments, five businesses have been certified as Platinum Level partners, five as Gold, and 12 as Silver.
Since the program’s inception in 2021, emissions avoided due to actions from partners total at least 180 tons of nitrogen oxide, 6.3 tons of particle pollution, 6 tons of volatile organic compounds, and other hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs).
27 companies have already signed up for the program in 2024. Based on those commitments at least 7,000 local employees will receive air quality alerts when air quality is expected to be “unhealthy for sensitive groups” or worse on the Air Quality Index, allowing them to reduce exposure and their own impact on the air.
Businesses and other organizations are now encouraged to make their 2024 commitments by the end of May. More details and the sign-up form can be found on the APCD website.
