Hello Neighbors & Friends,
We had a nice turnout for Saturday’s Brightside neighborhood cleanup in District 7. Wonderful and energetic volunteers showed up one by one to care for our beautiful community. As volunteers arrived, they received a t-shirt, gloves, and a trash bag. After a visit by the police chief of the City of Northfield, who kindly offered the department's services if we needed them to pick up used needles or deal with something that requires their attention, and a few instructions by yours truly, we got right to work saving the environment.
During the cleanup, volunteers cleared mounds of trash accumulated over time in the bushes behind the McDonald’s restaurant on Brownsboro Road, across from Holiday Manor. Shoutout to the brave volunteers from All Peoples Church and members of the girls Cross Country team at Ballard High School. The cleanup could not have happened without them!
A steady stream of vehicles drove through the McDonald’s drive-through, but that did not distract us from cleaning up the many soft drink cups and straws, glass bottles, cans, and plastic objects. In addition to perishable and non-perishable items, volunteers threw away damaged clothes and children’s books left behind when police cleared a homeless encampment behind the brush several months ago.
The pictures below depict the labor of love shown for our neighborhood on Saturday. We stepped over a trench into puddles of water or mud and bent underneath tree branches and wild foliage to pick up litter and unsightly, dirty items. As you will also notice in the pictures, we filled approximately 19 trash bags. We could have filled 19 more trash bags but ran out of them. However, there was no shortage of garbage in the area.
Because there was much more litter than trash bags or manpower on Saturday, I hope we can get on the Public Works Clean Collaborative Team's agenda, so that they can pick up the remainder of the items. We will contact them this week. In the meantime, I want to give another huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers who participated on Saturday, and kudos to my assistant, Kristian, for capturing the pictures. I appreciate everyone's efforts and am grateful for community service oriented neighbors. They're simply the best!

FROM STATE SENATOR KAREN BERG:
As we look back on the recent 10-day veto recess, it's clear that Governor Beshear approached the task with the seriousness it deserved. Over ten days, he meticulously reviewed the legislative work completed during the initial 58 days of the session. During this time, he exercised his constitutional prerogatives—choosing to veto, sign, or passively allow bills to become law. This procedural phase of reflection represents a cornerstone of the checks and balances that safeguard our democracy.
As these vetoed bills return to the legislature for the final two days of the session today, Friday, April 12, and again on Monday, April 15, we are presented with a clear snapshot of where the Governor and supermajority's visions align and diverge. Here are the pieces of legislation that Governor Beshear felt compelled to veto or alter through line-item veto, setting the stage for a critical examination and potential override discussions in the coming days.

Main Remade Project - Feedback due 4/16
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently held a public meeting to update residents on planned improvements for phase one of the Main Remade project in Jefferson County. The project is designed to improve safety and accessibility along one of downtown Louisville’s key business, residential, and tourism corridors – Main Street.
Phase one of the project will convert Main Street from the current one-way street into a two-way street between Wenzel Street and 2nd Street. In addition to the one-way to two-way configuration, other improvements to the corridor include upgrades to crosswalks and intersections, a protected bike lane, dedicated left-turn lanes, and new traffic signals. Improvements will occur in three phases with construction on phase one expected to begin as soon as late 2024. Throughout construction, Main Street will remain open to traffic.
KYTC is currently seeking public comments on this project.

Vision Zero Annual Report
Louisville Metro Public Works recently released the Vision Zero Louisville 2023 Annual Report. The annual report is a requirement of Louisville's Vision Zero ordinance adopted two years ago, which establishes a vision of zero roadway deaths by 2050.
Preliminary figures show that 110 people died on non-interstate roadways in Jefferson County in 2023, including 31 pedestrians. To realize Louisville’s vision of zero roadway deaths by 2050, the city’s transportation safety initiative adheres to the USDOT-recommended Safe System Approach, which prioritizes the prevention of fatal and serious injury crashes through overlapping safety measures.

On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.
Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)
The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.
On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
