Louisville Zoo mourns passing of beloved orangutan Teak

The Louisville Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved animals: 36-year-old orangutan, Teak. A well-known and popular Zoo resident, the male orangutan was humanely euthanized following a multi-year battle with heart disease. Teak was a Sumatran / Bornean hybrid orangutan that lived with a heart condition. His longevity is a testament to his resilience and the exceptional care he received. Teak had been receiving ongoing treatment for heart disease. However, in the past few months his cardiac function had further deteriorated, compounded by a chronic respiratory illness known as Orangutan Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ORDS). Teak participated in daily nebulizer treatments to manage his illness. Norton Healthcare Cardiologist Dr. Joe Lash collaborated closely with the Animal Care Team and with the Zoo’s veterinarians to oversee Teak’s heart care. Once diagnosed with heart disease, Teak was prescribed the same medications as those used in humans. Despite comprehensive care, monitoring and therapy, his heart disease progressed to cardiac failure over a 2.5-year period. “End of life decisions are always difficult, especially with a charismatic animal like Teak,” said Senior Staff Veterinarian Dr. Zoli Gyimesi, “but his welfare and quality of life was always our highest priority throughout his care.”

“We all mourn the loss of Teak to the Louisville Zoo and the community at large,” said Dr. Lash. “During these difficult times, I am always reminded and thankful for the skills and caring professionalism of the Zoo staff in supporting the complex medical care we at times need to employ to support the primate program.”

“Teak was undeniably a Louisville Zoo celebrity. His remarkable personality made him a wonderful ambassador for his species, inspiring visitors of all ages to care about wildlife. While our staff feels the loss of any animal resident, we recognize the passing of Teak resonates as profoundly with our wider community as well,” expressed Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “We are grateful for everyone who has visited and cared for Teak during his time in Louisville. He was a very special member of our Zoo family and will be greatly missed.”

Valuable information learned about Teak’s heart condition will be shared with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Great Ape Heart Project (GAHP). The GAHP is a team of zoo veterinarians, human and veterinary cardiologists, sonographers, and pathologists that compile critical cardiac data on all four great ape species. The GAHP team offers advice and support for zoos when experiencing such conditions with one of their apes.

Teak was born on November 21, 1987 at the Como Zoo in St. Paul Minnesota. He was known for his steady gaze and would often stand in the forefront of his habitat to engage with and observe the guests, and even seemed to take an interest in their footwear.

Teak and his half-sister, Amber, also a Sumatran Bornean hybrid orangutan, came to Louisville in 1996 from the Columbus Zoo. The two were also featured on the David Letterman show with Jack Hanna in 1988. 

If guests are looking for a way to honor Teak and his life, the Zoo encourages everyone to support products that use sustainable palm oil to protect orangutan habitats. Wild places for orangutans are being disrupted by rainforest destruction due to palm oil harvesting. The Louisville Zoo recommends the “PalmOil Scan” app developed by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for identifying sustainable options. The app can be found in the Apple or Google Play stores.

The Louisville Zoo also participates in The Orangutan SAFE program which aims to protect and restore the wild orangutan population and their habitats through public engagement, funding and field work.

Trees Louisville hosting Tree Adoption event at Churchill Downs this Saturday

Interested in free trees? Come to Churchill Downs Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon for a special event hosted by Trees Louisville. Trees contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, climate regulation, water conservation, and the well-being of individuals and communities.  This free event will offer five hundred one-gallon trees for adoption. Available species include Redbud, Persimmon, Eastern Red Cedar, Blush Magnolia, Swamp Chestnut, Oak, Pecan, and Sweet Birch. Each household is eligible for up to two trees, with certain species subject to quantity limits. The event will be held at Churchill Downs, 700 Central Avenue, in the Turquoise Lot. In collaboration with the tree adoption event, Churchill Downs has partnered with Trees Louisville to plant thirty-eight new trees along their property on Longfield and Wizard Avenues. The trees will create a buffer area between the stables and residential areas along Longfield. Churchill Downs will handle all aspects of the planting project, including maintenance. Louisville Zoo Hosts Party for the Planet: A Month-Long Celebration of Earth

New ‘Kids in Action’ program added to annual event

The Louisville Zoo announces the return of its annual celebration, Party for the Planet: A Month-Long Celebration of the Earth powered by LG&E and KU Foundation. Throughout April, the Zoo will host a series of weekend activities and discounted admission opportunities to celebrate the wonder of our planet and promote the need to protect it.  

New in 2024, the Zoo introduces the ‘Kids in Action’ program, inviting families and individuals of all ages to participate in environmentally beneficial projects in their own backyards. Participants can choose an activity aligned with conservation efforts and submit photos and explanations of their projects. Submissions will be accepted through April 16 with four winners selected on April 18 through a random drawing. Winners will receive a Zoo prize package and be invited to a special press conference celebrating Earth Month on April 21.  A video retrospective of all projects will be shared on April 22.

