Message from Major Wampler
I am happy to say Spring is officially here. The warmer weather will be a welcomed change as many of us return to our outdoor activities. During this time, please remember to take steps to protect yourself and your property. Be cognizant of your surroundings reporting any suspicious activity you observe. As you visit our local parks ensure you lock your vehicles and do not leave any valuable items visible that may tempt a thief.
The recent 8th Division community outreach efforts have been well attended and successful. We had a child focused St. Patrick's Day Sweets & Sirens event at the Kroger on Westport Road with the Anchorage Middletown Fire Department. This event was fun for everyone who attended. We are planning to host additional events with our friends at Anchorage Middletown Fire to build on this success. Our 2nd Meet Your Beat Officer event was at the Northeast YMCA. There were several community partners who participated to include Kroger, Meijer, McDonalds, the Lyndon Police Department, the St. Matthews Fire Department, and several other LMPD units. The constant flow of residents who stopped by where able to ask questions and take advantage of the many give aways from our partners.
The next large event the 8th Division will be holding is our first Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday March 30, 2024, which we plan to make an annual event. Please consider attending this event and bringing any children you know. There will be several giveaways, activities, and opportunities to interact with your 8th Division officers.

February 2024
Officers of the Month
|
|
Officer Andy Waford and Officer Derrick Williams were selected as the February 8th Division Officers of the Month. Officer Waford and Officer Williams are beat partners on our late watch platoon. These officers work very well together and consistently do great work while serving the citizens of Louisville Metro. They are being recognized for two notable incidents during February.
The first incident was a response to a suicidal subject who stated he was armed with a gun and was telling officers to shoot him. Officer Waford and Officer Williams took control of the response by ensuring the safety of the subject, bystanders, and other responding officers. They maintained contact with the subject while attempting to deescalate the situation and developed a plan to safely end the potentially dangerous incident. The officers safely gained control of the situation and subject. The subject was safely transported to a health care facility to receive needed treatment. Their calm and collected approach to the situation ensured no one was injured and the subject, who was having a mental health crisis, received the care he needed.
The second incident occurred when they responded to a home burglary to take a report. Both officers collected information and evidence for the detective unit but did not stop there. The officers felt the suspects were likely to return to the location, so they watched the house from a nearby location. Their hunch paid off when they observed a suspicious person driving in the area. They conducted a traffic stop on the suspicious individual resulting in an identification and useful investigative information for the detective unit.
Officer Waford and Officer Williams experience and dedication to the community they serve undoubtedly make the area they patrol safer. Please help me congratulate these officers for being chosen as the February 8th Division Officers of the Month when you see them out on patrol.

We need your help to prevent these types of crimes. Over half of the theft from vehicle incidents were from unlocked vehicles. Reduce your chances of being a victim by locking your vehicles. Do not leave bags or valuable items visible to thieves who may be looking into your vehicle in search of something to steal.
