 SWCM Giving Back Gala:
Celebrating 40 Years of Community Engagement
Join us on April 13, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the Angel’s Envy Bourbon Club inside the L & N Stadium for an evening of celebration and giving back. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Southwest Community Ministries (SWCM) engagement with the community, and we are commemorating this milestone with our annual Giving Back Gala.
The goal of this event is to raise funds for our ministry, which provides a range of services to our community, including a food pantry, financial assistance, meal delivery to seniors, seasonal children’s programs, and new parent support. This annual event is a crucial part of our efforts to provide assistance to our neighbors in crisis.
The night promises to be filled with fun and camaraderie, featuring dinner, dancing, raffles, and a silent auction. It’s more than just a gala; it’s a community coming together to support each other and make a difference.
We are currently seeking sponsorships and donations for the event. Your contribution will go a long way in helping us continue our mission of serving the community.
For more information about the event or how to contribute, please visit our website at southwestcommunityministries.org or contact Charlotte at charlotte@supportswcm.org.
We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating 40 years of community engagement together!
Community Cleanup Event at Southwest Regional Library
For our second clean-up of the year, on Saturday March 2, 2024, a group of concerned citizens gathered at the Southwest Regional Library to clean up the litter on the campus and surrounding area.
It’s inspiring to see members of our community come together to make a positive impact. The event was a great opportunity for the community to come together and work towards making our neighborhood cleaner and greener. The volunteers collected EIGHT bags of trash.
We hope that this event will inspire others to take similar initiatives and work towards making our neighborhood a better place to live.
If you would like to volunteer your time, for our next event, we are meeting at the Dollar General at 8715 3rd Street Road to pick up litter on 3rd Street Road.
Celebrating Lancaster Gordon: A Legend On and Off the Court
On Thursday, February 29th, we had the distinct honor of celebrating Lancaster Gordon at our Black History Month Awards Presentation.
Mr. Gordon, a retired professional basketball player, is not just a two-time All-Metro Conference selection, but a legend whose contributions to the University of Louisville are etched in the annals of its history.
However, his impact extends far beyond the basketball court. Today, he continues to inspire and make a difference as a Youth Service Center Coordinator at Doss High School in Jefferson County.
In this role, Mr. Gordon has been instrumental in shaping the lives of countless young individuals, guiding them towards a brighter future. His dedication to our community and his unwavering commitment to youth development are truly commendable.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Gordon for his inspiring journey and his tireless dedication to our community. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, commitment, and service.
Thank you, Mr. Gordon, for being a beacon of inspiration for us all.
 Stonestreet Elementary Celebrates GREAT Graduation
Stonestreet Elementary was buzzing with excitement on February 28th as students, teachers, and community members gathered for a special event. The school was proud to host the graduation ceremony for the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program, a key initiative that empowers our youth to resist gang involvement and make positive life choices.
The atmosphere was electric as the graduates, dressed in their ceremonial attire, walked across the stage to receive their certificates. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, not just among the graduates, but also among the parents, teachers, and community members who have supported them throughout their journey.
The GREAT program plays a crucial role in our community, providing young people with the skills and knowledge they need to resist the lure of gang involvement. By focusing on character building, decision-making, and other essential life skills, the program helps students make positive choices for their futures.
We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the graduates on completing this important milestone. Your hard work and dedication have paid off, and we are incredibly proud of what you have achieved.
We would also like to express our gratitude to Tony Sacra from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), who has been instrumental in leading this effort. His dedication and commitment to the program have made a significant impact on our community.