“We are proud to once again host this month-long celebration of earth’s remarkable ecosystems,” said Dan Maloney, director of the Louisville Zoo. “Wildlife needs everyone to thrive, and Party for the Planet provides the perfect opportunity for people to learn how they can help promote and protect wildlife and wild places. Big thanks to LG&E and KU Foundation for making the entire month of festivities possible.”

The celebration kicks off with Recycling Weekends on April 6, 13, and 20, featuring various conservation organizations offering tips and suggestions to protect the environment. Special activities, including animal presentations and keeper talks, will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each weekend.

In addition, the Zoo will offer unique compost sales with ZooPoopyDoo compost available for purchase on April 6, 13, 20, and 27. Fun Day Mondays on April 8, 15, 22, and 29 will feature $7.25 Zoo admission, powered by LG&E and KU Foundation, with a portion of proceeds supporting conservation projects worldwide.

Party for the Planet culminates with Earth Day observed on April 21, with $5 off general admission at the Zoo’s admissions windows and free parking all day, powered by LG&E and KU Foundation. Community eco-partners will be featured throughout the Zoo, providing guests with valuable information on environmental conservation.

The Louisville Audubon Society reminds you that peak Spring Bird Migration occurs in April and May. Please consider participating in LIGHTS OUT LOUISVILLE to make your home, neighborhood, and our city more bird-friendly. • most birds migrate at night (3.7 million birds flew over Jefferson County on Derby Night last year!)
• night lights confuse birds.
• hundreds of millions of birds die in the US every year because of building collisions, especially at night.

Together we can reduce those numbers. Forty-nine other U.S. cities already participate in the Audubon LIGHTS OUT program, including Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

Between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. residents can:

• Turn off unnecessary lights indoors. Shades, blinds and curtains can be used to prevent the glare from indoor lights shining through windows and confusing low-flying birds.
• Turn off unnecessary lights outdoors, which protects birds and reduces electric bills.
• Put necessary lighting on timers or use motion sensors, which not only protect birds but alert you if someone is in your yard after dark.
• Make sure external lighting is down-shielded so light shines where people need it, not upward into the night sky, which confuses birds.

Building managers can take the above steps and also turn off unnecessary lighting, especially near the tops of buildings, and dim or extinguish lobby or atrium lighting.

The lanterns are ready! Wild Lights are back at the Louisville Zoo.

The Louisville Zoo's popular lantern festival, Wild Lights, is back through May 19. 

Venture through the Zoo’s 1.4-mile path and experience hand-crafted, illuminated art displays. The event will feature more than 60 individual displays in themed areas depicting nature, coral reefs and Chinese mythology. Select area highlights include a blooming morning glory corridor, a 23-foot-tall octopus and a walk-through phoenix tunnel. Interactive lanterns invite guests to enhance the experience by powering lantern movements, competing in games and more. This 38-night immersive event features live cultural performances including Chinese folk dances, acrobatics and more. There will also be unique handcrafted goods available for purchase along with snacks and cocktails.

The event is wheelchair and stroller-friendly on a paved path. The festival is a rain or shine event and will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights through May 19. Wild Lights will also run every night during JCPS Spring Break, April 1 to 5. 

Tickets are available for purchase in advance online only, and children under three do not require a ticket. 

Camp Taylor Elementary School pantry needs food donations

Tiffany Bolling from the Family Resource Center has reached out to request food donations for the school pantry at Camp Taylor Elementary School:

Not only do we feed our students and their families at Camp Taylor and Audubon Traditional Elementary Schools, we also have a food pantry in front of the school to feed the community. Our shelves are bare, and I am worried about having enough food to feed our students and their families during Spring Break.

Our pantry is usually stocked through Dare to Care, but the food goes so quickly. Our homeless demographic has doubled from last school year. I am trying to keep up with the nutritional support I can provide, but it's a struggle.

Free lifeguard training offered to future Metro Parks employees continues through May

Louisville Parks and Recreation is now hiring lifeguards for the 2024 swim season. Certification classes continue through late May at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue. 

Each class costs $200 to take but is free if participants commit to working one year at a Louisville Parks and Recreation pool. Participants must be at least 15 years of age or older. The course will provide lifeguard, first aid and CPR/AED certifications.Participants must attend all classes to complete the course and receive certifications. The starting pay for the position of a Louisville Parks and Recreation lifeguard is $16.65/hour with a guarantee of 36-40 hours per week.

April 9 - first community meeting regarding 2024 Property Assessment process and right to appeal

The Jefferson County PVA will mail property assessments on April 26. The 2024 reassessment covers MLS Areas 2, 3, and 7 including areas in and around Germantown, The Highlands, Clifton, Crescent Hill, Butchertown, St. Matthews, Indian Hills, Audubon Park, Hikes Point, Jeffersontown, Fern Creek (areas east of Bardstown Road), and Fisherville. If your property value changes, you will receive a full-color assessment notice on a large postcard that includes a photo of the property and information about the assessment appeal process.

If you believe the assessed value is not correct, The Jefferson County PVA wants you to know: You have a right to appeal.

