Special Update
March 19th, 2024
The following is the statement I gave at my press conference this morning regarding the dismissal of all charges in the recent removal proceedings. It is an honor to continue representing you.
Good Morning.
I want to begin with expressing my sincerest thanks to the overwhelmingly bipartisan group of Councilmembers who voted with me last night to dismiss all charges. Clearly there are many of my colleagues who, after examining the evidence, agree with me that these charges were not based in fact and evidence.
We have seen a disturbing trend nationally that this Council pushed back against. We should stop criminalizing political disagreements. To be clear, I haven’t received so much as a moving violation in the past 20 years. To think that I could go from that record to what I was accused of in this case is absurd. Anyone and everyone who know me knows that these charges have been ridiculous from the beginning.
At this point, I don’t want to dwell too much on what has happened in the past other than to say this proceeding was driven by a handful of members and, even given the final decision, it suffered from a real deficit of fundamental fairness and proper due process. I would not wish this on my worst enemy.
But despite my fundamental concerns over the process, in the end I am incredibly thankful for the bipartisan members of the Council who examined the evidence with an open mind and rejected the charges against me. There is nobody else in America who is more ready than I to move on from this and, with that end in mind, I want to reflect on a couple points.
First, I want to apologize to my colleagues and the citizens of District 19 for one aspect of my behavior that I do not look back on with satisfaction. As I stated during the Ethics Commission hearing, if I could go back in time and communicate this in a way that would have avoided any misunderstanding on what happened, I would do that in a heartbeat. Whenever possible, I have always tried to give others the benefit of the doubt. Because of that, I did not appreciate how things can get misconstrued. I have already apologized privately to President Winkler who out of respect I should have called about this when it happened. I would like to apologize to him publicly and to the rest of the Council for not doing that. I can promise that I will be far more cognizant of perceptions going forward.
