Message from Major Wampler
We are starting to see some signs of early spring sprinkled into the winter weather which has been a nice break from the cold temperatures. With these warm evenings we recently saw an increase in car thefts and theft from autos. Most of these incidents involved vehicles which were left unlocked. There were groups of suspects driving through residential areas checking door handles for unlocked vehicles. They would steal any valuables they found in unlocked vehicles and the vehicle if keys were left inside it. Please make a habit of not leaving valuables or keys in your vehicles and locking your doors even if you are parked in your garage. Taking these steps will greatly reduce the chances of your property being taken by a thief. Our officers and detectives have been working to identify those responsible and have made some arrests. Even though we make an arrest there are still other thieves who will take their place so we all need to remain vigilant.
The division has also been busy with several community events over the past month. These events have been a huge success. We are looking forward to meeting more of our community members at the upcoming events we will be hosting. This coming Thursday evening we are having a Meet Your Beat Officer event at the Northeast YMCA. Please consider joining us for this event to meet officers from the 8th Division and several of our community partners who will be joining us. We also have a St. Patrick’s Day cookie decorating event coming up and will be having our first Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Tom Sawyer State Park soon. There are fliers with details about these events in the Community Events section below.

January 2024
Officer of the Month
Officer Wesley Leffler
Officer Wesley Leffler is the 8th Division January 2024 Officer of the Month. Officer Leffler received this award due to his diligent patrol work he has been performing on his beat. An example of the work he is doing involves the many retail stores on his beat near Oxmoor Mall. Officer Leffler has been working with the businesses to address organized retail theft issues they are experiencing. Recently while he was patrolling the businesses, he observed suspects running out of a store after they allegedly committed a theft. Officer Leffler quickly responded by apprehending and arresting the suspects. Due to his quick actions the property taken was returned to the business and the suspects will be held accountable in court. Officer Leffler transferred last year to the 8th Division and has been a great addition to our team. He has a great attitude and a high level of experience he leverages to serve and protect our community. Please help me congratulate Officer Leffler as you see him patrolling the division for his dedication to the residents of Louisville Metro and being named the 8th Division January 2024 Officer of the Month.

1 - Robbery Incident
- The robbery incident involved a suspect who allegedly approached a victim sitting in a vehicle near Chamberlain Lane and Maple Brook Drive. The victim stated the suspect asked a question leading the victim to give the suspect cash. The suspect then cut the victim causing minor injuries. This incident is still under investigation. Currently we do not anticipate a danger to the public from this suspect. It appears the victim and suspect may have been meeting at the location and this was not a random act of violence.