The mission of the PVA is to provide fair and equitable assessments for all property owners in Jefferson County. PVA staff works hard to get the value of our property correct. However, the PVA does not know every detail or condition of your property. If you believe the PVA assessed value does not represent the fair-market value of your property, you have a right to appeal your assessment.

April 8 - DOJ Civil Rights Division public meeting on LMPD reform

Please join the Department of Justice (DOJ) for a community meeting on Monday April 8, 2024, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Republic Bank Foundation YMCA, Community Meeting Room, 1720 West Broadway. Our team, who conducted the investigation into the Louisville Metro Police Department, will discuss what consent decrees have done for other cities’ police forces, what the decree can do for LMPD, and what opportunities there are for community involvement throughout the implementation and monitoring process here in Louisville. Please share this invitation with others who may be interested in attending. Spanish and ASL interpretation will be provided.

Throughout DOJ’s investigation, people of Louisville graciously shared their stories and their time with us. As a result, we found that LMPD and Louisville Metro Government have a pattern or practice of behavior that violates the Constitution and federal law.

Specifically, LMPD:

• Uses excessive force, including unjustified neck restraints and the unreasonable use of police dogs and tasers;
• Conducts searches based on invalid warrants;
• Unlawfully executes search warrants without knocking and announcing;
• Unlawfully stops, searches, detains, and arrests people during street enforcement activities, including traffic and pedestrian stops;
• Unlawfully discriminates against Black people in its enforcement activities;
• Violates the rights of people engaged in protected free speech critical of policing; and
• Along with Louisville Metro Government, discriminates against people with behavioral health disabilities when responding to them in crisis.

We also found deficiencies in LMPD’s response to and investigation of domestic violence and sexual assault, including its responses to allegations that LMPD officers engaged in sexual misconduct or domestic violence. Deficiencies in policies, training, supervision, and accountability contribute to LMPD and Louisville Metro’s unlawful conduct.

The city has signed an agreement in principle. This means it has committed to work with us to resolve the DOJ’s findings through a court-enforceable consent decree with an independent monitor. You can find the full findings report and the agreement in principle here. We are presently negotiating the terms of the decree. Throughout this process, we will be seeking input on reform from the various constituencies that make up Louisville Metro, including residents, community groups, city leaders, and local businesses, to inform the negotiations.

We are grateful for the discussions we have had, and we hope to continue that conversation now. This is not your only chance to speak with us. We’ll continue holding future events in different parts of the city and online in the coming months. Our next meeting will be held virtually on Tuesday, April 16. We will share more information about these next meetings in the coming weeks.

The Craig Buthod Author Series presents New York Times bestseller Craig Johnson

LFPL welcomes back Craig Johnson, bestselling author of the Walt Longmire mystery novel series, which is the basis for the hit Netflix original drama Longmire. Johnson comes to Louisville from his home in Ucross, Wyoming, population 26. The Longmire Defense, the 19th title in the series, finds Walt Longmire struggling with his family history in Bighorn Mountains when he uncovers a cold case that hits very close to home and forces him to put his life on the line.

Construction moratorium during Derby 150 festivities

From Public Works: A construction moratorium will be in place from Friday, April 12 through May 5 to facilitate the celebration of the 150th Kentucky Derby The following construction related activities will not be allowed in the public right-of-way: cuts, dumpsters, equipment, construction activities and/or materials, in the Central Business District+ (CBD+), arterials leading to Churchill Downs, and within a two-block perimeter around Churchill Downs. The CBD+ is defined as River Road to the north, York Street to the south, 10th Street to the west and Campbell Sreet to the east. All work must be completed with roadways and sidewalks open and cleared for pedestrians and traffic. Because Derby events will take place at various locations and times, other areas may be added to the list, and an order to clear any work in those areas will be issued as we receive them. Thank you for your cooperation.

Crisis Component of LIHEAP continues

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is now accepting appointments for the annual Crisis Component of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program assists income-eligible households in Jefferson County with home heating costs through March 31, or until funds are depleted. Metro Government offers free tax preparation services

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides trained, IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax services at 15 sites across the city. VITA is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2023.

Since its launch in 2001, the VITA program has helped more than 143,000 Louisville tax filers. Last year, VITA volunteers processed more than 7,700 returns, adding more than $12 million to the local economy, including nearly $2 million in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to residents.

Residents can also choose to have their taxes prepared at MyFreeTaxes.com, which provides a free self-file program offered in partnership by United Way Worldwide and TaxSlayer.

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. Appointments and walk-ins are accepted. The city has also set up a trauma hotline that is free to call: 901-0100.

LMPD - which numbers to call for emergencies, non-emergencies, and ongoing criminal activity complaints

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Is Louisville Water working in your area? Our website offers an easy way to find out. An interactive map shows not only construction locations but also details on the projects, including the status, type, and even the project manager's phone number. While the map shows all planned projects, please note that it currently does not display repairs on water main breaks.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

"Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Reporting potholes

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
