Leaders Celebrate Upgrades Underway to Bring High Speed Internet to Thousands in Rural Parts of Jefferson County

Effort to address this critical need was part of a decade of work by Councilman Stuart Benson

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 1, 2024

Louisville, KY: High speed internet access was expanded to nearly 2,000 households in Eastern and Southeastern Jefferson County after more than decade of work. Funding and leadership allocated by Stuart Benson of District 20 Metro Council, with support additional grants from the Federal Government, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the involvement Spectrum made the access possible. An event today celebrated the deployment.

The project was spearheaded by Councilman Stuart Benson (District 20) and included the involvement of Louisville Metro Mayor Craig Greenberg, Spectrum Associate Vice President Ellen Call, Metro Councilman Kevin Kramer (District 11) and Councilman Anthony Piagentini (District 19), Chris Seidt of Louisville Metro Technology and John LaFollette (LG&E).

“Reliable high-speed broadband is a necessity for business, education, and civic life.  After a decade of work, broadband is now available to the southeastern Jefferson County residents who reside in unserved households. This is undoubtably one of the most important projects undertaken since the start of merged government.   We are excited to announce that the entire county will soon have access to broadband they need to conduct business, educate themselves and make this community a stronger Metro Louisville.  I am proud to have been part of this effort with a team of leaders from both the public and private sectors.” – Stuart Benson, Louisville Metro Councilman, District 20

“Access to high-speed internet is no longer a luxury. Having the ability to work or even study from home has become essential. Assisting more rural areas like those in eastern and southeastern Jefferson County was something Councilman Benson was focused on years prior to COVID. We thank Spectrum as well as others who have joined Councilman Benson in this effort, and we look forward to seeing service extended to so many within our community.”  - Councilman Kevin Kramer, District 11

During the event, attendees had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Spectrum, LG&E and Metro Government to learn about the expansion process to areas of Jefferson County currently lacking highspeed internet. This included the installation process, the equipment being used for installation and maps showing current and future stages of the project.

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky and the City of Louisville have shown tremendous leadership in embracing public-private partnerships as a vital strategy for connecting unserved and underserved communities. Through these grants, Spectrum joins with state and local offices to bring gigabit broadband to nearly 2000 families and small businesses - this commitment will make a meaningful difference in Louisville.” – Ellen Call, Associate Vice President for Government Affairs, Charter Communications

The way people work and where people live have evolved tremendously over the past decade. As we see more people living in the East End and working from home, access to broadband internet is increasingly a matter of critical public infrastructure. It is Councilman Stuart Benson’s leadership who has made this day possible, and I am honored to have supported it.” – Councilman Anthony Piagentini, District 19

If you would like to see if your home will have high speed internet availability through this project, visit https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=11Xo_XQvkAZiqcF1YB6C8YDxVVXr5QHk&ll=38.14636853117925%2C-85.47414049999999&z=18

Second Round of Public Meetings Planned for I-64 Interchange Planning Study in Jefferson and Shelby Counties

jy

Transportation Cabinet to host public meetings April 16 and 17

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 28, 2024) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will hold a second round of public meetings in April regarding the Interstate 64 Interchange + Connector Planning Study. The study began in summer 2023 to examine access and congestion issues east of Interstate 265 with a goal of exploring options to reduce congestion on the existing roadway network and to improve I-64 connectivity.

This study considers the need for a new interchange on Interstate 64 (I-64) in eastern Jefferson or western Shelby County. The potential interchange would be between I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) and KY 1848 (Buck Creek Road) in Shelby County.

In addition to considering a new I-64 interchange, this study is evaluating potential routes connecting U.S. 60 to the north (near Eastwood) to KY 155/KY 148 to the south (near Fisherville).

Following public input from the first set of public meetings and an online survey in fall 2023, the project team developed three potential build concepts. Engineers evaluated a range of solutions by examining benefits, costs, and impacts. A project-specific traffic model was also developed for the region, considering expected growth and changing land uses through 2045.

These roadway concepts will be presented at two upcoming public meetings. KYTC representatives and engineering design consultants will attend to answer questions from residents and roadway users. Handouts containing information about the project and comment sheets will be available at the meetings:

  • Tuesday, April 16, 6-8 p.m. Echo Trail Middle School (Gymnasium, use entrance on left side of school) 2601 Echo Trail, Louisville, KY 40245
  • Wednesday, April 17, 6-8 p.m. Christian Academy of Louisville (Cafeteria, use entrances 6,7, 8 at rear of school) 700 S. English Station Road, Louisville, KY 40245

The meeting format will be informal. Attendees may stop by any time between 6 and 8 p.m. A brief presentation will be given at 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. each night. A recording of the presentation will also be shown continuously throughout the meeting for anyone unable to attend during those times.

Information about this planning study, including public meeting materials and a survey, can be found online at http://connect64.com. Feedback will be accepted through May 1.

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), anyone with a disability requiring assistance is asked to contact Morgan Woodrum at KYTC, no later than Friday, April 12. Please call 502-764-0481 or mail your request to 8310 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40242. Additionally, in compliance with Title VI, translation services are also offered.

DISTRICT 20 INTERACTIVE ZONING MAP!

We have a lot of new subscribers so I just wanted to remind everyone of the DISTRICT 20 INTERACTIVE ZONING MAP!

Over the years many of you have requested an easier way to access zoning information in District 20 so we have come up with an interactive map that will allow you to click on the icons or search for proposed zoning plans around your address to see what is going on around you. Each icon over an address contains the project name, case number, address and applicant information with a direct link to Accela where you can download plans, applications or just read more about the case.

This interactive zoning map contains 5 years of cases dating back to 10/1/2018. Some of the cases have been approved, denied or are currently ongoing but I felt that it was important to share this tool with the residents of District 20. As always, if you have questions or you are interested in learning about a case that is older please don't hesitate to reach out to me at 502-574-1120 or stuart.benson@louisvilleky.gov.

BBB Issues Warning in Aftermath of Severe Weather

April 2, 2024 – BBB serving Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana warns of storm-chasing scammers as severe storms hit many parts of Kentucky and Indiana.

With any destructive and severe weather, there is an increased potential of out-of-town storm chasers looking to take advantage of victims as they begin the process of cleaning up and repairing property damage. BBB warns residents affected by the storms to beware of these scammers.

BBB offers the following tips for storm victims:

  •  Know your rights and responsibilities as provided by the state Attorney General. Kentucky residents can contact the Kentucky Attorney General’s office at ag.ky.gov or call 502.696.5300.
  •  Businesses must be licensed. Contact the Revenue Commission at 502.574.4860 to check out a company’s licensure.
  • Many municipalities require a solicitation permit if salespeople go door-to-door.  Verify that they need to have a permit by contacting your local Township or Municipality or call Permits & Licensing at 502.574.3321
  • While most roofing contractors abide by the law, be careful allowing someone you do not know to inspect your roof. An unethical contractor may actually create damage to get work.
  •  Try to get at least 3-4 quotes from contractors, and insist that payments be made to the company, not an individual.
  •   Do not pay for the job in advance. Be wary of any contractor who demands full or half payment upfront.
  •   Resist high-pressure sales tactics, such as the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hire the contractor on the spot.
  • Get a written contract that specifies the price, the work to be done, the amount of liability insurance coverage maintained by the contractor, and a time frame. Require a copy of their current certificate of insurance.
  • For general questions or complaints related to insurance, contact your state’s Department of Insurance. Kentucky residents can visit insurance.ky.gov or call 502.564.3630.
  • Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem.
  •  If you suspect a company may be price gouging necessary goods or services due to the area storm damage, report the business to BBB and the Attorney General’s office.
  •  Beware of FEMA imposters. In the past, scammers have impersonated FEMA to try to scam consumers. Remember that FEMA does not charge for inspections, and they always wear ID badges. If you are still unsure, check with FEMA first at fema.gov or call 202.646.2500.

BBB is also warning area contractors to beware of storm chasers who are willing to pay local construction companies substantial amounts of money to use a local business’s established name, reputation, and phone so they can masquerade as a local business. Many contractors who agreed to let these storm chasers use their name regret their decision once they were left holding the bag of unsatisfied customers due to bad workmanship and/or unfulfilled warranties.

Finally, as many area homes may be without power, BBB advises consumers to be wary of any scam callers masquerading as gas and electric company employees. LG&E and KU will never call consumers and demand payment immediately over the phone in order to restore power (or prevent it from being shut off). For any concerns regarding utilities, contact your provider directly. Do not give your financial information over the phone to any unsolicited caller.
